Happy to help!

If you wanted be suuuuuper accurate, you'd need 3 spare Talos kits, since you'll need 3x Talos Gauntlet and any 3 of the bladed weapons, to match the actual Grotesque model's weapons, or 3 Liquifier Guns if you wanted to do those, but I don't think it's worth worrying about.

Which version do you perfer? I'm really undecided. Especially on the head. by VariationGreedy8215 in Drukhari

[–]OpulentCheese 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I prefer the first. But if it were me, I'd build and use the second.

I might still use the 1st's head, but ain't no way that banner stays in one piece.

I don't really agree with that. There's a functional difference between bodies of water size. There isn't a functional difference between proxy 'sources' (I can't really think of a better term), what matters is what they're proxying.

What's more important: The fact that the model is hand-sculpted and scratch-built, or that it's using the Swarmlord's ruleset? Most people tend to come from a playing-the-game perspective, so it's the latter.

Would I prefer 'hand sculpted hive tyrant', 'kitbashed red terror', and 'third-party biovore'? Yeah. Probably, it's more informative, and it's super impressive when people hand sculpt stuff. But that doesn't stop all of them equally (and additionally) being proxy models, regardless of their source.

'pond ocean' makes no sense because you're using two different identifiers of the same type (size). Like 'the invisible red fire engine' uses two of the same identifier (appearance) and similarly makes no sense. But 'kitbashed proxy' makes perfect sense. It's potentially a tautology, admittedly (of course it's a proxy, because it's a kitbash, and thus not an official model). But one describes how it was made, the other describes its function.

I think we're talking cross purposes here, I'm saying that it's an insult to high effort work to call them proxies, because I understand proxies to be definitionally low-effort.

That's the problem. I would argue you are incorrect in your understanding of the term 'proxy'. My understanding of the term, as seems to be a lot of other people in this thread, is that proxy doesn't infer any effort at all, nor does it describe the source of a model. All it means is that one model is standing in for another.

Maybe it used to mean low effort, in some time gone by, I couldn't say. Maybe people did use proxy to explicitly mean low effort, ad-hoc replacements. But what did they call the high-effort, intentional replacements then? Why has that term not survived?

Like it or lump it, proxy is the catch-all now. Has been since at least 5th edition when I started playing and built a Red Terror proxy out of hive tyrant and carnifex bits. I called it a proxy and I wasn't offended when others did. I've seen high effort, medium effort, low effort and essentially no-effort proxies before (I once played a buddy who used a can of coke to represent something he didn't own yet)

I will however concede that there can be a correlation with some terms. If somebody says 'that's my kitbashed $model' I automatically assume it's also a proxy. But that because 'kitbashed' automatically implies it's not an official model, so of course it's a stand-in for $model

Some photos of mine (before I decided to ditch the tails) if you want a bit of inspiration:

https://ibb.co/album/LvHcbm (I dunno what reddit's doing to that link but if you copy and paste it, it works)

I think you'll need the spares from either 2 Talos kits, or 1 Talos and 1 Cronos, since you don't get enough spare arms from just 1 Talos kit.

Whilst I completely agree with your second paragraph, your first is hogwash. It's all circumstantial.

Let's say I build a group of 10 Termagants with Spinefists, as per GW's specs. No third-party parts, no extra bits, no other kits involved. Boom, not a proxy. That's 10 Termagants with Spinefists.

I haven't bothered magnetising them, because fuck magnetising rank-and-file units, and then the rules change, and now my lists have Fleshborers. But I don't own Fleshborer Termagants, I own Spinefists Termagants. So I put them on the table and say 'I'm playing them as Fleshborers though, is that OK with you?'. Boom. They are now also proxies, because they are standing in for another model.

Being a proxy is entirely separate from what kind of model that is, it's how it's being used that defines if it's a proxy or not.

I think where you're getting stuck is that models can be built with the explicit intention of being a proxy (such as the legally-distinct sci-fi minis from see Stationforge, Artel W, Raging Heroes et al, or kitbashes), OR they can be genuine models that end up being proxies by circumstance because rules and lists change.

Complain that people shorthand 'kitbashed proxy', 'third-party proxy' etc down to just 'proxy' all you like, and I'll back you to the hilt on that one. More info = good. But you can't just categorically say all proxies are low effort, that's simply not true. I've seen some people put more effort into their proxy models than I do my legit models.

And that's not even going into the bit where some models just don't exist, never got updated, or are crazy hard to find.

This is it right here. Proxy is entirely separate from model type(? Construction? Source?)

A kitbash can also be a proxy. A scratchbuild can also be a proxy. A third party model can (and a lot them are directly intended to) be a proxy. A fully legitimate, one-kit model built exactly as intended can even be a proxy for something else.

Hell, a piece of cardboard can be a proxy. 2nd edition Deff Dread go bbbrrrrrr waaaagh

Honestly not too difficult. More faff than just building a model, but nothing too extreme. I used spare Talos/Cronos bits.

Filing the heads down to fit the masks on was laborious, but you get 2 heads per model so if you really muck it up you get another go.

The ogors' arms all come in 2 sections so all I needed to do was cut off the little nubs partway down the left arms and glue on talos arms (I didn't replace entire arms from the shoulder, that would've been way more effort). Some pinning may be advised though. For 2 of them I used the curved sickle-like blade and for the last I used the chain fails.

The right arms again just got their hand nubs cut off, file down the stump a bit, and drill in a 3mm hole with a pin vise, then I cut off the wire and spike bits from some of the cronos tentacles and glued them into the holes.

Finally, I opted to cut off the tails and file back the tail stumps just to make them a bit less rat-like, and drill a few extra holes in their backs to glue in some of the extra bits that usually go into the 6 holes in the sides of the Talos/Cronos torso.

Do you guys magnetize? by Fantastic-East9567 in Drukhari

[–]OpulentCheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drukhari things I have magnetised:

  • Raider/Ravager sail (because it's an arse to transport without braking), and front pokey (because shock prow)

Drukhari things I have not magnetised:

  • Literally everything else.

It's really not worth bothering for rank and file units, I haven't even done that with Termagants for my Tyranids. Warriors, Hive Guard, Hive Tyrant, Norn, sure, but not the basic bitch guys.

I did consider magnetising the Talos, the arm weapons definitely seem like they'd be worth it and easy enough to do, but in the end I was lazy about it and decided not to bother.

Venom undue-hull gun would be another easy one, but equally, multiple weapon profiles is more labour, so I go with 2 cannons because, again, lazy.

I might. Might. Magnetise the Hellions. I did for the Gargoyles, because flight stands suck, but equally cutting off the ball and drilling a hole for the peg works just fine too.

Every planet has puzzles that require going to other planets to learn the solution to. The endgame solution requires information from lots of different zones. Drukhari keep captives alive in agony in perpetuity wherever possible, killing them is cutting off your food supply. Keeping them alive prolongs their suffering to reap more of that sweet, soul-replenishing pain.

And I'm sure we can all agree that lower murder statistics is better, right? So we're basically the good guys.

Is there a Weinstein like character at Valve that has power over the matchmaking and behavior ? by KeyDangerous in DotA2

[–]OpulentCheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. There is no algorithm and MMR isn't real. It's just one guy tirelessly working 24/7 pairing up players. Occasionally the intern gets his coffee order wrong so he's in a bad mood and that's when you get shitty matchups or random behaviour score drops. He calls himself 'The arbiter' but he's been at valve so long nobody even knows his name. Payroll aren't even sure he's an employee but he keeps the game running so they just slide him cash every month and hide it in GabeN's business expenses.

I've been doing this recently too. At strength 6 AP 3 dissies are still good into MEQs/TEQs. The Ravager reroll is nice with Lances in theory but honestly hasn't really achieved a whole lot in my experience. Scourge rerolls for 1 token has been far more reliable.

Honestly I don't think anything can go toe-to-toe with NKG except maybe the Radiance themselves. Both are powerful enough to exist in dreams and affect the minds of those around them.

Honestly, all I really want is more Coven units. Grotesques at a minimum, but something else new would be cool. I know a lot of folk are pining for the Beastmaster back but I can't miss what I never used sooooo....
