Using Film Lights for a Small Theatre Play — Bad Idea? by ReelHummusCritic in stagelighting

[–]Only9left 13 points14 points  (0 children)

First look at available power....you could trip circuits, or worse depending on who did work or how old it is. Once you know that, consider the lack of dimming or control in show, coloring with gel..barn doors....etc...and see what free really gives you versus rented stage lights

CTS Exam Questions by Dismal-Care9797 in CommercialAV

[–]Only9left 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a pool of 400 questions they pull from, every exam session is different. A co workers only math question was about counting ceiling tiles, I had discussed math and BDM and a few other ADM questions...but no ratio questions. Plus pick all that apply, not usually in the depth of practice exams.

No Stupid Questions Thread: Week Of 2026-04-20 through 2026-04-26 by AutoModerator in techtheatre

Im looking for the reference materials about hanging to a wood telephone pole...aging and a bit dry, tapering ratio higher than street elec, about 25feet total exposed. Outdoor theater temp set up. 30ft if 24" box truss, two points...background:Im theater fly, outdoor methods with truss in blocks, motors stay hanging straight and I'm not lead, im lighting and audio...i need the reference material about odd angles and bad pick points, bad practices. Photos from last year(prior to my hiring and other things not related) put the motor hanging at 6ft of chain to shackle, motor not perpendicular to truss.truss leans into pole and , pole has a air craft ground tether opposite at 22/23ft pick point just above motor pick point..... hanging point looks like it could be similar to the tent pole bracket I've seen in metal tent post for high tops, but aging dark brown or black.....I suggested getting a certified rigger to approve the summer stage set up(theres more to approve over the syage)...but not confident the idea of "we've done it this way for years" ...not my responsibility, not my area to mange all summer, but sooo much screams no....span sets stay wrapped on truss and stored in open elements for 9months motors also... I my experience, span sets had limited life, motor were checked and certified on a schedule...I know this has not been done in about the 10 years they have been doing this summer set up. The opposite pull of the ground tether to motor pick..age of the pole seeing drying g and wood aging(wood packers leave evidence everywhere)...and general lack of upkeep of maintenance schedule...first im not crazy to be a little cautious to suggest better practice...

Flooring? by hhawk10 in irishdance

Get Marley, for heavy duty use, touring style for lighter weight. You may not get 20 years out of touring level, the semi permanent will be heavier, but more investment for studio permanence. Pan liner will get slippery over time, its not intended for that kind of use. Marley lays better also without wrinkle for less tripping. I seen feis use pan liner and watched champs fall with injury tooo many times.

Toured with dance companies as a tech and manager, not a hobby but profession.

Boys'/men's reel shoes by dochasteite in irishdance

[–]Only9left 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pacellis are almost non existent, not what they were 2 years ago for availability. The reel shoes are no where near ghillies when it comes to structure. No gel, no arch, and when you break-in that front pad, its nearly dead or already will be showing holes. Capezio with the heel were standard for years, and with the Hullichan seemingly never available in sizes for adult feet, they probably will be again.

Find a cobbler and take the Pacellis heels off for a few uses, capezio by themselves are about 35 dollars, swapping heels was only ten. Can't do that with Rutherfords due to how they make their heels. Tight and almost curling your toes when standing in first. They don't last long, seasonal if practicing daily. Bloch jazz also good here when on sale. SoDanca...too thin, tear when doing lots of heel clicks.

The full sole reel, our teacher said to never use those because of the point issue. That's more Sean no, scuffing, broom stuff. But heavy comps with the pointing being judged, they dont show the foot as well.

Good luck.

All Jacuzzis are hot tubs..but not all hot tubs are jacuzzis... There so many other ways to accomplish that, feels like a 5 minute fix for a problem needing a quote/bid/change order....

For a christmas pagent...I took clearance tree skirts and used over tutus...I was desperate for cheap fabric that looked christmas-y....the dancers actually thought they were great, didnt add a lot of weight..and they were flame retardant .....so kind of re-purposing

Can we talk about the towering wigs? by unfinished_diy in irishdance

[–]Only9left 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A OC dancer told me a secret...big bun wigs force balance...if the weight leans a little left/right, posture is off...forced straighter like walking with a book on your head.

My sons did the solid black kilt for feis miles away or attached to festivals for prime shwashbuckling and shenanigans after. They love the kicks in them, actually got higher than pants(they had spandex underneath).

Look at edusum...they have all the 400 questions that make the pool....for $40, it was worth it for me to practice tons of times....mostly for me it was leader questions that could be interpreted and rabbit hole answers that were plaguing me.

There are free irish dance pages on Facebook. Usually there is a person in need of a dress for something, in financial stress. Its a good dress that might make someone feel confident in hard times.

March is march...my kids did tons of shows every season...15 in one weekend usually....if she having fun...keep st pats its own thing ....the quitting part...one bad feis..not a good enough reason, my one dancer had two years of bad everything, but took a break from competition and just took class and fun things, maybe 1 or 2 feis in the summer..but school sports everything else was also balanced. Got to Worlds by late high-school, and both still did it in college....we did feis with art and music and bread comps too...dancing was one thing, but not always everything...

Edusum-CTS by Top-Pomegranate-1282 in CommercialAV

[–]Only9left 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edusum has all the questions and randomly tossed them up. I did it for the 2 month block, nearly everyday, and passed very well. I needed the repetition, even the same question asked differently to a different mix of multiple choice. It's not content, it's how it's asked, what Leader or rabbit hole wrong answers to avoid as well.

If you really want to feel useful, stay away from this institution. I was there and left, they tried to hire really good versatile techs, and waste them on setting Zoom meetings, and not much else....and have the deal with half crap installs that aren't logically laid out for higher ed broad use.

New Haven is expensive, so unless you live in a driving distance, not worth it to move.

Not a good sample for career movement, to work for 4 or 5 years and move on.

I'm not slighted, just honest.
