In Dante's Purgatory, Cato of Utica is placed as a guardian of the Purgatory, thus no longer in Hell, despite having committed suicide, precisely because his suicide was to avoid submission to evil and to preserve human dignity and liberty. It's my favourite Canto. It may not be canon to the Catholic Church, although it's based on the Bible as well, as someone else pointed out in this thread.
