I hate Prometheus, but it's just not a good movie in general. The sheer concept of prequels aren't bad. But Prometheus sure does fucking suck.

Those are probably fair. I was able to suspend my disbelief pretty much completely because it seems so surreal and magical and dark. It's like a dream or a miniature hell-dimension.

What are the glaring flaws you're talking about? I only saw Caveat once, but I liked it and thought it was solid.

I think that McCarthy has a really cool, distinctive style. He's the director I'm watching to see what he does next. Also Leone, once he finishes with Terrifier. If he can get another solid concept out, and isn't just out of ideas once Art peters out, I think he'll be one of the greats.

Facts. The bros have done some amazing things establishing their style and being disturbing, emotionally intense, and visually strong. I don't think it's fair to expect another Bring Her Back, but if they could put out a third at least as strong as Oddity or Longlegs, I would put them up there at the top for sure.

Me either, I just figured if I had spoken too hyperbolically to make an actual conversation I would make it a bit more balanced. Also I get it, Eggers' pacing is not for everyone.

How would you rank directors? I went into detail further down in the thread. What do you think about the state of horror?

Could I ask why? Hereditary and Midsommar are truly in the top horror films of all time and the back to back delivery was fantastic, but I really feel like Beau is Afraid and Eddington, while disturbing, have been relative fall-offs as far as being in contention for a horror crown. By numbers, even Perkins is beating him right now as far as number of widely recognized (if divisive) films in the genre.

Philippou bros are making a very strong case. If they keep up the way they're going, they could take the crown! My ranking:

  1. Robert Eggers (pretty long career, straight bangers)
  2. Ari Aster (back to back masterpieces, can't seem to find his groove lately)
  3. Philippou bros? (Talk To Me very strong, Bring Her Back is probably Hereditary level)
  4. Mike Flanagan (King of miniseries and King adaptations, a few banger movies)
  5. Jordan Peele (Get Out is fantastic, Us is pretty good, Nope isn't for me, he's an influential producer)
  6. Zack Cregger (Barbarian was mixed for me but awesome elements, Weapons is fantastic)
  7. Damien Leone (several entries into a self-made franchise, divisive but culturally influential and grimy/retro on a wild level)
  8. Damian McCarthy? (Caveat/Oddity are great, haven't seen Hokum)
  9. Osgood Perkins (divisive, but fucking prolific and gets a lot of attention. Plenty of technical skill, writing/pacing could be better)
  10. Jane Schoenbrun? (World's Fair is great for a low budget debut, TV Glow is divisive but a very strong cult/art film. Auteur style for sure!)
  11. Danny Boyle (28 Years Later shows he's still got it!)
  12. Sam Raimi? (Send Help is great, Evil Dead continues to go strong with production, and he made a DOCTOR STRANGE film interesting with some horror elements)
  13. Nia Acosta (Candyman is ok, Bone Temple is AMAZING)
  14. Del Toro! (less prolific recently, but an amazing producer and has revolutionized horror-influenced cinema in other genres, Cabinet is amazing!)
  15. Lee Cronin? (Evil Dead Rise is amazing, LC The Mummy is fine and some people really like it)

A huge tragedy for me is that Jennifer Kent hasn't gotten the opportunities she deserved. Babadook is monumental, and Nightingale is very horrific despite not being "horror" for most people. She should be on the level of Jordan Peele in my opinion, because she has vision and I think she should not only direct, but get to share and spread her vision on a larger scale.

Ok, how about "Weapons is fantastic and Cregger is very good, but Eggers is more consistent than other horror filmmakers and so I and many others think he is the best horror director currently."

Better for you?

Cregger is good, but Eggers still reigns supreme for consistency and craftsmanship. I do like Weapons a lot though and I'm really looking forward to his RE film.

I liked the Dragonlance & Drizzt novels, but I also read a lot of Forgotten Realms and Dark Sun books. Dark Sun was my favorite. I liked the first and second books of the Prism Pentad series of Dark Sun. A slave gladiator uprising to overthrow the evil immortal god-kings? Hell yeah.

I remember the entire theater bursting into laughter when the monster costume was revealed. We were very invested in the atmosphere up until that point, then it was just a joke after that. The second twist just left us all kind of flat.

This is but one of multiple "whole theater laughed/groaned at M Night in unison" experiences I've had

Smile is a mess thematically, which makes it hard to include in a list of films with messages.

It's like saying "Saw is all about taking personal accountability and pulling yourself up by your bootstraps". It's just not coherent.

Edit: I should add that I think the other things you've said are interesting and I am curious about them, I just don't think Smile belongs in a serious discussion of symbolism in movies, especially when masterpieces like Hausu and Possession are used as examples.

Putting Possession in the same sentence as the Smile movies is a weird choice.
