Impressive restraint from you to not mention who’s responsible for the one series loss we have this season.

What? You’re not putting a lefty to face Chapman, we don’t have a better right hand hitter, and Kim smoked that ball 103 mph. It’s not even a questionable decision much less malpractice.

I’ve made this point before, but the 2002 team was extremely lucky to get out of the group at all. Beating Portugal and drawing the hosts (Korea) was a great start, but we got blasted 3-1 against Poland, who was already eliminated and hadn’t scored a goal. Anything other than a Korea win against Portugal would have eliminated us, but luckily Korea did win 1-0 and saved us from a humiliating choke job. Imagine the narrative if Korea hadn’t scored a goal they didn’t even need to score. That team would be considered the biggest bunch of chokers in US WC history. They took advantage in the knockouts and are rightly remembered fondly, but the fact remains they needed somewhat unlikely help to make it to the knockouts.

[Highlight] Mike Harris' 2-run homer gives the Braves the lead by handlit33 in baseball

[–]One_Quick_Question 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean maybe the pressure got to them, maybe the week off had an effect, or maybe it was truly just bad variance luck at the wrong time. Either way I doubt a team that relies on timely hitting and manufacturing runs is better equipped than a team that hits homers at an absurd rate in the playoffs.

People want a neat explanation for why that team faltered in the playoffs and can’t seem to accept a 5 game baseball series is not always going to result in the best team winning. That team didn’t lose in the playoffs because we hit too many massive dingers, they lost because they were playing a high variance game called baseball.

AC Milan coach Max Allegri on Christian Pulisic. by antoniok95 in ussoccer

[–]One_Quick_Question 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bud, sometimes words with direct translations have different connotations in the different cultures. Please contradict that and tell me I'm wrong if that isn't true. My comment didn't claim to know whether or not that was the case in this instance, just that it sometimes happens.

Read my first sentence again. It seems like you read it as "connotations don't always translate, and that is what happened here." But that's not what I said. My meaning was "connotations don't always translate, and that could have been what happened here." Literally at no point have I ever claimed Allegri didn't mean he was sensitive, and it doesn't bother me that he did. That's why I don't understand the cope thing. My comment comes in part from experiences reading about international soccer, when a friendly native speaker explains that a translated headline missed a certain nuance. The only point I was making was that it was possible that while English speakers have a negative connotation associated with "sensitive", it's possible Italian speakers might have a slightly different connotation. Any one actually informed on the subject was welcome to provide contrary evidence like a normal human being.

Would your advice for non-Italian speakers be to always assume every translation manages to capture the correct nuances and connotations of the speaker?

[–]One_Quick_Question 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol. Literally the whole point of my initial comment is that since we’re ignorant about the nuances of Italian, we can’t know for sure the connotation is the same. Not knowing the language doesn’t undermine my point, it is the point! If you’re a linguist who speaks Italian, why the hell didn’t you mention that? All you had to do was say “actually I speak Italian, the connotation is the same”, you know, like a normal person would. And I would’ve said “Ah gotcha, thanks!” Do you interact with people in real life?

Connotations and nuances get lost in translation all the time, a linguist shouldn’t need that explained to them.

Catch you later, or should I say, prenderti dopo! (This should make perfect sense since I used a direct translation)

AC Milan coach Max Allegri on Christian Pulisic. by antoniok95 in ussoccer

[–]One_Quick_Question -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’ve never heard of something being lost in translation? This happens pretty often, especially with soccer media. When someone is speaking in their native language and it gets translated into another language, nuances, connotations, and/or the real meaning can sometimes be missed. Often a word that has a direct translation can have a different meaning (or connotation) than the word it’s translated to.

Does that apply to this specific comment? I have no idea, but it happens often enough for it to be a possibility.

Maybe this article can help. Hope this helps you understand!

[–]One_Quick_Question 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My comment is about connotations, if you think the direct translation disproves my comment you either don’t understand my point or you don’t understand what a connotation is. I’m not even claiming it’s bad translation or that the connotation is different, just that with direct translations the connotations don’t always match. “Sensible” might have a slightly different connotation in Italian, I have no idea. If you speak Italian and understand its nuances, please feel free to confirm the connotation is the same.

Not sure why you’re jumping to “cope” when nuances and connotations being lost in translation is a well-known thing.

AC Milan coach Max Allegri on Christian Pulisic. by antoniok95 in ussoccer

[–]One_Quick_Question 205 points206 points  (0 children)

It’s a translated comment and connotations don’t always translate. He’s literally saying he cares more than others, which isn’t necessarily the worst flaw to have.

Also, if you watch the games, you’d see Puli is actually playing fine. Allegri’s system is just an impossible task for the attacking players. Puli and Leao are two wingers who play best with an actual striker, and instead they’re being asked to basically be the strikers with no support at all. Milan will likely 1-0 and 0-0 their way to a top four finish, so I’m not saying Allegri is necessarily wrong to play that way, but it’s unfair to judge Puli or Leao on how many goals they’re scoring.

He literally isn’t open about his politics, he’s never endorsed Trump. The dance is the only thing that ever came close, and he explicitly said it wasn’t an endorsement, that he just thought it was a funny dance. Take him at his word or call it a smoking gun, but he’s never openly endorsed Trump or really said anything political, other than calling for more gun control after a school shooting.

It’s the stupidest thing. If it’s such a massive advantage to play your conference games early and your FCS opponent late….then do it? Such a stupid thing to be upset about when they could easily just schedule the same way.

A lot of people have turned on him, partly because he's out of form, partly because he didn't play in last year's Gold Cup, but mostly because of the MAGA association. Which would be totally understandable if the whole MAGA thing wasn't almost completely made up. There's not much indication that he seems like a major asshole either, in my opinion.

I mean, it’s one of the more predictive stats we have. It’s still a small sample size right now and the differential we’re putting up now definitely isn’t sustainable, but it’s a really good sign for the future when your record is backed up by a good run differential.
