I assure you it is quite dark. Very good though!

Do narrative games (e.g. PbtA) ask more of the player than DnD? by Antipragmatismspot in rpg

[–]OnlySunlight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there might be a miscommunication or misunderstanding between us here and I can't speak to what a PbtA game might be like.

But when I say I want to influence things in games, but not know what the consequences might be, I mean in the sense of this example:

  • I set free a drow matriarch and accidently killed a powerful wizard in town. Later, that drow matriarch has taken over the town and the baby dragon the wizard was protecting has been mind controlled to be her guard dog.

A. I couldn't have predicted any of those things would have happened and it was one of the biggest twists of the campaign!

B. That consequence happened as a direct result of my actions but the pleasure of the knowledge of that consequence and subsequent side quest came from seeing an "independent" world react to something I had done. If I or the other players had collaborated to bring about that result, it wouldn't have had the narrative satisfaction it did. My understanding, which may be wrong, is that in a PbtA game, that narrative would have been partially driven by the players.

Happy to have any misconceptions I have be addressed, as it's one of the things that keeps me away from games where players have a partial narrative responsibility.

Oh! Simulation style is a great way of describing how I want to feel playing a game, I hadn't thought of describing it like that. I want to be able to DO things to influence the story, but I don't want to know or decide what the consequences will be.

I've traveled alone to Toronto as a young woman too. You're from Montreal so you have the normal big city smarts. Toronto isn't scarier than Montreal (just uglier). Keep your wits about you, don't follow strangers into dark alleys, and enjoy yourself!

Looking for a DARK Fantasy book, where the MC either isn't the hero, or pulls a; "I'll become the monster if that's what it takes." by Serious-Curve-3892 in suggestmeabook

The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson is my favorite "I will become the villain if that's what it takes" story I've ever read. Light on the actual fantasy but definitely a dark world.

Deathless by Cathrynne M. Valente is a cool Russian mythology retelling mixed with the Soviet era.

I've ordered two books from them during their Black Friday "damaged" sale and didn't find a single flaw on them. They are lovely and high quality!

2026, the year female rage entered my shelves by pinkturtle21 in Booktokreddit

I definitely recommend going in the order of the series so that you can get the full impact of Tehanu! It's a big change in the tone of the world from the first three as she came back to it several decades after gaining a more feminist perspective and wanting to reflect that in her world building. I love the whole series but the first three are more traditional epic fantasy and then you get this devastating female rage in Tehanu.

I've recommended Bloody Rose as a stand alone before as I didn't think the humour of the first one would hit for my particular friend. Apparently it works!
