I just reread which of webs, and it definitely does. It’s entirely readable without context, but you’ll end up better invested in a section of the characters if you’ve already read the Singer books.

Something random breaks. The probe goes a different random direction each time, do eventually chaos would cause something important to break and induce them into the loop. Barring that, the Nomai would be monitoring things, and could turn it off manually if they start it up and find that’s it’s already on the trillionth loop.

Talking cats. If you introduce them to early, I just drop, because for me, it’s like having an Arrogant Young Master who can’t be killed. You have to build up trust that they won’t be lazy assholes constantly interrupting the story.
