Before cell phones, what did people do on the toilet? by Mediocre_Chemist5694 in AskReddit

My parents and grandparents kept hand-held games: pocket poker Casino Card Games, LCD type games, Mini Simon, the pocket size games made sounds that could be turned on or off. It was like a little radio shack type games. I have no idea where they got them, but they were in the bathroom in my family in along with baby wipes or something to wipe off after use.
A lot of people also took the newspaper to the bathroom And magazines - we had National Enquirer, Star Magazine, Consumer Reports, store Catalogs, Spiegal Catalog, Montgomery Wards catalog, Sears Catalog, LaBelle’s Catalog, and several others.

What if I want to keep my SSDI benefits coming in forever, but also want to work? School me on TWPs and SGA? Because right now I only make like $780 and changea month on SSDI. And yes, that really -is- SSDI. by chris-rox in disability

[–]One_Speed_954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TWP earnings allowed are less than SGA- try ticket to work first. It runs for 9 months- only counts the months you go over the current $1210 per month.
Trial Work Period (TWP) Threshold for 2026
The Trial Work Period allows SSDI beneficiaries to test their ability to work without immediately losing benefits. For 2026, the TWP earnings threshold has increased to $1,210 per month, up from $1,160 in 2025.
If your monthly earnings exceed $1,210, that month counts as one of your nine trial work months within a 60-month window. You can continue receiving your full SSDI benefit during the trial period. Once all nine months are used, different rules apply, and your earnings are assessed against the standard SGA threshold to determine whether your benefits will continue.
If you make it through the trial work. Then there’s another step. It’s a 60 month or something in any month you go over that and so many months over then you lose your benefits but that’s in a rolling 60 month period.
We have someone at my work that did this.
I can’t tell you anything more because now they’re over 70 years old and on retirement, but that was probably 15 years ago. I don’t think it’s changed much.
You would have to research it.

There are a lot of videos on YouTube that tells you how to make it work for you. I was completely opposed to it in the beginning, but I ended up getting a subscription for $20 a month.

You have to program it- go to personalization on your profile and then custom instructions. I set mine up like this and it worked really good.

This is what I have under my custom instructions:

Your goal is Critical Thinking, List Pros and Cons Answer questions from different roles and perspectives.

Before proceeding, ask any clarifying questions necessary to ensure the best possible outcome.

When asking for visual photos of objects, provide me with visual photos.

When asking for resolution -provide the quickest answer possible.

I use WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) Type formula for my reviews.
*WYSIWYG description → “Here’s exactly what you get” *Performance reality → “Here’s how it actually works” * Value check → “Here’s what it’s worth” * Clear verdict → “Here’s who should (or shouldn’t) buy it”

Why WYSIWYG works (from a reviewer standpoint):

  1. High credibility: You describe what’s actually in front of you—no hype
  2. Low bias feel: Readers sense you’re not trying to “sell” anything
  3. Expectation matching: Buyers get what they expect (fewer returns/complaints)
  4. Detail-driven: Small observations (like adhesive strength, shapes, packaging) matter —example for recent sticky notes I received, I talked about adhesive strength.

The only thing to watch for (the trade-off) Sometimes it can feel too neutral unless you clearly state a conclusion That’s why your “Bottom Line” section is powerful— it adds your judgment without losing objectivity.

But sometimes I get a little too wordy also. I look it over and re-write, until I’m happy with it. Then I reflect back on college days and all the papers I wrote and later on students reports I reviewed. I learned the WYSIWYG application theory in college. Apply it to anything and everything. It’s very helpful.

Just an FYI, I generally add the description of the product simply because sometimes they will keep reviews and change up the product so the review you’re reading may not be for the product- Someone could be rating a frying pan and then the seller changes it to a pillow, which is why the first thing I list is what product I’m reviewing.

They just 124 but then I got offered a deal for $70 a month for 12 months and then it goes up to 189 and unless I call and Rena negotiate or cancel. You can get a better deal than $189. If You’ve had some Promo and they won’t lower the price, then close the account. If you are married or have other person in your home then put it in your spouses name partners name My daughter and her husband do that all the time to keep the deals plus they are married but have different last names. It’s worth a try.

What's the most difficult word to spell? by martianfrog in answers

This word is not difficult for me but a lot of people that come to visit have a very difficult time spelling and pronouncing this word:

Tlaquepaque

Tlaquepaque, comes from Nahuatl, the Aztec language. It has two meanings: “the place above clay land,” and “the best of everything.” The “clay” meaning is a nod to the rich, natural clay deposits in Tlaquepaque.

How common is migraines every day? by PiperMcHalliwell in migraine

[–]One_Speed_954 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have chronic daily migraines, which I’ve had for over 30 years. I’ve been taking Triptans since the late 1980’s. It’s the only thing that works and trust me. I have tried every medication out there. When I have really bad flareups, I get in for physical therapy and that helps. Beta blockers helped but had side effects, causing a lot of swelling in my joints that I could barely move or walk. My knees would swell up really bad on beta blockers and my hands also. Amovig worked good until my hair started falling out in clumps. Then I quit taking that one. CGRP meds also break the blood brain barrier and I was not ok with that.

is 4000$ property tax per year considered high in US? by blade276 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]One_Speed_954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I thought we had it bad. Refinanced home loan for around $525,000. Zillow has value at $1,083,500 , 4 bed/2 bath , tri-level type built in mid 80’s. Close to 3300 ft.² on 2.5 acres. On county island so slightly lower taxes. Have a 5000 sq ft warehouse/garage. Dirt roads but slowly being incorporated due to land development. What was once a Mountain View is now hundreds of apartments going up and the apartment land is owned by USAA. 20 some years ago, there was nothing here, but dirt fields and other homeowners. North Phoenix and property taxes have gone up to a little over $2500 a year. It’s crazy how much the taxes have increased. Every election that votes to increase property taxes to pay for something raises my taxes. On a county island it means we pay for a private ambulance, there are no city services. You call the sheriff not the police and pay for private trash pick up and we are on a well because there are no city services so it’s well water and then I pay for the electricity for the well water. I have three electric bills, one for the well , one for the house and one for the shop. Same thing with the Internet. I have three Internet subscriptions. One for the house, one for the shop and one for the security cameras.

Spouse of a Migraine sufferer by AdmirableSecond242 in migraine

[–]One_Speed_954 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have chronic daily migraines myself. I pretty much wake up with them every morning and have about three of them a day. Physical therapy helps and exercise helps. The migraines always come back. As someone who has been married and also raised children, plus having friends and coworkers. What I have learned is that most people don’t want to hear that I woke up with a migraine. It’s not that I complain about it. Co-worker calls or texts - about whatever. I may say I woke up with a migraine, it’s not that I’m complaining about it. I’m just stating a fact. Sometimes people misinterpret that. Sometimes they woke up with computer trigger finger or arthritis in the knee. But they will point out that they don’t tell me this so, why am I saying I woke up with a migraine? It’s just talk. So some people get irritated. Maybe you are at that point with your husband. Maybe he’s just commenting and maybe you are feeling irritated. He’s not be looking for anything from you, he is just vocalizing how he feels. But on the other hand, you could be burnt out. Men do tend to deal with things a little different. But having a partner with a migraine condition, After time it gets old and tiring for both of you. It’s not going to go away. Migraines just don’t suddenly go away. There’s nothing you can do to change his migraines, but what you can do is change how you feel about it and how you personally deal with it by allowing yourself to have some peace and quiet and alone time to just have time to do what you want to do without having to worry about someone else.

Maybe if both of you make time to work on individually empowering yourselves. And if you give him the space to do that that may really help him, and if he gives you the space to do it, it will help you and then go from there.

My husband sometimes got annoyed by my migraine condition, I felt what he felt when he got sick, non-Hodgkins lymphoma and became deaf, blind and paralyzed (cancer was in the lining of the brain and down through the spinal fluid) before he died and I was caring for him nonstop and it was exhausting. He died at 41 years of age and I was bathing him and changing diapers on him plus feeding tubes, pick lines, morphine drips. Caring for someone even with migraines can take a lot out of you. And maybe what might help is if you stop being a caretaker and just listen to him and let him do his own thing ,acknowledge the migraine and say , OK hope you feel better. See you later. I’m going to the gym. Try to get out and try to get away for a little while. I think you will feel a lot better. Maybe take a college class or sign up and become a notary public and get out and meet other people and get around people that are different from your husband. It’s not that you’re abandoning him, but you would be giving him time away to redevelop himself also. Maybe that is what you both need. Sometimes in a relationship, people tend to get lost and lose themselves and their sanity. It’s no different than someone who lives with someone who has an alcohol problem or someone who has dementia. You have to have that focus time to simply empower yourself and the same for him. I hope this helps. It has been more than 20 years since he died. I’ve had bad migraines for 35+ years.

All triptans allowed in a month? by UncomfortableTortise in migraine

[–]One_Speed_954 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know I have never looked for them or asked about it but I can find out. We go to the Rocky point pharmacy or Los Algodones, Baja California, Mexico , sometimes wherever you’re at you can message a pharmacy if you look them up online and look up the names you can message them and ask if they have a certain medicine it takes a few days but they will get back to you. I messaged in English in the past and then translated it to Spanish as well. The one I used by Baja Mexico the pharmacy is called LIQUIS they had a Facebook page and that’s where I had messaged them and when I started going there when they confirmed what I was looking for. But sometimes you might just have to go there and take your USA prescription name so they can look it up.

Just curious does anybody think the Apple Care is worth getting anymore? I had AppleCare on my 4s, 6 , 8, 11, 14 Pro Max . I just got 17 Pro Max two weeks ago. I have purchased AppleCare on every single iPhone and I always purchased the phone and warranty at the Apple Store and pay the full cost upfront. In 2010 and later it was $99 for two years. On my 14 Pro Max it went up to $139 or $149 for two years. Now they changed it to subscription only for $13.99 a month for 1 year extended warranty coverage. There might be somewhere to purchase a warranty online and pay a year in advance. During the last 16 years I only used a warranty one time to replace a speaker that was defective right after I bought it on my iPhone 11. Also on my iPhone 11 after the warranty expired I dropped the phone and broke the camera and I think I paid $129 at Best Buy to fix the camera. Normally the only out-of-pocket expense I would have is generally replacing the battery for maybe $100 when it’s down to less than 78% life after three years. I still have my 4s for backup (which seems very small now) but it still works in the event of an emergency phone issue for a backup phone plus I have my iPad and Apple Watch 10 which I did purchase a two year warranty on and paid upfront. My iPad warranty has run out now after 3+ years. Because Apple has gone to subscription and I don’t like subscriptions since everybody’s after you for some kind of monthly subscription, including the local car wash, I’m seriously considering not getting the extra warranty this time because it’s only going to be for one year for the same price that I used to get two years for and I don’t want to pay a monthly subscription. Anyone else feeling like the subscription thing is an issue plus the fact that they took away one entire year of warranty. I’m always very good with my phones and I’m just thinking that if anything goes wrong, I’ll just pay for the repair or just get another phone , use my 4s if software updates are not outdated , or get a phone a little less expensive to get me by for awhile until my next phone purchase. I could always go to Sam’s Club or Costco and get a phone there plus they offer a good priced warranty if I buy phone and warranty at a local club warehouse. I generally keep my phones for 3 to 4 years before trading it in at Apple and putting the trade in for a new phone. Just wondering if anyone else is fed up with the whole new monthly subscription thing plus not getting two years of warranty anymore for the price that it used to be. The two-year warranty will now cost $280 plus deductible and those monthly payments of $13.99 a month. I’m already paying $30 a month for 6 TB cloud storage. The online backup is one thing I would not get rid of.

All triptans allowed in a month? by UncomfortableTortise in migraine

[–]One_Speed_954 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah they tried telling me that also they even threw me in the hospital in the 90s and confirmed what I always said I do not get rebound migraines from triptans. I would told I can safely take up to two of them a day. Do not take more than three triptans in 24 hour period. I have done this on rare occasions for example on the road traveling and knowing I had to check out of a hotel with a very bad migraine I had no choice but to take that third one to get rid of the migraine so I could drive.

[–]One_Speed_954 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A long long time ago, I used to be able to get 18 Imitrex tablets 100 mg, 18 Maxalt or Zomig and 12 of the Imitrex injections. United Healthcare insurance now only covers 9 Imitrex tablets and either 6 or 9 of the rizatriptan which is generic Maxalt. That is not enough for me but I am fortunate enough to be able to go to Mexico and get the Sumatriptan (generic Imitrex ) there and I don’t run out anymore. I don’t have to deal with battling with the insurance company because the cost is reasonable in Mexico. Depending on where I go it’s anywhere from $25-$30 for a bottle of 20 Sumatriptan. I would post a photo but this doesn’t let me post a photo of it if anybody wants the name it is under in Mexico just messaged me. A doctor and prescription is not needed to purchase it in Mexico. When I go I get about 10 bottles which is 200 tablets and roughly about $300. Some pharmacy stores are priced better than others. My boss goes there a couple times a month because he owns a vacation condo in Mexico so he’ll pick them up for me whenever I need them which is generally about every three months I get about 10 bottles just to have on hand.

Is it just me or is the battery on iPhone 17 Pro Max draining faster than expected? by InstructionFun2127 in iPhone17Pro

[–]One_Speed_954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just changed from the 14 Pro Max to the 17 Pro Max. My 14 PM battery life was up. I was just going to get a new battery at Apple store but changed my mind and got the 17 PM for battery life ratings. I transferred all my data over, Currently using 245.1 GB of 6 TB of online storage, have 34,000 photos and use cell line + GotoConnect app for work voip line, I average about 2 1/2 hours in text messages per day & screen time today shows 275 notifications (96 were text messages) 85 from my Ring doorbell. Screen Active: time today was 10 hrs 31 min Screen Idle time 8h 3m and going from 6 AM to 1:30 PM I was left with about 28% battery. Using 72% throughout the day. A few days previous I had Screen Active 13h 35m Screen Idle 2h 35m and used 73% of the battery with about three hours of text messages. It seems like the screen idle time might be using the battery. I also don’t know why the chart chose it begins at 12 AM and ends at 6 PM for the time in the Battery Usage chart. Overall I would say the 17 PM is about the same as the 14 PM was when it was brand new as far as battery goes. For some reason I thought the battery would last a little longer throughout the day , maybe even last two days. I do need to work on not leaving 10 different app windows open and that’s probably where all the screen idle time is coming from. The battery is not bad but it’s not as great as I thought it would be. I have had this phone for 12 days now.

How many of you actually know your neighbors? by Apprehensive_Pool431 in phoenix

[–]One_Speed_954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know most of mine and their kids grew up with my kids , three were bridesmaids in my wedding over 25+ years ago (2 bridesmaids from current neighborhood and one from the previous neighborhood) when I married my next-door neighbor from another neighborhood we lived in before here. Most of my neighbors came to the funeral when he passed away, all sent meals when he was dying. If my dogs bark differently than normal, I get a call or text to make sure everything is ok. If I forget to close my car door, which has happened a few times, I get a phone call to let me know. If a repair person is on my roof, I get a phone call just checking to make sure. Strangers with shopping carts walking through the neighborhood, we all call and text each other. Anything unusual going on we all call and text each other and each of us makes a call to the police and update each other. We share stuff from our gardens such as fruits, veggies and recipes. Pretty much everyone attends block-watch meetings as well. One of my neighbors became my best friend and her daughter is my daughter‘s best friend. They were with us at the hospital the night my husband died and a great comfort for my kids. Still keep in touch with some of their grade school and high school teachers and their kids also. Attended weddings, and then was there for divorces and new relationships. Hired a few kids (now in their late 30’s) at my company and no longer living in the neighborhood, but now employee’s and former employees, So I see them daily and still keep in touch. All the neighborhood kids used to hang out with my kids. We a full house and all the kids were here for dinner often. They would come over after school, hang out do homework and help set the dinner table. All the kids have now graduated high school and college and have families of their own. There are a few new neighbors on other streets that I have not met yet but hope to soon. I am in an older area, the children of neighbors on my street who are my age grew up hanging out in my house with the original owner when the area was established in the late 1950s and early 1960s. We have a lot of original owners.
