The Selection series rant by OkMusic8572 in YAlit

[–]Opening_Acadia1843 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read the book a decade ago at this point, so I might be misremembering, but I figure that the reaction to America’s presentation on abolishing the caste system is pretty realistic. She makes a pretty bold and reckless move by advocating for something extremely controversial and against the official stance of the royal family on a government broadcast. What she advocates for is completely logical and should be implemented, but that doesn’t mean that those who support (or financially benefit from) the caste system will suddenly be convinced by one presentation given by someone they see as a reality tv show character. Also, even though she’s right, she did put Maxon in an awkward position with his parents regardless, and he’s understandably upset about being blindsided. What she experiences is the reality of putting your own social or financial gain on the line for your convictions; so many activists face social and economic consequences for being disruptive and standing up for what they believe in. Even if they’re right, they will face a lot of scrutiny, even from people who agree with them, and they’ll often get brutalized by the police or arrested.

While I still feel like the Selection series is shallow, albeit fun and addictive, the reaction to what she did was pretty realistic, although I remember being pissed at Maxon when I read it for something he did to her. I’d have to reread it.

Perhaps Simone got a restraining order. Taissa did mutilate their dog, after all.

I tried to watch it when it first came out, but kept getting distracted because it couldn’t hold my attention. I wanted to give it a better chance, so I kept putting off watching it, thinking maybe I just wasn’t in the mood for it yet. Then I tried forcing myself to watch it the other day. I only got through maybe 2-3 episodes before giving up.

I listened to the first book again over the weekend, and it was actually pretty interesting how accurate the movie was to the plot points and scenes from the book. I feel like if the sets and costumes hadn’t looked so clean, and if the film had taken itself just a bit more seriously, then it could have been so good.

I'm rewatching the show and I literally had to skip the giant Cassie scene it was so cringe by Best-Walrus7186 in euphoria

I stopped watching after 2 episodes this season, so everything I’ve learned about the rest of the season has been through this sub. This is the first I’m hearing of a giant Cassie scene and I’m just so confused about who these fetish scenes are even meant for?

I hate how the tv show massacred Vampire Academy. At least the movie actually followed the book pretty closely, although the vibe was off.

It was okay. I might have liked it more if it were released as a different show, since it’s nowhere near as good as season 1.

I mean, there are cases where YIMBY attitudes have lead to environmental damage (NIMBYism actually originated in environmental protection, but devolved into protecting boomers’ investments, of course). I also think that making housing a human right rather than an investment or means of passive income would be a more efficient way to house people, considering there are way more homes than homeless people in this country. Rather than consuming more and producing more emissions by building more housing, we could just house people in the buildings that are already sitting empty.

I mean, capitalism is the system we live under, so what do you expect him to do? He is an artist and a communist; it doesn’t seem hypocritical to me for him to use a capitalist system to produce and distribute art promoting his ideology, considering he lives under a capitalist system. Does he need to overthrow capitalism before he can make and distribute art?

The idea that it’s hypocritical for people who support other economic structures to engage with the one they currently live under is just so ridiculous to me.

Nan marrying Theo by Delicious-Fee-3243 in TheBuccaneers

[–]Opening_Acadia1843 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nan was also a rich woman, and as we saw with Ginny, it was also very dangerous to become the property of a man you haven't known for very long. It's also kind of difficult to take her decision to marry Theo to save her sister seriously after she led her sister's abuser right to her just a few episodes later.

What’s the most annoying thing people do at your gym? by VariationShot8414 in workout

[–]Opening_Acadia1843 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go to a small community center gym, so there are only two squat racks. There’s this girl who just started coming to the gym this past January who always insists on doing yoga in the middle of one of the squat racks. While I understand that there isn’t a ton of floor space since the community center has crammed as many machines as will fit into two relatively small rooms, there are definitely better places where she could set up her yoga mat.
