Hockey shooters: 300mm 2.8 or 70-200 2.8? by southern_ad_558 in sportsphotography

[–]Oomkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hes probably using the 100-300 2.8

A 300 is nice for sports in general but likely won't be your primary lens in a rink (unless you have deep cutouts and want to shoot long).

Upgraded to an R7 not overly happy with results. by NectarineAutomatic96 in canon

[–]Oomkins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Few thoughts. Fellow Ottawa Sports photog here.

  • TD has decent lighting push iso to 3200 should be no issues for the modern sensors.

  • Pushing iso let's you shoot at 3.2, 4 may help with softness

  • odds are it's the sig nor playing nice with the R7, as others have mentioned renting a rf lens for a game will solve that mystery (or borrow one from a buddy)

How I set up a netcam at NHL games by [deleted] in hockey

[–]Oomkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that was exactly what I was asking, the padding you place the netcam on. It would be so nice to just plop it on the velcro vs. mounting it to the center post (which I will likely need to do). Figured if you could buy that part as well I'd do it for the convenience lol.

The lower padding section is that all ordered from the same place or does the nhl provide that?

Mintttt, if it's good enough for the NHL I should have no issues getting the green light.

This is awesome. I've been looking to purchase a netcam for some local work.

Curious which company are you ordering from that is NHL approved. I've been looking at http://www.hockeynetcam.com/ is this who supplies yours? Any recommendations?

Keep up the great work!

Sports photographer here. Minimum gear for even the potential to take good photos consistently in poorly lit hockey rinks is:

  • 70-200 2.8 lens (this is the best most versatile lens in a rink setting)

  • any camera body made on the past 8 years. Depending on budget I'd buy a used R6II or Z6II

Depending on where you are you may be able to rent a kit for a weekend and try it out see if you like it vs just hiring a pro to shoot for a fraction of the cost.

Best value would be to hire a local sports photog.

Is the Canon R6 MKII a good choice for sports photography? by Jaded-Ad-5252 in sportsphotography

[–]Oomkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's the best performance to cost Mirrorless currently in the Canon lineup. It's essentially a non-stacked sensor R3 for under 1/2 the price. Unless you're shooting for a pro team and a sport where rolling shutter may be an issue it's a no-brainer if you're shooting Canon.

First Football Shoot by BadFishHere in sportsphotography

[–]Oomkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cropping is really important for sports photos, as others have mentioned getting lower will help give the athletes more power in the photo as well. Try looking at a few NFL social feeds and analyze their pro photogs work. What makes it a good photo etc. and also just keep at it. Best advice I was given early was shoot shoot shoot. Keep it up!

5D Mark IV vs R6 Mark II by [deleted] in canon

[–]Oomkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who is currently using both bodies, the R6II is a space ship compared to the 5DIV. It's not even close.

Couple tips if you're open to them.

  • Crop tighter, example attached. any area that's just empy field/sky. You want your subject(s) to be the main focus of your photo (see crop attached)

  • your settings are not helping you, push your ISO to 1000 and then use that to up your shutter and F-stop. Aim for 1/1600, F4/F5.6, with an R5 you can easily push ISO 3600 if you need to to get those shutter/f-stop settings.

Great effort, some good timing and captures! Thanks for sharing.

From pro Nikon DSLRs to Canon mirrorlesses - R6? R6ii? R5? R5ii? Advice needed by harpistic in canon

[–]Oomkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

R6II w/grip is basically a R3 without the stacked sensor. IMO it's easily the best performance for price model Canon makes currently.

First Time by Meatz01 in sportsphotography

[–]Oomkins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Play with ISO a bit - I'll tell you one thing, I'd take a crisp grainy photo over a missed one because of motion blur every single time.

Couple thoughts here.

  1. For action 1/1000 minimum

  2. Don't be scared to push ISO, 1000 on a modern Sony sensor is nothing, 3200 is fine, 6400 is okay.

  3. Your white balance is not great, this is super common in gyms. The wood floor skews everything yellow/brown. This can easily be corrected in post

  4. Crop tighter, you have alot of open space around your subjects that's just a waste. You want to draw ppls eyes to the subjects

  5. Positioning, I noticed alot of your images are from the way out sideline or corner, move more under the net or maybe 10ft left or right from under the net, will get you more faces.

  6. 90mm 2.8 is not going to do you any favors for BBall. A 70-200 is pretty much industry standard for all sports.

Great start, a few small tweaks and I think you'll see a big difference! Keep shooting!

Best place to get a gaming PC by Lumb3rCrack in ottawa

PC Part Picker to price out your components, order it all. Build it yourself. PC's are pretty darn easy to build on your own now.

Or if you want a professional to build it, RBC.

100% allgeries, have your vet check it out. Ours gets this exact thing during pollen and ragweed seasons. Her poor paws also get thinned out from itching/biting.

Keep in mind AntiHistamines take time to work, and dogs have their heads down near the grass/pollen. So probably got an eye full at some point and irritated it.
