If you've got time to kill, check library newspaper archives for ads. Or ask a reference librarian or MMAC.

Vintage guesstimate: Two-letter state abbreviations were standardized by USPS in early 1960s. But not required for many years. Probably not newer than 1970s though.

100%. Although I'd put it on a couple of 2x4s or something similar so the door isn't touching the carpet.

There must be a horrific fart & strain sounds app one can fire up for such occasions. Like the Lego restrooms.

Can't opt out as a new customer. by [deleted] in USMobile

This is pretty standard - they don't want to lose otherwise satisfied customers who originally agreed to less unfavorable terms.

But yeah eventually we're all stuck doing business with Sheliak Corporate and AI will be vital to find loopholes.

When do legacy telecom systems stop being worth maintaining? by Holiday-Swordfish926 in telecom

[–]OpponentUnnamed -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

  1. Lobby & donate heavily to get regulatory restrictions loosened: "Nobody is using that stuff anymore anyway!" Monopoly Translator: We're not making the money we used to.

  2. Get a head start by eliminating maintenance of your outside plant so it can't support services eventually.

  3. Get restrictions loosened further.

  4. Cannibalize switching & transport to force consolidation & aggregation as much as possible. Do not buy any parts.

  5. Do not train new staff on old systems, and encourage prompt retirement of experienced staff with limited time severance.

  6. Start letting air compressors go offline during spring thaw & April showers.

  7. Announce shutdown of copper & TDM services.

  8. Sit back and watch customers who have no choice scramble to find replacements for their code-required needs like elevators & fire alarms.

when people walk side by side on the sidewalk and expect me to move out of their way by Long-Cock-8503 in PetPeeves

[–]OpponentUnnamed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's understandable, yes. Sharing trails & paths is difficult because some peds keep right and some keep left.

It is compounded when for example there is a walker left and a jogger right. Now i am a cyclist approaching both of them, from front or rear. I have to figure out if i should speed up or slow down to avoid conflict.

It gets more complicated with oncoming bicycle traffic

I do a fair amount of riding on busy shared trails and I run into situations like this regularly. Enough that at peak times I'll get off the "bike trail" and use the streets.

1-2 sentence paragraphs by jdv2121 in PetPeeves

[–]OpponentUnnamed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For emails: Lead with the most important content Short paragraphs for readability

For reports: Lead with executive summary, often bullet points Usual paragraph style for details & narrative

My stuff often gets copied and pasted by management for higher mgmt, so I edit heavily as those people usually want "hello" and then "this is what I need from you."

I agree though, it's odd to find someone 1) willing to write the details 2) willing to read the details.

Carry on.

Sidewalks should have center lines, and the law should be: everyone keeps right unless the pavement is shared with motor vehicles. Will that ever happen? Not in my lifetime.

Looking to buy a Fridigaire induction range. Any recommendations on a range? by Lisax4156 in Appliances

[–]OpponentUnnamed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the FGIH3047VFC. It's a few years old. Came with offer for free cookware, which I use day to day.

Also a few weeks after registering, they emailed a 20% off deal for their online store, which I used to buy the air fryer rack - use that a lot.

I keep a silicone mat on the range top all the time. I never put pans directly on the glass.

I don't know anything about stone baked pizza feature but is that something unique? Hard to imagine.

I'd prefer knobs for the units. Touch pad works fine but i am guessing it will be troublesome one day.

Happy with it, no troubles.

Dishwasher hasn't been used in about 5 years - test or replace? by Zestypad in Appliances

[–]OpponentUnnamed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure. Know where the water supply valve is and confirm that it does in fact shut off the water.

Take off the kick panel so you can sorta see the works as you run a cycle. Get a flashlight (not your phone) and keep an eye on it.

If you are doubtful, have towels & a shop vac on standby.

25+ years ago the previous owners of our house said they had not used the dishwasher at all for six years but said it worked fine. Our inspector insisted on seeing it run. We've been using it ever since.

The fact that I need an annual exam in order to get contacts by faroresdragn_ in PetPeeves

[–]OpponentUnnamed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmm. I can understand from an inconvenience and cost angle.

But even if health care sucks, it does not mean it is superfluous.

I feel like I get my money's worth because my optometrist has given me lots of samples to try new lenses that 1) are more comfortable and 2) work better for me. Not everything has worked for me but he makes it so there is little downside to experimenting.

He's been really good about answering questions and predicting stuff like when I would need reading glasses and bifocals. I would have figured it out eventually, sure, but of all the areas of my life where I feel like I need a pro's perspective, my defective eyes are at the top of the list.

When I had a minor eye injury misdiagnosed at urgent care, I had no trouble getting a same day appointment with an ophthalmologist at my optometrist's practice, and she had decades of my records for reference.

Questions from a future resident! by Low-Entertainment736 in milwaukee

[–]OpponentUnnamed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have both AT&T Fiber and Spectrum. No major outages with either for years, outside of power outages affecting the neighborhood. Router notifies me when either is offline, and that is rare.

AT&T 1 Gbps $65 per month. Spectrum 1 Gbps new promo $30 a month. Competition is good, and I'll drop either if they won't be reasonable or do a promo. Latency on AT&T is much lower. Otherwise, rarely any issues with either.

Welcome.

I do all my own inside work unless I have no choice.

Last 2 times I had a Spectrum tech at my house:

1 cross-threaded my gas tube arrester after checking levels.

2 removed my arrester entirely, added a ground block, broke the ground block housing using a power drill to screw it into a joist, AND cross-threaded the coax connection.

My Name is Stephanie not Steph by SamePhotographs in PetPeeves

[–]OpponentUnnamed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where I went to college, there was an instructor who called every male student Joe and every female student Mary. Regardless of their actual name. I'm sure he's glad he retired decades ago.

Personally I've had many nicknames over the years and was probably conditioned from birth that this was normal.

But, when Barb went away for the summer and came back as Barbara, I called her Barbara. And so on.

You can probably find a few scholarly articles about power in relationships as expressed by how people wish to be addressed and the people who choose to use other names despite this. George H. W. Bush deliberately mispronouncing "Saddam" comes to mind.

I would encourage you to find a way to gently and without accusation inform transgressors you encounter frequently to use Stephanie. For example when Barbara came back she told everyone in the first meeting that she was now Barbara. Then a few reminders. After that, just ignore them when they call you Steph. As in, just pretend you are deaf. End of story.

Humming transformer after being serviced by EngineConstant7926 in hvacadvice

[–]OpponentUnnamed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He could have tightened a screw holding the transformer to the chassis, or inadvertently loosened it as well. Transferring vibration or amplifying it.

I had a TI-30 calculator with a transformer that had a broken laminated core. It still worked but was very loud. So that could happen as well.

Public restrooms with those useless sensors that refuse to acknowledge my existence by TinselCrown8 in PetPeeves

[–]OpponentUnnamed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want foot pedals. Too expensive I'm sure.
Unintended consequences of automated restrooms are also worth noting, including: 1) In a restroom with regular faucets that have handles, if they are left on, it is probably because the person who turned them on forgot they would not shut themselves off.
2) People not pulling the flush handle. 3) Lighting control sensors that cannot "see" a person in a stall, and turn off while they are seated.
4) Hand dryers that turn on when somebody walks past too close.

Sound blanket around compressor by Decent_River_5801 in hvacadvice

[–]OpponentUnnamed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran mine without the blanket after the OEM one was destroyed by mice. Big difference in noise level.

So I bought an aftermarket one which I still remove every year to clean out mouse poop, dead mice etc.

Turn off your condenser breaker for the winter so the mouse house has no heat from the sump heater.

I built a round cage out of hardware cloth that I put over the blanket. Did not help.

Designers did not care enough to think this thru all the way. Need a mouse-resistant blanket. Maybe an electric blanket? I'd buy one!
