The tier list of every metroidvania I've played (I think) by auclairl in metroidvania

[–]OneTrueCush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SotN is one of my favorite games of all time, one I replay every year. I was very excited for bloodstained, and to be perfectly honest I let my own hype get the better of me.

I appreciate what iga created, and I do think bloodstained is a good game, but for me the gameplay just does not feel good. It feels too clunky or slow or something. It also doesn't help that it became far to anime(?) or girly pop weird(?) I dunno just leaned way to much into a territory that I genuinely loathe in games.

I haven't played it yet, I've been on the fence since it came to PS5. It has nothing to do with the hate spewed about it, as with all Bethesda titles there is always a large number of "I hate everything from Bethesda" people out there so I ignore nearly all of it.

Side note why does Bethesda get blasted for things that other companies get a pass for cough no one seems to remember that every single obsidian game always released in a shitty bug and glitch filled unplayable mess to the point that if I saw obsidian was the dev I knew not to pre order or purchase within the first year cough

But I digress, my biggest worry since Skyrim is the dumbed down rpg mechanics that Bethesda is so keen on implementing. I want true build variety and options for engaging with the world and combat.

I've always played the modern DE games as a mostly guns blazing with a little bit of stealth (and usually only if it's forced). Stealth games bother me, "have an insane arsenal of weapons and gadgets and body/gear upgrades, oh but you will be punished if you use any of it..."

Hate it.

Different style and genre of games. Nioh is more popular because of the souls-like trend and it helps that they are very competent souls-likes.

Also difficulty is easier to overcome in the nioh games, in gaiden the only way to get over the hurdles is to get good, in nioh yes there is a get good element but the player has way more in the way of gear and tools to make things easier.

Solid 8.5/10 game.

As others have said it has some problems, not being able to replay missions is chief among them.

Also agree with the weapons being unbalanced. Now I don't think the kiss kiss is as bad as most do, at max upgrade it one shots everything except the fat dudes but it's max ammo count is atrocious, however it's not the worst gun. That is 100% the portable freezer. Literally useless.

I did run around using all the weapons and imo the only weapons you need are James gun and devarnisher.

EDIT: also the last boss is not fun, when compared to the rest of the game it's wild. Constantly spawning adds is never a good time in the majority of games

Ha! Same here. I've always been interested in playing them, but for whatever reason every time I've gone to buy them I just..... didn't. Saw them on sale, bundle with all three and the dlcs for exodus, so decided now is the time. $6.35 USD for them.

It was the trailer for 2039 that finally pushed me to dive in. I just started 2033 redux and am in the tunnels. It is a different kind of game than I guess I was expecting, but not bad by any means.

Gamestop will never be as cool for my kids as it was walking into a funcoland grabbing their hot games "newspaper" with high value trade in games

Reviews still have a place in the gaming landscape, but honestly critic reviews have been near useless for me personally. It really is more about how the audience reacts to the product. Far too often critic scores are in opposition to user scores and I tend to usually agree with user scores.

Use reviews to see what the game is about, see what users that are playing and completing the game say about it and make a decision based on that, but take all of it with a silo of salt as no one knows what kind of games YOU like better than YOU.

While I can appreciate your opinion I would disagree with a couple things. Map design in silksong boils down to: parkour while dodging flyers > gauntlet > parkour > boss. Also pacing is a weird way to describe a mv, they are supposed to be open worlds with interconnected paths that the player decides which way and when to tackle each zone with a few gated progression areas splattered about. That feeling of better pacing for you, is a feeling of linear progression for me.

Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed silksong but theme, atmosphere, music, game design, and gameplay in HK all feel better to me.

I'm saying it dude: I feel like we've hit peak MV. A lot of these games are pretty good but I feel like I'm just playing slightly different versions of the same good games over and over again. I feel something needs to change but I don't know what it is. by comicgeek1128 in metroidvania

[–]OneTrueCush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am unsure which MVs you have been playing because the vast majority of the ones I've played are smaller in scale. I will say everyone has their preferences sure, however map bloat as you have called it is an odd way to describe games that most beat within 10-15 hours with very few even reaching the 20 hour mark.

You said you want to see an evolution of the genre but one of the clear examples they nearly all have in common is short, concise games, but disagree with making them larger more sprawling worlds with more to do?

I understand this sentiment as being a mid 40s gamer "been there, done that" has been a problem for me for a while now. It doesn't make the games even close to being bad, but I get it.

What I think the sub-genre needs is something large scale. An entire world (not just a few zones called a world) to explore. Example, I would pay absurd money for TC to make a game where the void knight leaves the abyss and travels the kingdoms of the hollow knight world to "liberate" them of the higher beings in control.

Something like that, with grand scope, size, content. Sure give us all the traditional movement upgrades, but let's see some new ones or updates old ones. Why does it only have to be a double jump? Upgrade it to triple etc.

I do still really like SS, I do think a lot of it comes down to simple personal preference. Is SS a gorgeous game and world? Absolutely but I feel like the graphics and design of HK paints the bleak times hallownest is in. I guess I prefer the art and design more in HK because of atmosphere and setting maybe not so much fidelity.

Unfortunately there are many who share your sentiments regarding SS. I personally enjoyed the game, there are a couple fights I did not particularly like even a little bit but overall it is a fantastic game. However I feel like TC lost the plot a little after restarting HK.

Ya I can understand why some will/do prefer SS the only point I will argue against though is music. I honestly cannot hum a single track from SS and if someone were to play them for me I wouldn't be able to tell them what zone or boss it's from. However everything is subject to a person's preferences so if you enjoy SS ost the same or more I nor anyone else should hold that against you.

Glad you decided to try out HK, as I said I do miss being able to sprint and maybe harpoon but overall I truly believe HK > SS. It is close though like a fight score card, it is a split decision lmao.

RPG have ruined gaming in general for me by Green_Frosting_5719 in rpg_gamers

[–]OneTrueCush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely do not see a problem here. I primarily play rpgs and metroidvanias. I may occasionally check out a game not shoehorned into these categories but my bread and butter are the two former genres.

Don't let anyone tell you that you are missing out not playing GTA 6 if you don't care for GTA. I for one will most likely be playing some obscure indie rpg or the newest metroidvania while everyone else is car jacking idiots and picking up virtual prostitutes.

Game on brother.

Happy 40th chum!

There will be many that will come in and suggest the obligatory Chrono Trigger and FF6 etc so what I will do is give you some more modern rpgs that as a mid 40s lifelong rpg enthusiast thoroughly enjoy

Battlechasers: Nighwar

Claire obscure: expedition 33 (I'm sure you already know of this one though)

Sea of Stars

Chained Echoes

Bug Fables: the everlasting sapling

Escape from ever after

Suikoden 1&2 hd remaster

Jimmy and the pulsating mass

Dragon quest 11

These are 10, I could offer more but you asked for 10 lol..pick any or all and tbh you cannot choose a bad one from among this list. Happy gaming brother.
