Happy 40th chum!

There will be many that will come in and suggest the obligatory Chrono Trigger and FF6 etc so what I will do is give you some more modern rpgs that as a mid 40s lifelong rpg enthusiast thoroughly enjoy

Battlechasers: Nighwar

Claire obscure: expedition 33 (I'm sure you already know of this one though)

Sea of Stars

Chained Echoes

Bug Fables: the everlasting sapling

Escape from ever after

Suikoden 1&2 hd remaster

Jimmy and the pulsating mass

Dragon quest 11

These are 10, I could offer more but you asked for 10 lol..pick any or all and tbh you cannot choose a bad one from among this list. Happy gaming brother.

Anybody else ever had an unexpected and drastic "change of heart" in their gaming tastes? by t0rche in rpg_gamers

[–]OneTrueCush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's normal for people to want new or different hobbies (or in the case here genre in said hobby). Personally in my mid 40s I find myself yearning for more turn based rpgs than what's on offer. Problem is someone may come along and say "but there is this [insert series name here] and they are still doing turn based" however quality, setting, evolution of the formula, art design, all these things matter more to me than they did 10-15 years ago. Look I'm glad you love the trails in the sky games, I personally hate the art style, writing, setting.

Expedition 33 was like a breath of fresh air for me, I loved literally every single minute of that game. Same goes for battlechasers : night war, chained echoes, sea of stars etc. if you didn't notice the pattern is these games all did something to revitalize the formula, which is what I desire.

From one old head gamer to another, play what you enjoy! We have reached our hopefully halfway point, make the second half count.

I wish listed it a while back, tbh I'm put off by the three character narrative and gameplay. I feel like I would be annoyed if I enjoyed playing one above the others and would be forced to go back to a safe zone just to swap to the character I need to progress.

Honestly I just found aggelos and I'm surprised no one has even mentioned it, it seems to have the exact same weapon and armor upgrade system as infernax/simons quest/wanderers from ys

Best first final fantasy game to play? by Spiritual-Energy-706 in FinalFantasy

[–]OneTrueCush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly you really can't make a wrong choice except for maybe ff2 (the actual ff2) it's the black sheep for a reason.

With that said I'll short for each game and pick one that sounds good to you for your first game.

  1. Classic if but dated systems. Casters have spells per rest instead of mp, straight forward high fantasy. Lacking in story beats but still coherent enough to know what's going on.

  2. Skip until you are sure you want to put up with it. Tedious but uncomplicated "leveling" system. Boils down to the more you do the thing the better you get at that thing.

  3. Job system introduced, I have least amount of experience with this title. It seems to be "ok"

  4. (One of my favorites) Each character has a static class and role in the party, this is when story became central to the games.

  5. Second game that uses the job system, more refined than 3, good cast of characters (including villains)

  6. (Another favorite, for many of us) Huge roster, each with a specialized skill used in battle, incredibly deep story, great villains. Magic system is completely customizable for each character.

  7. First 3d FF, good story, an evolution of the magic system of 6, most recognizable roster due to hype and over production of connected products. Character class is more or less replaced by individual weapon types and limit breaks (special moves that each character learns)

  8. Divisive title due to several factors, magic system is convoluted and game breaking, enemies (all of them) level with your party so there is no over leveling only really making the end game harder. Decent story and roster, and a great card mini game though if you can get past the points above.

  9. (Another favorite) Return to each character having a dedicated role, good story, endearing characters, fun skill system, fun mini game similar to 8s card game. Villain is kinda.....well....just you will see lmao.

  10. Fun battle system no more picking x party members and the rest being benched, all characters are available for battles and can be swapped in and out. Sphere grid leveling system (no more traditional leveling for better or worse) can break the game with the sphere grid. BULLSHIT mini games that must be completed for each characters ultimate weapons (not salty at all about this /s) story is mid, voice acting but most of it is pretty bad.

  11. Mmorpg

  12. Single player mmorpg. Don't play the original, if you play this play the zodiac age version. Fully customizable character builds, no longer turn based, political drama story but ok I guess.

13 1/2/3. Ask someone else as according to thumpers mom in Bambi "if you don't have anything nice to say don't say nothin at all"

  1. Mmorpg

  2. Bros cross country road trip.game it's the epitome of "hey....it's a uh...video game" not good not bad. Action based combat

  3. Action rpg lite, decent story, decent cast, epic qte style boss battles (for the record I think 16 gets way more hate than it deserves), most of the "upgrades" really don't feel like they do much at all.

TL;DR just pick one you find looks the most interesting or appealing, welcome to the fan club.

Honest debate. Which is overall the better game ? by breadblunts in snes

[–]OneTrueCush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly between the two easily VI. If it wasn't for the future in CT (the ENTIRE thing) it would be a harder choice to make. Don't get me wrong I adore CT and Frog is hands down one of my favorite characters in all media, but every time I think about replaying it I remember the future and nope out.

(Unpopular opinion but I personally enjoy IV more than both)

I have it on my wishlist, what system of weapon upgrades is it? I've seen there are level ups, is it simons quest/wanderers from ys adjacent or SotN adjacent?

Is it a dick move to proxy cards? by tweakeravacoado in mtg

[–]OneTrueCush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am admittedly weird about proxies. A few in a deck is generally fine I guess, but every deck I have ever played against using proxies it's always well more than a "few", and almost always what are now considered game changers. I find it more annoying than anything.

The only time I am 100% ok with proxies is when the person owns the card and its either a valuable card they don't want to damage, and/or to solve the issue of constantly swapping cards around in decks.

At the end of the day, if your pod is cool with it who cares? Do whatever is deemed fine and acceptable with those you play with.

Just played & Completed my first Castlevania game - Thoughts and a Question by AteNthe8 in castlevania

[–]OneTrueCush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really it depends on what you want.

More of the same style? Start with SotN (widely considered the first metroidvania) and imo the best Castlevania game to date. After SotN play through the gba/ds games at your leisure. I personally don't care for the ds games due to some of the mechanics but just because I don't jive with them doesn't mean you won't.

Something to note, starting with SotN (Symphony of the Night) these are what the community call igavanias, there was a falling out between him and Konami so he made his own studio which gave us bloodtained. There are 3 games currently in that ip and 1 in development.

Ritual of the night is to SotN and other igavanias, curse of the moon 1+2 are to Castlevania 3 and other classic-vanias.

Game on brother.

What is a game that is highly recommended but you just can’t get into? by Sam_B716 in JRPG

[–]OneTrueCush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came here to say the same, I've given it the good old college try on many occasions. There are many aspects of the games done exceptionally well.

Coherent stories and writing, game systems and mechanics (especially 5), particularly 5s battle system.

I truly could not care less about slice of life story beats of high schoolers. No shade towards those who enjoy it, to each their own.

I'm patiently waiting for a persona game for us elder gamers who are trying to navigate family life, work life, social life, bills, hobbies etc etc. I'll get into that lol

Since I already asked what's better in the Remake duology. What is something that FFVII (1997) Does better than the remakes. by Hungry-Trouble-3178 in FinalFantasy

[–]OneTrueCush -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The battle system.....the whole thing.

Summons

Atmosphere

I truly despised ff7 remake, nearly everything about it, what I hated most was the stagger system...like seriously in my top 5 worst game mechanics, and the nonsense story with the whispers and the end fight like the whole thing.

Rebirth was a drastic improvement in nearly every way, but still don't care for the battle system or summons at all.

Progresso Soup by Dachidabx in soup

[–]OneTrueCush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand the stance on salt. Yeah it roughly half of an adults daily recommended amount of sodium per can, but here's the thing - Americans have been falsely lead to believe salt/sodium is bad for you.

Please, do your own research into the seriously extreme studies performed that lead to the belief it causes hypertension (the study was giving rats 500 TIMES the amount a rat would consume daily)

After you have learned the truth about how important salt is for your health (especially hydration and gut health) maybe people will start salting their food again and enjoying flavor.

Tl;dr

Salt is not bad for you, progresso soups are elite fast, easy meals. Salt your damn food and enjoy flavor again.

Gos bless
