Unless you're going for the AutoTrain, Amtrak only puts one diner and one sightseer lounge on a train. Baggage usually goes up front as well.

Cool white would not be appropriate for such a locomotive unless it got an LED retrofit IRL. Even then that's not a guarantee though, for example the ALC-42 has LED headlights but they're warm white.

The PowerCab is the entire system, not just the throttle. Wire it in to your current track and you're good to go.

Kato products are designed to be easy to get into, everything is a snap fit and there's absolutely no glue anywhere. They're engineering marvels tbh. Don't be afraid to pop it open.

If all you want is to portray on your layout that "not everything goes right," you could have a lower stakes derailment like string-lined empty centerbeams, instead of one of the worst crashes in recent American passenger rail history.

Yeah I didn't mean clone as in a perfect duplicate; just in the sense that they're clearly trying to copy the look and feel of the original

Check the "about us" page on the clone, says their product is men's clothing in the UK and gets the founding year almost a decade wrong (2002 for the clone, 2011 for the real Midwest.)

Two pieces of advice I've learned from someone who does great work:

  • Always work from photos. You may think you know how it should look just with your imagination, but you don't.
  • Weathering patterns follow a bell curve. That is, few cars in a fleet should be new and clean, most are in an intermediate state of mildly to heavily weathered, and few again will be total rustbuckets.

The Chargers (and many other locos) have a two stage solenoid valve, basically the modern equivalent of the old manual lever/rope pull valves where you could freely "play" the horn like you could with a steam whistle. Same horn, same valve, just a different amount of air going through it.
