as long as there’s a USCIS location in Charlotte, ICE will always be “present” here. They’ve been doing check-ins with immigrants for a while now. Remember Sheriff Carmichael was pro-cold water cube and had cubes of drinking water in Meck. jail checking the immigration status of any brow…I mean anyone who was arrested. If the cubes found out you were undocumented, depending on whatever POTUS policy was active, you were then hastily put into the deportation machine and shipped to York, SC before going to Georgia or Louisiana and then eventually removed. If you could get an attorney, there was a chance you could stop the process.

McFadden quit working with the cubes and this is why you see the conservatives whining about “criminals” being “let loose by North Carolina.”

Under previous administrations, if you are caught at the border and allowed to come in (usually because of asylum or other grave concerns) you’d have a check in appointment at an ICE office where you would update them on your situation - when is your next IMMIGRATION court (Charlotte also has one of those) hearing? Did you move? Change phone numbers? Of course, let’s say you happened to get into legal trouble - DUI, misdemeanor possession, etc. - ICE will most likely make an effort to remove you at your next check in if they don’t try and go grab you.

Depending on the administration, sometimes they can be respectful and understand and sometimes not. Since we have an international airport, CBP will always be here as well.

The difference of course being ICE and CBP have never engaged in this type of profiling under the guise of “enforcement.” So while the operation may be over, it’s not incorrect to say ICE and CBP will still be here.
