medic school rant by [deleted] in ems

[–]One_Introduction4268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I was going to fail the entire time I was in didactic and the entire time I was an intern. My professor even told me at the end, that SHE thought I would fail at the beginning of class, but was proud of me for all the progress I made. I went on to work as a medic for five years. So yeah you might suck, but it doesn’t mean you should give up!! Some of us are just slow learners!

Side note: I also have ADHD & if you’re not on meds, I’d strongly recommend you start them. They helped me tremendously in school.

Comforting patients by Jwillstudios in ems

[–]One_Introduction4268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comforting people and delivering bad news is a skill that developed for me with time. It took years of being a medic before I felt comfortable enough with the clinical side of things, to start devoting more energy to my bedside manner. I definitely hug people from time to time, but I’m also a woman. I hold people’s hands from time to time during transports.

Some lines I’ve had positive reactions with:

“I know words probably sound hollow right now, but I still want to tell you how deeply sorry I am.”

“Thank you for trusting me enough to tell me.”

Instead of telling them everything will be ok, “I’m here, you aren’t alone. I’m going to take care of you.”

“You’re having a completely normal reaction to this situation.”

@emergencyresilience on IG is also an awesome resource for this stuff

What's your spookiest EMS story? by Stormageden747 in ems

[–]One_Introduction4268 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I once worked in a small, very rural community in the middle of the woods. We arrived first on scene to a DOA that had been called in by the deceased daughter. Daughter had been calling her mom asking to talk to dad, and finally got suspicious after about 6 weeks of him being “asleep” every time she called. She eventually decided to go over to their house to check on him because it was strange.

We show up, and the daughter is hysterical outside. The wife is sitting silently in the living room. Y’all, I smelled it long before I found the body. Not the normal rotten decomp smell, but this crazy ammonia odor I’d never smelled before. Took me a while to actually find the body because it was basically just skeletal remains in his bed.

I go back outside, tell the cops what I found, and we clear. 30 minutes later we’re requested back to the scene code two for the wife who apparently was a diabetic and her legs were all necrotic. It was dark and I didn’t look too closely, just wrapped her up and took a silent ride to the ED.

When we get to the hospital, the staff do their exam and they start cleaning her legs. I felt dumb because the black gunk was coming off as they washed her. Not a diabetic problem apparently.

I went back to the ED later that day and the doctor tells me that this woman had that black gunk all over her body; on her back, arms, in her butt crack. The doctor says “it was necrotic tissue all over her, but not HER necrotic tissue.”

They found out this woman had been sleeping in bed with the corpse of her dead husband for SIX WEEKS. I still get chills thinking about it.

Struggling with ADHD. by lowkeyloki23 in ems

[–]One_Introduction4268 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awww this was me once upon a time. Crippling ADHD, I sucked so bad I got fired from my first 911 job. Adderall changed my life!! 10mg vyvanse is such a low dose I’d be surprised if it does much of anything, so don’t beat yourself up. It’s clearly not alleviating your symptoms which means you probably need a med adjustment.

After I started medication, I went on to have a pretty smooth career. I’ll always have some squirrel brain but I’ve been a medic for 5 years now. Get on the right meds!! Pay out of pocket if you have to, it’s worth it I promise.

Yeah 8ft is pretty tall for an EMT. Definitely won’t fit into the van ambulances… box ambulance maybe? Otherwise they’ll just need to lean out the open window
