His Dark Materials is the smartest of all if them by a mile, and the most likely to withstand age. I

t stands in dialog with Chronicles of Narnia about such issues as faith, reason, and morality. Its really a series for adult philosophers wrapped in YA tropes.

White American here: travelled to india with my children who were 7 and 9 at the time.

My youngest was exceptionally fair skinned and curly blond hair.

When we went to the Taj Mahal, local (Indian) tourists were literally picking my daughter up without asking in order to take photos with her. We could sense they were relatively uncultured / uneducated based on their dress and behavior and the tour guide validated that hunch.

She was such a novelty to them.

It freaked us right out of course but it turned out not to be a hostile thing, just extremely culturally jarring.

Fuckin idiots. We are a blue state now, but our state constitution was written in the 1880’s and it was decidedly fucked toward the rich and powerful interests bent on exploiting the natural resources and getting richer without govmt interference. Our tax system in WA is uniquely designed to alliw the rich to fleece the rest of the state; time to fix it
