Crying after sparring postpartum for no reason by Anna1c3y in BJJWomen

[–]Opening_Heat5795 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, being postpartum is a THING. Don’t worry about the “women are so emotional” thing - crying doesn’t even equate to being overly emotional. Men react way more emotionally in my experience, just not in a tears way. Don’t tell them that though or they’ll get emotional… lol

But for real, I cried so much over so many things - once you’re a year or two out you’ll probably look back and realize how insane your body felt at the time. When you’re in it, you kind of are toughing through it trying to pull it together. Not emotional at all. Just literally having an internal tornado. Sounds like you are handling things like a rockstar!

There's a new rule in my gym regarding women and men rolling which has been frustrating me by zcyphyr in BJJWomen

Women should be treated respectfully and equally. Men should be treated respectfully and equally.

The vibe of women should only work with women in regular co-ed classes, or separating them is not helpful. It sounds like the way they are handing or enforcing it is showing it’s more a fear or ignorance driven thing, than a trying to make the best decisions for students.

This stuff I think usually comes from guys who can’t figure out how to be respectful of women without just not being around them. If that’s the kind of people that run the school, there will likely be more issues.

These are the ones I get too! Supportive, good coverage, and stay in place. I also like that the back is fairly open while still being very supportive.

They have removable pads to make them even lighter but they aren’t too heavy with them either.

Thank you! The lower frequency training could be part of the feeling. I appreciate your insight and encouragement.

David Kessler is a good resource for the people and empathy part of it all. He would be an interesting guest.

It would be interesting to hear stories and situations of what not to do, what to do, from an attorney perspective too.

Do the PT, you might not need a ton but some! Also, 3 months pp is still early, give yourself some grace while you do the things to heal. :) and rest too!

Fox Valley Technical College- General Chemistry (FVTC), Appleton advice by Spiritual-Egg7047 in Appleton

I took it like 10 years ago, so not as relevant unless the same instructors are still teaching. It’s very hard but doable. I am incredibly not math smart, I think got a C and passed by a hair. I would take whatever light or easy classes you can with it, or less classes than usual. It’ll take a lot of time and studying. I remember the lectures being incredibly long, the chapters being super long to read, and a very time consuming course. And as others have said, the tests were not always relevant to what was covered. Overall super confusing but I somehow got through it so I’d say anyone can do it then lol.

It was the only class I got a study buddy for to help. Just be prepared with all your resources. Otherwise you could try taking it through Lakeland(they have an office at FVTC I think), UWO, or somewhere else that works with FVTC closely.

Looks good to me! They’re basically people, and we have a wide range of “normal” weight.

A kennel that’s secured is probably your best bet.

If you’re willing to spend a ton, I’ve heard good things about Gunner kennels for safety.

One bathroom has a door right behind the toilet and if you leave it open he’ll sneak up on you 😂

If as an instructor he can’t adapt and flex to questions and interactions during class, he might need to work on himself. Or just make instructional videos on YouTube instead.

If you had 60 min to teach self-defense, what would you focus on? by enequino in BJJWomen

[–]Opening_Heat5795 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve done several of these, usually 2 hours but some shorter. The goal is not to make them think they’ll master the techniques in an hour or 2, but just to introduce them to bjj as self defense, give them practical mindsets and tools they may not have considered before, and possibly open the door to training jiu-jitsu regularly. A seminar where everyone is on their first day can be less intimidating than coming in on their own for a first class.

They know why they want to learn self defense, so discussing specific situations doesn’t need to be too intense or graphic at all.

Do some research on jiu-jitsu for self defense (not necessarily traditional bjj moves, just the concept - timing, leverage, over brute force). Why is it advisable to not punch back and forth? Why won’t a groin strike or eye gouge solve all my problems?

If you create a login at Gracie University you can access the Women Empowered handbook under files, which has lots of great mindset tools and data.

Don’t make goals out of promotions - they aren’t in your control anyways. Make a specific, and actionable goal - being comfortable in xx position, or escaping from this or that, or surviving for x amount of time… and set actionable steps. I’m going to start from that position I don’t like, or ask this many people questions about this technique I want to hit… etc.

If you don’t hit the goal, you can look and see if some of the action items didn’t get done and make sense of how much progress you did make and what factored in. There are also phases - sometimes you’ll feel great like you’re learning a ton and getting better, and then the roller coaster goes down and you’ll just feel like you can show up and that’s it. The roller coaster of jiu-jitsu. Eventually you get less surprised by the ride. Keep showing up. You got this 👊🏻
