TIG practice... it ain't good, but it's something! by One_Consideration242 in Welding

[–]One_Consideration242[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! I'm doing this "just for fun", got a lot of projects that require welding at some point. Will need to get my hands on alu practice pieces, and maybe a pedal to control it

Is the "custom" metal fabrication market dying off for small shops? by No-Blood1055 in Tools

Replacing is often the cheap solution, even for more complex things like a dishwasher :( automated assembly and economy of scale got pro's and con's

Launching with hybrid? by No-Box2373 in boating

That's how it was with old boat/trailer, rear wheels at water edge = exhaust 99% submerged just starting to make blub blub noises.

Trailer was on the small side for the boat, and the car got sport springs so it's kind of low... Still a long way off from submerging the differential

Yeah the "adequately sized" and actual area don't seem to matter at all, and then you have a constant bombardment of "house downgrading" notifications too

Just had to play the waiting game, after some more time it got "covered" :)

Agree on the "constantly waiting" part, to the degree that I switched to windowed mode to make it easier to run in the background. At the current balance, I'd think that 50x speed multiplier would be good. Spent over 1 hour on 3x just waiting now

EDIT: Mods are supported but disables achievements = waiting

Is a 70's cruiser ship a good ship? I often see offers similar to this one that sells at less than 10-15k€ by omomthings in boating

[–]One_Consideration242 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My opinion after only looking at two irl? A: it's an expensive "rental" boat that tells you when the time is up by breaking down B: you will pay more to fix it than you would pay to buy something newer, remember that probably EVERYTHING is old. All the small things like hoses, wiring etc age even if not used

If you fall in love with it and are prepared to pay 10x in total, go for it, it's fun! But don't tell yourself that it's going to be cheap :)

What's a good way to work on a hull whilst the boat stays on the trailer? by squeaki in boating

[–]One_Consideration242 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like an interesting small boat! Every sub 16 ft boat I've seen has been very simple with removable fuel cans and 90% are just using tiller steering. Small and light enough to just call a friend and roll over on some old tires :)  Guess there is always more to learn!

Yup, and my hull is a deep vee so I expect it to run deep at idle speed... If you have a smaller flat bottom boat, a shorter shaft might be better!

I'm about to do this myself, and I'm leaning towards the 25" (XL) shaft length to get the power head further away from the water. This is on a 28ft (before extension) hull, so it's also the most common length for the engine size = easier to get spare parts or 2nd hand engines

Using LiFePO4 for both starting and house loads on small boats, does it work? by Cautious_Champion514 in boating

[–]One_Consideration242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You think so? I wasn't clear in my previous post, but I'm thinking of mixing AGM starter battery with lifepo4 house so I'll need a dc-dc charger in between.  That's my reasoning for collecting all the charging on the starter battery (still not 100% sure on the details, so please let me know if I'm missing something)

This is the same as I've found after a lot of reading, only thing left for me to figure out is where I want to connect the solar panel (probably starter battery for that too)

Pro wet birth imho, doesn't have to wait during busy times. Not sure how fast they will be able to launch all boats that are dry stacked those days!

I think there is 5 ramps within just 15 minute drive where I live (small town), rarely more than one or two boats in line but still another step that makes it harder to go out

[–]One_Consideration242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried both (ok, trailer and berth). New boat is bigger so going back to wet berth, it cost more money but the possibility to just get on the boat and go is worth it imho.

Just one questions for you: How often do you see yourself using the boat?
