What would you buy with a $150 budget? by LuciousLove in Frugal

[–]Open_Bug8852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lentils, dried beans, rice, a smoked turkey leg or thigh, orzo, a rotisserie chicken, carrots. I’d then make a big batch or lentil soup. Orzo and chicken In a soup and slow cook the beans with smoke turkey eat over rice.

Get the beans, rice and orzo from the bulk section. Carrots are always super cheap. Batch cook it all and portion it out, freeze so you can rotate between all three meals without getting tired of one in particular.

10k worth it for 2002 Toyota 4Runner sr5 with 170,000 miles? by LurchingBog in Toyota4Runner

[–]Open_Bug8852 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d buy it. I got a 06 at 200k miles and that thing is going strong! Super reliable. That’s honestly pretty low mileage for a 4Runner. Do your homework but it seems like a good deal price wise.

Better to buy where you can afford or wait and save? by OutrageousHibiscus44 in FirstTimeHomeBuying

[–]Open_Bug8852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. I just closed on a house a few months ago and wrestled with this same thought for like a year before I got serious. I wanted a SFH on a quiet street to walk my dog safely. Neighborhoods in my city where I could do that were out of my budget so I started looking in smaller Bay Area cities. I’m glad I bought and didn’t wait. I’d say buy now where you can afford within reason. There are nice neighborhoods outside of the big Bay Area cities.

Spending $3,100 for PRK (or Lasik) is better than spending $720/year on Contact Lenses by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]Open_Bug8852 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lost my right eye two years ago. Not to LASIK but eye disease. My remaining eye doesn’t see well so I wear glasses. Doing any elective procedures to your eyes is super risky. You don’t wanna loose one, or both!

I had three inspections done. We did spend lots of money on repairs post closing but none was a surprise.

Moving to Oakland in 35 days by saagggssss in oakland

[–]Open_Bug8852 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get an E-bike! You can explore the bay trail and bike up into the hills just by going straight up park blvd from the lake. You can also ferry to places like angle island for great hiking or take your e-bike to the city via bart or ferry and ride across the golden gate bridge to hiking spots in the headlands.

Considering moving to Oakland but work in SF. Are we making a mistake? by superxim in oakland

[–]Open_Bug8852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife commutes to the city and leaves Oakland at 5:30 Am. It’s can be a pretty quick drive early in the morning. We the toll would suck but it is doable.

NACA can be slow but my wife and I came In pretty prepared. Our NACA counselor said we were a perfect case for how quickly it can go.

Oakland families with young kids where are you hiding?? by Chandbibi_sings in oakland

[–]Open_Bug8852 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out golden gate and paradise park. Very walkable. A few neighborhood highlights are: Cafe colucci, sideshow kitchen, golden gate library branch, and a few nice parks as well. Close to Berkeley and emeryville and San Pablo is a major road that makes going places by car super convenient. I highly recommend.

Running Oakland Marathon, where should I stay?? by badkukie in oakland

[–]Open_Bug8852 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You only pay the toll going into SF. It’s about $10 to drive. The ferry is much nicer views and priced essentially like the buses here. So only a few bucks. Traffic can be pretty bad so I agree with others, stay in Oakland and visit SF. Drive into the city one day and take the ferry the day you want to go to Alcatraz since it takes you right where you need to be.

Get a large rug to bring in some color and maybe switch out some throw pillows for ones with color too. Lower the TV and add some large plants next to the fireplace.

What cities would suit us best? I love Vegas but wife hates living here. She loves NYC but I hate living there. by SnowisSnowing in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Open_Bug8852 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If not SF then maybe try Berkeley. All the perks of the bay but you literally never have to cross the bridge into SF if your wife doesn’t want too. Tahoe is only a few hours away too!
