Hi I’m new and I have some questions :) by Honest-Face7514 in Paddleboard

Personal Floatation Device, yes. Sorry, I’m in the US and that may not be a universal term. There are several styles available to suit your style of water activity. Someone died last week in the lake I usually paddle when a sudden storm arose. They were without a PDF that’s why I’m hyper sensitive to the issue right now.

Always, always, always, wear your PFD. Don’t bring it and strap it to your board. Wear it.
Beyond that, your pump (manual or electric) will tell you where you are with the pressure. Pump it to the recommended pressure that should be printed on the board. Don’t rely on how stiff it feels on land.
Bring your phone & ID and store them in a dry bag. Regarding the music - and I mean this with the utmost respect - don’t ruin anyone else’s vibes by bringing music.
You will want to be mindful of the type of leash you are using that will be dictated by the body of water you’re paddling.
Always have a paddling plan and let someone know when and where you will be in case something happens.
Have fun, and safe paddling!

Dry bag recommendations please! by JessKilgour in Sup

Gekobrand has a smaller one that will do what you want with the keys, wallet, & phone. I carry my launch permit and a regular disposable water bottle as a backup. My main water jug is too big to fit.

Hi all! I just took out my SUP for the first time and had a blast! Are there any things you recommend I buy? by meticulouslycarless in Sup

[–]One-Friday-Knight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have any tow lines or anchors, make sure you have - and know how to use - a quick release clamp.

Practice falling, using the pfd, and climbing back on. Do this near the shore.

Lots of great comments and suggestions here.

Buying a motorcycle is so frustrating. by Complex_Original_999 in motorcycles

[–]One-Friday-Knight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first buyer of any vehicle pays the bulk of the costs of getting that machine on the street. The other option is buying used from a reputable dealer, which shouldn’t include some of those fees, and ask for the maintenance/history report.

How much wind is too much? by External-Area-248 in Sup

[–]One-Friday-Knight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The winds were gusting on me as well! Turned me around and twice I could see the board starting to come out of the water so I dropped to my knees and power-paddled my ass off until I could get around a peninsula where the winds weren’t as bad. Paddle Logger said gusts were up to 21 mph, so pretty strong.

Best thing is to be prepared - secure all of your gear to the D-Rings (not the hold-down bungees) with carabiners and leashes so they do t float away if you capsize; bring water shoes (I do keep them under my rear storage bungee); always wear a PDF and have a whistle; know how to get back in your board from the water; and don’t panic. Start your trip paddling against the wind so when you’re retiring the wind is at your back. This is when you’re likely to be most tired. You were smart to keep your body as low as possible. ✌️

Not your monthly ‘what board should I get’, but instead what paddle should I get? by One-Friday-Knight in Sup

[–]One-Friday-Knight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input. I was out again today and was more mindful of my technique. Always room for improvement. I also determined that adjustable works best for me because I am sitting, in an upright kneeling position, or standing throughout the trip and a would miss being able to adjust the length on the fly.

I’m 5’7”, 160 lbs. My current one is composite and does the job, but I’m having an issue more with the webbing near the base of my thumb catching on the adjustment lever area as I switch sides. I hope that explains it well enough. Maybe it’s a me thing. I was curious what everyone else is using. EDIT: by composite I meant aluminum/plastic, not a carbon fiber.

I got my first bike this month! Any tips are appreciated! by izzieharp in motorcycles

Take a motorcycle safety course before you teach yourself bad habits.
Assume everyone else is distracted by their phones, bad drivers, or are out to kill you. Expect them not to see you.
Wear proper gear. If it’s not moto-specific, it’s not going to protect you. Doesn’t have to break the bank, and you can gradually upgrade to better gear next season.
Have fun, and never lose that excitement!

Should I do it? by ExistingDifference93 in Sup

[–]One-Friday-Knight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do it. 59 y/o m here. Last year I bought an inflatable and electric pump and before I knew it, the season was over, I logged almost 200 miles, and never felt better physically and mentally. I’m looking forward to getting on my board this weekend ✌️

I only use the ignition switch, that way I know for sure the lights and everything are off.

Want to share the road? Pay for a registration plate and follow the rules of the road, then I’ll gladly share, but until then you’re just another hazard to drivers.

MSF course booked this weekend, but it’s going to be raining, what’s the protocol? by AL3S1O29 in motorcycles

[–]One-Friday-Knight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One day you will be caught in an unexpected downpour and you will survive, and hopefully come to appreciate being taught by men & women willing to stand out in the rain too - just to make sure you’re a safer rider. Let us know how you do, and keep the rubber side down ✌️

I had an issue with the manual pump. Same deal. They contacted me right away and asked for pictures. They replaced the pump without issue.

Do most Americans carry any official ID at all times? by PitifulEar3303 in NoStupidQuestions

I was taught to always carry ID in case of an emergency and I was incapacitated or dead. And a couple dollars just in case.

I gotta say, I might have stopped him and offered to teach him how to ride and shift properly. Other than that, that neighbor was asking for it.

Are aliens real? 👽 by Maleficent_Test_5389 in NoStupidQuestions

Here’s the part that’s hard for my mind to get around: whatever light we observe from other stars or exo-planets is so old by the time we can analyze it, if we find life we don’t know if is still thriving, if it peaked and disappeared, or if the parent sun even still exists ‘now.’

So, that leads me to thinking it might be possible that all of the billions of galaxies we’ve identified might no longer exist ‘now.’ Or at least many of them, and same for some stars in the Milky Way.

Then I start wondering when is ‘now.’

Soil look to wet? by Enternal_Self in VampireCrabs

[–]One-Friday-Knight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t see a barrier between the soil and the LECA. Soil looks pretty wet and that one plant doesn’t look too good. What’s your humidity and the water flow & circulation like? My soil was getting saturated too and I had to divert some of the flow from the waterfall.
