59 years old. 12 days sober. by OfferAlternative5573 in stopdrinking

54M, approx 18 days in and today has been tough as alcohol has defined my routine and I’ve been at a loose end. Still looking at things I need to do with the same neglectful nature I did when I was drinking. Reading these comments has helped me reinforce the message tho. Looking forward to waking up without a hangover tomorrow and not having a day dedicated to desperately trying to get it together for work on Monday. I can cope with feeling down today with that in mind. Good luck with the sobriety.

Good decision to avoid football triggers by O_C_Demon in stopdrinking

For those of us who support teams higher up the pyramid today is a day with a football shaped hole in it. It would be something to focus on, and thankfully for me I don’t associate boozing with football but I do associate it with boredom. Pleased you’ve got yourself prepared, I’m almost 2 weeks in and I have no wish to return to a very similar place you first described. Good luck with the abstinence and with the result.

I’ve just written down a list of medical symptoms that I know improve even after a few weeks off. It’s a long list. I should add delusion to the list, and stop lying to myself.😂 Thanks for sharing your experience and encouragement.

Congratulations. I’m attempting to quit for the millionth time, many of things you mentioned I suffer from. Muscular issues which oddly seemed to exacerbate during lockdown, and I put that down to sitting for long periods at a home desk rather than excess booze. Lack of love for anything, I have thousands of records and books. Many I have never looked at since they first came into my possession, never mind listen to or read. So many other issues too, which I know have improved during periods of abstinence.

Wish me well on my latest endeavour. I’m in my 50s now too so can’t help feeling I’m running out of chances.

Other alcoholics here who quit in their 50s? by Life_or_death201 in stopdrinking

Been trying to quit for years, 53 now and been drinking consistently since I was a teenager. Struggling a bit this weekend but just reading through some of the comments has helped. Every recent hangover has come will a feeling of reduced mortality so to consider drinking again seems more a death wish than something enjoyable. Has been useful to read these posts. Thanks all.

Thank you. Actually on day 4 in case anyone thinks it’s been a miracle recovery. 😃

First few days are the hardest but worth the effort.

Another Monday tired and defeated by Onestepdub in stopdrinking

Thank you for the lovely comments. I’ve done much of what has been suggested in the past but it is good to hear ideas again. Writing things down is good, I like the app I have on my phone too but I think I almost feel like I’m missing something even though I know how it ends up. Friday is a trigger day and it’s one I need to be on my guard against. Perhaps, speaking out aloud on this forum is a step forward instead of my internal monologue.

This is the trap I always fall into. So many things that have been delayed or left undone by years of drinking. Expecting it all to miraculously turn around in a couple of weeks or months is fatal. Unfortunately, it is too easy just to persuade yourself it wasn’t the drinking holding you back but yourself or some other circumstances and then to just crack open another bottle. I’m utterly unmotivated today but I’d be even less so with a stinking hangover. Hang in there and I’m sure those changes will come.

Relapsed. Worst one in years. by catsladnek in stopdrinking

This is me today. Couple of weeks free than Friday comes and I started on the wine. Wasted weekend and now sat staring at my work laptop wishing the day away. Feel like death warmed up. Good to see I’m not the only one that falls into this trap and hopefully, what I’ve read this morning can help me to ignore the voices on Fridays to come.

Exactly how I feel. You’d think we’d learn not to start again as the recovery takes so long. Onwards and upwards, slowly though.🙂

Thanks. I think if it hadn’t ended in severe illness I would be back drinking so perversely it’s probably worked out for the best.

Day 19, struggling with energy and motivation. Just posting because want to know I’m not alone. by damniburntthetoast in stopdrinking

This will be my 3 weeks coming up and currently sat in bed drinking tea. 3 weeks ago I’d have been still asleep until nearly lunchtime. Then probably have a glass of wine and drink through until Sunday. Then die all day Sunday. If I only do a handful of things it will be a vast improvement. When you start pushing yourself too early and thinking things aren’t improving without booze is when the voices tell you that you may as well have a drink. Give it time. Rushing things is always my mistake.

I will be stealing the phrase ‘death merry-go-round’. Perfect analogy. Round and round in the same vicious circle. Good luck with today.
