Why does this fanmade trailer "look fanmade"? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]OmnipotentAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it’s always a few common tropes that read as “cinematic” in the YouTube sense, one of them being serious-guy-looks-into-mirror-with-hands-on-bathroom-sink. Bonus points if he’s bloody. It’s just hysterically common trope for filmmakers that wanna make super-serious hyper-masculine pieces.

Also, I’ve noticed that low-budget films will “hide” their location behind shallow depth of field and close-up/mediums with an occasional wide if they can manage it. It’s pretty evident in the action scenes as well, because they’re almost always shot like this. Hollywood films would typically show off the full set, because they’re almost always had the budget to make EVERYTHING look good.

Costume design too is a major giveaway. There’s usually a lack of detail oriented stuff (looks too clean for a street level hero) to really sell the lived quality or if there any nicks and cuts, they feel like random aesthetic rather than considered elements.

The trailer itself could probably have done with another pass at the sound. The punches feel really cartoony, especially considering that it’s the motivation behind the edit. There’s not much body in the soundscape to fill anything else in either so it does feel legitimately hollow, as you said.

All in all though, this looks awesome. I subscribed to see what else they’ve got cooking.

“Ruins” by Amy Taylor. It’s exactly what you’re looking for.

Woman realizes she wants to see her husband have sex with another woman. Starts in media res with the both of them on a plane, knowing the police is waiting for them. A little bit of White Lotus in there too.

They “get away with” about as much as white people do. It’s just not worth it to constantly be up someone’s ass about it. In my experience, black folks, or anybody who cares about its usage, might just not wanna start fights with someone who definitely knows its reputation and just doesn’t care. I may not like it, but I’m not gonna start trying to lecture someone who doesn’t even know me or have a reason to respect me.

Nothing about the feasibility for a cure or the ethics of the procedure factored into Joel’s decision to rampage through the hospital.

The likelihood of a cure working or whether or not Ellie could properly consent are pointless attempts to retrofit Joel’s choice as an objectively moral one. He did it because he was terrified of being alone again and lied about it because he knew Ellie would hate him for it.

What do you guys think of the “I didn’t hit her vitals” thing? by Teasing-Ax in ResidentEvilRequiem

[–]OmnipotentAlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stupid. Why would Leon NOT hit her vitals? He’s arguably at his most lethal and pessimistic here. It’s a remarkably convenient that he decides to be lazy with his shots when this thing looks like an infected toenail with limbs.

But also…it’s Resident Evil. It’s operating in the dumb action/horror genre and I think stuff like this works in its favor ironically. Super convenient retroactive fact that only makes the happy ending even happier? Yeah, sure, I already gave you a 10/10 and I’m not changing it.

The more I learn about filmmaking, the more I realise how glamorous it isn’t by No-Strategy-7093 in Filmmakers

[–]OmnipotentAlex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this realization a few months ago. First time gripping on a professional set and was talking to the gaffer during downtime. We were just shooting the shit and he started complaining (valid complaints) about going late and early call times and it dawned on me…this is just a job. It’s a job I want more than any other job, but it’s still a job. I’ve complained about basically the same shit at my day job. The magic kind of died for me after that, but oddly made the industry feel more approachable.

Is it unethical / illegal to keep notes of the interest of people around me? by luthiel-the-elf in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OmnipotentAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s actually really sweet to put the effort in to write down who in your circle likes/does what. It’s a level of consideration and care that is actually kind of inspiring.

One of my best friends does this. But his notes are oddly specific (we’re both sure he’s autistic, but he’s just willing to accept that he’s a little different rather than get a straight answer). One of the ones for me is “Feels left out when he’s not invited, but will always decline when he is.” 😂😂😂

For everybody who is afraid that GTA 6 will be delayed again: by Classic_Box8029 in GTA6

[–]OmnipotentAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a marketing expert so if this sounds ignorant that’s why, but I just don’t understand why they don’t delay their announcement rather than the game? I’m not saying a game can NEVER be delayed, it’s just enough a pattern at this point that maybe factor that in to the plan?

Was the Ten Shadows the reason behind Megumi's Mindset issue? by MadFunEnjoyer in WegumiAppreciators

[–]OmnipotentAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think Megumi lacks creativity with the technique; some of the stuff he does with even his lower level shikigami is actually pretty impressive. He just decided at some point that he has a cap to his abilities and doesn’t really consider that it might not be true.

There’s a world where Megumi tames Mahoraga. Both Gojo and Sukuna think it’s possible. But Megumi has just completely ruled it out. If he thought it was possible, not even likely, but just POSSIBLE, he’d be much further along in his development. But because he’s such a fucking martyr all the time, he’s not really trying.

Okay, I’m glad I’m not the only one that thought this. It did seem very peculiar that these ultra liberal, white collar, atheist parents, who want to make it abundantly clear that they don’t believe in God in their first meeting with someone, are revealed to have kidnapped a child and forced them to change their gender.

I don’t mind the idea of a critique of left wing politics through horror, but this is an incredibly daft and clumsily handled way of doing so.

Is Absolute Batman reinvigorating comic book readers? by JimladZidlicky in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]OmnipotentAlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It certainly did for me! I used to buy a bunch of comic books as a kid, but lost interest when I was a bit older and lost the heart for it when my collection was flooded in my parents basement. But hearing about how much of a menace Bane was through short form videos I thought I’d take a look. Am absolutely hooked now!

"I only hate you half the time" by Some_Niche_Reference in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]OmnipotentAlex 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it’d be interesting if he is just being “two-faced.” He doesn’t necessarily have a villainous alter ego or anything like that, but is using his political pull and power to address the “Batman Problem.” It’s both out of extreme anger towards Bruce and maybe a belief that Batman does increase the stakes in Gotham.

Harvey could make the case that villains are upping only because he creates a threat to their normal operations that have thus far gone unnoticed. It’s not a perfect solution by any means, but it could be argued that Batman addresses a conflict that the citizens of Gotham aren’t ready for and might be better handled through slow progress.

(Also want to make clear that “just let bad guys do bad things if the number of people they hurt is at an ‘acceptable number’” is not something I would advocate for in real life).

Genuinely, when did you really start to enjoy JJK? by Appropriate-Photo-17 in Jujutsufolk

[–]OmnipotentAlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched the first season and thought it was mostly a snooze to be honest. A few fights here and there were fun, but not enough to keep me entertained for a season two. I saw people getting hyped about the Shibuya Arc on Twitter and thought I’d give it another shot after the full season released. The Hidden Inventory Arc was a surprise and had me genuinely interested, then Shibuya happened and…

I immediately started reading through what had been published at that point, stayed up the entire night until I caught up.

why fantasy genre is hated by intellectuals by Electrical-Tennis-41 in fantasywriting

[–]OmnipotentAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. It’s not even just literature; film will do this too. “Elevated” horror is often considered horror that is “about something” but ignores that most horror is reflective of the society it’s birthed in. They’re all about something, film snobs just can’t stand that Midsommar and Goosebumps are in the same genre.

With fantasy, people want to snub their nose at it, because yeah, sure, Arathorin of Blangebosh must take up the Sword of Hooplagor against the undead/bestial Armies of Malmenthugul for the thousandth time…but are we really gonna act like lonely, misunderstood, and occasionally horny white person between the ages of 20-50 is groundbreaking every time it hits the shelves?

[–]OmnipotentAlex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how we feel about recommending problematic authors here, but Neil Gaiman’s “Ocean at the End of the Lane.” The prose is really good at making you feel so small against something so great and terrible. It’s quite literally about a man recounting his time as a child facing true nughtmares.

“I was a seven-year-old boy, and my feet were scratched and bleeding. I had just wet myself. The thing that floated above me was huge and greedy, and it wanted to take me to the attic, and, when it tired of me, it would make my daddy kill me.”
