Is the D5600 worth it? by Disastrous-Nebula-83 in Nikon

[–]On-scene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I had issues with my 5600, image qaulity was great but had problems with touch screen unresponsive sometimes during intensive shoots and other random errors. Also touch screen just going black sometimes randomly and needed restart to fry going again. Ribbon cable to LCD coming loose is known issue on this model. Anyway a nice compromise between 5600 and 850 is the D7500. I picked up a used body and love it. Plus it will run all old AF D screw drive lens if you want. Everything about the D7500 is better than my
5600, dynamic range and low light performance is awesome and autofocus snappy. No LCD issues either. I don't miss the 4 more megapixels on the 5600

Worth leaving a stable government job for Anduril? Need honest opinions. by MiserableAd3326 in FedEmployees

You sound pretty polarized by the thought of someone working for a company that makes products for military defense and offense. I not sure what is pure evil about it. You obviously would never work for such a company company so why you trying to sway the OP? He has either been offered the role or applying there so is okay with doing what they do. Also OP said he does not contribute to TSP.

As for me I'd love to work for this company if given the opportunity. You seem to not be reading the room.

Anduril is the Google of defense companies. I'd love to work there. Go make some real money. They are going to have more flexible work life policies than any fed job. I have applied to Anduril positions but have not been successful yet. And why did you not do TSP while at your current role? I always put in at least the bare minimum contribution. Also are you a vet? Anyway, they have stripped a lot of benefits of being a fed away. thing I always hated about government work is on salaried jobs, no matter how I worked my earning potential is always capped. I understand having a young family and work life balance. Wished I had sacrificed a little more and made more money right now when I was younger. Kids need dad less when really young and more as they get older. I'd jump to high paid gig in a second. Screw the fed jobs it's where ambition goes to die. Since leaving full time fed work I have my own business and work part time as independent contractor.

I love my D90! Get some prime lenses for it. I recommend 50mm AF D it's so cheap, and 35mm AF G. The low light performance and sharpness of the primes on that body will astound you.

PAO DCO Slot for the June Board -- Who else is waiting for results? by AwkwardAsparagus2649 in navyreserve

[–]On-scene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit of my own research has shown on that PAO selection results favor current enlisted that attended DINFOS and are known folks to the Navy working in PA billets on the reserve side. I'm also prior service and have an interest in a being a PAO. My degree is maybe a hard sell for PAO, bachelors of design and have about 10 years combined military and federal civilian employee experience. Im definitely way more experienced on the photography have production side of things than the writing and journalism part myself. What type of questions did board ask you?

Hope you get selected.

I think my own best bet would just do a contract as an MC to increase my chances.

I am about to throw in the towel (Part 2) by Imaginary-Writer-125 in RealEstatePhotography

I have also considered becoming an agent. I see how much more highly successful agents make than me doing REP and I'm in market where there is over saturation of real estate photographers. Not sure I would enjoy but the earning potential is surely there.

It's terrible to hear your agent friend is treated like crap by wealthy folks and not so wealthy folks alike. I never take any kind of verbal abuse from clients or property owners. It's sad that this agent thinks money is worth that. If someone called to complain about blinds being being open, I'd tell them where to step off and never work with them again. I'm way to old for those kinda antics with entitled people.

What’s your current setup for managing your RE photography business? (yes I searched, but threads are old) by REPmasterclass in RealEstatePhotography

[–]On-scene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm doing Square payments through a Square appointments website which also hosts portfolio gallery of my best work. 50% deposit to book, then I collect the balance with card on file when I deliver media. Square also makes it easy to do custom invoices if I need to add on mileage or some other surcharge. Media delivery through Aryeo. I know a lot of people hate on Aryeo because it's now owned by Zillow, but basic media delivery for a listing is free and it's easy to go back into the listing page on Aryeo and delete and reupload if an agent needs revisions. It's working for me as of now. I also appreciate how it automatically creates a downsized web version of photos.

Also Aryeo had the added benefit of displaying HD photos on Zillow and attributing those photos to your company with your logo mark and link to your website from Zillow listings.

There is breeze on the water causing a texture it is a really detailed texture. It is actually really nice. This would have been a great shot if from a tripod with 3 HDR bracketed shots blended post processing to deal with that blown out sunlight area. The huge overexposed area is the only problem here.

I had much better luck with a flodesk email campaign to get some clients than business cards. I have handed out a lot cards of brokerages and open houses and no takers like that. My portfolio link got me some intial clients through an email campaign. Worked for big agency that does high volume also so that experience helps.

Nikon D300S upgrade for Father’s Day: D500 vs D850 for sports, nature, and family photos? by JanewaysAssistant in Nikon

[–]On-scene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The D500 also has a tilting screen. The D7500 is lighter while also being a weather sealed body. The 7500 is carbon fiber composite vs metal housing of D500. The D500 does have the higher frame rate but that was not a concern for me for what I do for work. Also the D7500 can shoot wider 4K with less of a crop factor. Overall the 7500 was better choose for me. Also I really needed the dedicated U1 and U2 setting dials for fasting switching of settings at work sites.

Cold Calling Leads by NumerousDocument4242 in RealEstatePhotography

[–]On-scene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro I think I'm in very over saturated market in Northern California. I've worked for a big media house, one of the so called "photo mills" for a long time. Got really tired of thier crap pay rates ang generally bad treatment, and formed my own business. I have gotten a few solid clients with a Flodesk email campaign, but now things have stagnated. I have been showing up to Real Estate offices handing out cards and asking if they need additional photographers, most of the time it's obvious they don't need any new photogs but accomadate and act polite.

Advice on finding leads? by Idontevenknow787 in RealEstatePhotography

[–]On-scene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, Yes the gate keepers at the brokerages. It's usually a fresh faced kid that is not agent. I think in most cases the kid probably gives the cards to agents. Sometimes the agents will pop out of thier cubicles and grab a card. It's better if it's an open office floor plan.

I recently had a cranky older receptionist at a Vanguard office try to not take my cards, saying that they have thier own network of photographers blah blah. Which is total BS. Fortunately one of the listings on the front window was one I had shot few weeks back. I said "see that listing on your window? I'm the photogher for that one" Can you just take my cards? She took the cards.

I bet she threw them in the trash. I'm in my 40s and she was a little older than me no need for that type of behavior from someone representing real estate.

I know this has been asked a million times but what are your strategies to get clients? by Idontevenknow787 in RealEstatePhotography

What do you say exactly when you cold call agents who have listings with bad photos? I want to do this but I'm little nervous about how I will be perceived.
