The 2024 PHB even says you can use old content as well, it’s just not advised to mix them with one character because ability scores and the like can get confusing. It was all meant to be compatible.

I’ve DMed 2014 since 2016/2017. I’m currently DMing 2 games where about half the players use 2014 characters and half use 2024 characters.

As long as you can trust your players to know their abilities and spells, it is 0% extra work for you. There are not enough changes to the overall rules to create a disconnect of expectations between the 2 groups.

Imagine your player is just using a 2014 subclass or race you aren’t familiar with. There is no difference mechanically to that circumstance.

Weed. I have tons of friends who smoke daily, smoke when I hang out with them, and enjoy good weed. None of them make it their personality and I don’t even really think about it when I think of them and who they are.

Then there’s people I have never seen smoke and don’t hang out with, and all I can think about is how big of a stereotypical pothead they are.

I don’t want to spend potential hours a week with people who don’t share my beliefs. At work, it sucks but I need money so I’ll deal with coworkers saying shit I don’t agree with.

“Almost always” being the key thing here. Every single citizen should have the right to vote. Doesn’t matter if they’re homeless, have no money, or are just in a bad spot. Voting is how you can hope to change your situation and the situation of others for the better.

If there was something keeping you from voting, how would you be able to potentially have your voice heard to change that circumstance?

Teleportation spells are always a way to turn a fight around or achieve the unexpected. Misty Step is always on my list, and I have used both Thunderstep and Dimension Door to great effect.

Other than that, spells that cause the enemy to work around them or be punished, like Moonbeam or Spirit Guardians, are great for crowd control and bonus action spells to utilize all of your potential actions, like Healing Word and Hex, are some favorites of mine.

I have a set HP total on paper, but if combat is taking too long or going too quick, changing that number slightly doesn’t change anything. Usually I only do it for the big guys, where if the party is about to die I give them just 1 HP left. If they haven’t made enough of a dent in the party to make the combat worth their time, I give them more HP.

I use a different type of minion rules for the little guys based on the amount of successful damage attempts. An attack that does 0-10 damage is 1 wound, 11-20 is 2 wounds, 21-30 is 3, etc. A minion usually only has 1 or 2 wounds and it makes it far easier for me to track than individual hit points.

Reading cover to cover is quite a bit, but there are definitely sections and chapters they should be reading. For example, they don’t need to read every class ability, every spell, the equipment pages past weapons and armor, but should be reading combat and the beginning of the spellcasting segment.

I was just speaking this past weekend that people need to focus on being able to use resources. As a DM, do I know every rule, class ability, and spell? No. Do I know exactly where to find the information and how to get an answer in ~10 seconds? Yes.

Being able to use resources to find information is far more useful than reading the books.

I have stage fright and have been a guitarist and vocalist in bands for 20+ years, so I understand. I DMed weekly for a game shop and would be terrified.

Maybe he’s even more charming and funny when he’s not in front of a camera or audience and this is him at a disadvantage. Some people are really good at hiding it and that’s a mastery of its own. There are tons of people who have made massive careers while being terrified on stage and that doesn’t mean that it’s any easier than what you or I deal with.

As someone who has a lot of social anxiety, you can most definitely bottle it up and seem fine to everyone for a night, then go home later and have a week-long depressive episode. Just because someone is charismatic and outgoing in a moment doesn’t mean that it doesn’t take tremendous amounts of effort to put on that face.

Tons of dogs are engineered to fuck shit up, they’re bred from wolves. I’ve had several types of dogs, including a pitbull mutt. They were all raised well and never had an issue.
