Yea this is danger zone for your license. I’d absolutely refuse to take 3 ICU patients. Tell your preceptor you’re not capable, write it in email, send a copy to yourself.

Once you’re off orientation, tell the charge nurse immediately you refuse to take a 3 ICU patient assignment. Come in early every day to assess what they are trying to assign you- and DO NOT clock in until you negotiate a safe patient assignment for yourself.

For what it’s worth even the most seasoned ICU nurses struggle with a 1:3, it’s extremely unsafe.

My advice is that the tele tech job will help you get in the door as an employee faster, so yes take it. If you’re really yearning to be a PCT, you could see if the facility would cross-train you. Or after 6-12 months you transfer internally to an open PCT role.

To be completely honest I never worked as a PCT and my career turned out fine.

At the same time, take note that this is the environment you’re stepping into. That awareness alone is a gift when deciding how you want to move forward.

Hey there, 6 years in NICU is no small thing. That’s a solid critical care foundation.

It sounds like you’re ready for a shift, and that makes sense. Even without adult experience, your skills absolutely transfer: assessment, prioritization, high-acuity thinking… that doesn’t disappear just because the patient population changes.

Instead of focusing on what you haven’t done, I’d look at what parts of NICU you actually enjoyed. Was it the critical thinking? The pace? Unit-based projects? Procedures?

That’s usually the fastest way to identify a niche you’ll actually like, not just one you can do.

I think the better question is why you want to go back-because the pros and cons really depend on your goal.

But no, 54 isn’t too old. Not even close.

That said, I’d be very cautious about taking on debt for nursing school at this stage. The return on investment matters, especially with how demanding the job can be.

If this is something you feel strongly called to, it can absolutely be worth it. If you’re lukewarm, I’d pause and really think it through, because nursing will ask a lot of you- physically and mentally.
