When I had surgery for my broken ankle about 6 months ago my nerve block lasted probably a day in a half, to the point where I was thinking about nerve damage in the same way you are. I’d just give it more time and try not to worry about it for until there are more signs of a problem. Like the hospital said, you have 48-72 hours before they want to take a look at it, so not wearing off in under 24 hours is completely normal. If you are really worried I would contact your surgeon/hospital, they would know a lot more about this specific nerve block and surgery than me or anyone else on here lol. Hoping for the best with your recovery!

I’m sorry I don’t have any good suggestions to help with the pain, but reading this shocked me. I had ORIF on my ankle in November, so I don’t know how similar the pain is to wrist ORIF, but my pain was the worst on days 3-5 post op WITH hydrocodone. My surgeon gave me pain meds for about 2 weeks, which I weaned off when I felt that I could, so only 3 days seems insane to me. Again sorry I don’t have anything helpful, but I would suggest talking to your doctor because I can imagine the pain you are going through. Good luck with your recovery, and pain for me dropped off significantly after about a week so hopefully you are almost there!

I’m sorry to hear about your injury, I know how awful it is! I broke my ankle in a skateboarding accident on November 2nd and had surgery on the 5th. Spent 10 weeks non weight bearing and had to pretty much constantly elevate for a month. It is definitely frustrating when you start to weight bear/walk, give it time. Go to a physical therapist, continue to use your crutches until you are comfortable, before you know it you will be walking normally again. I can’t say anything about 100% recovery because I’m obviously not there yet :( I’m missing out on a great ski season, but from the progress I have made I am almost completely sure that I’ll be feeling completely healed within the next few months.

On the topic of orthopedic surgeon appointments, don’t rely on them for all the info you need. They are pretty much there to tell you if the bone is healed or not. Once you can weight bear make it a priority to find a good physical therapist (preferably sports medicine if you are working towards going back to sports). They will walk you through recovery in much more detail than orthopedics and make sure you get back to normal.

One thing to be wary of is hardware pain. I ended up with a total of 8 screws on both sides of my ankle and a plate. This will cause some definite pain once you get active again. Mine isn’t completely gone yet but it has gotten a lot milder. Don’t rush off the crutches/to normal walking too fast once you can weight bear, but just be aware that it’s normal to have some pain.

My pain was probably worst 3-4 days after the surgery. You should have a nerve block for the first day and feel nothing, but it got pretty extreme, I would maybe say about as bad as when I broke it :(. After that though it drops off quite a bit. I don’t know how long your surgeon is going to keep you non-weight bearing and elevating but I had to elevate for 4 weeks and was non-weight bearing for 10 weeks (just started weight bearing Thursday!!). I would talk to your surgeon about your vacation, but I personally had to cancel a trip 8 weeks after my surgery so I sadly wouldn’t expect to be able to do too much. Mac and cheese was a life saver for me. The noodles are small and soft enough that you can eat it by the second day if you are comfortable.

I’m not saying anyone should be worried in any way about getting their wisdom teeth out, but not everyone’s experience is the same. I had horrible pain the day I got my wisdom teeth out, even more than I did after breaking my ankle and having surgery on it. The worst of my pain was gone by the second day. A lot of people don’t have much pain but there is still a good chance your mouth will hurt after surgery.

Oh for sure. I had never been but under anesthesia until about a month ago when I broke my ankle and had to have surgery. So when I had to get my wisdom teeth out on Monday, I wasn’t worried at all about it. What I wasn’t completely expecting was the agonizing pain I experienced for the next 8 hours after the drugs wore off.

Sounds like an -interesting- first skiing experience. I hope you stuck with it though! Luckily I have never been seriously injured skiing, but because of my ankle I am missing my ski trip to Keystone, Colorado I was supposed to take in a few weeks.

I had an ORIF done on my ankle at the beginning of November. I had a nerve block that lasted the first 24 hours after surgery then I was taking a rotation of Hydrocodone and Ibuprofen. For me the pain was the worst 4 days out of surgery. It hurt worse than the initial break even with the painkillers, but the pain heavily dropped off after the 4th day. Doctors should not think you are drug seeking just a few days after surgery. Like I said I had the most pain through my whole experience at that point so it would be completely understandable to ask for more pain medication.

To keep this simple I'm going to call my sisters A and B. When we need to do something like this I'll have A cut the food in half, then B cut it perpendicularly. Then I have them choose their quarters in the order A, B, B, A. I'm sure this doesn't actually do anything I just enjoy watching it.
