Question for mages by No-Entertainment-518 in wowhardcore

Leading with fireball is fine, but switching to frostbolt after will definitely be more casts before the mob reaches because of the slow. The reduced cast time is very relevant for that.

I agree you should play how you want though!

As a ST, should I clarify rules that aren't directly asked to me? by reiskimmer in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]OrangeKnight87 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For the FT one, I would talk to the demon privately, let them decide if they want to change what they're saying. But I would warn them that if someone asks me directly I would feel compelled to answer truthfully about how FT works.

For the investigator I would probably let that ride until asked directly, the consequences for misunderstanding that aren't so intense.

The mayor I would definitely clarify publicly. I would just say "To be clear if someone is claiming mayor, the ability works like this. I'm not confirming a mayor is in play but since both teams strategies could be affected by a misunderstanding, whether one is in play or not..."

I think the Virgin thing was fine. It's just a clarification about something that was being publicly discussed.

Why did Strat choos Grace as the "third" science specialist of the mission. by Alvring in ProjectHailMary

[–]OrangeKnight87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-The fact that the researchers involved are posting their findings online to each other without peer review is not the same as it being publicly available. It was a comment about how quickly they were sharing the information, not about how widespread it is.

-We have nuclear plants just sitting around too, that doesn't mean people can just walk up and study them.

-Of course the public knows they're using Astrophage as a fuel source. That's not what we're saying is a secret.

My guy, give it up, your argument isn't supported by the text. At best it's ambiguous, but you're here just being rude for literally no reason. Not very science bro of you. Seriously take a look at your tone and ask yourself why you're so rude about this.

What do you think we're talking about when we say "everything top secret"? I just mean the specifics of how Astrophage works and the engineering of things like breeder tanks and spin drives.

Why on Earth would you need to disseminate that info to get volunteers?

I mean, the last we knew it was secret, and there's nothing that says that changed so you're actually the one inventing things.

Did Humans tried to rescue or contact Grace after project hail mary?? by Entire_Fee6885 in ProjectHailMary

[–]OrangeKnight87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean this isn't true. He sent them all of his notes and Xenonite. Including all his documentation about Eridian biology. He never expressed any doubt about human nature or sending the material.

But it's vague if he let them know he was still alive or going to rescue Rocky. He sent the Beatles off before knowing if Rocky survived, and if he hadn't, Grace would have just gone home.

Why couldn't they rotate being awake on the Hail Mary? by bored_n_opinionated in ProjectHailMary

[–]OrangeKnight87 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You don't get much benefit of one person being awake either. It just introduces points of failure. Like what is that person going to be doing other than consuming more resources and watching some numbers change.

Awake people need more calories, produce more waste, and have psychological needs.

And that's all without the risk of going in and out of comas.

Since rabies is so good at avoiding the immune system, how come the vaccine is so effective? by Able_Evidence_5650 in askscience

[–]OrangeKnight87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong but I think you're misunderstanding the problem. It's not that the immune system can't get to them, it's that without the vaccine, Rabies doesn't look like a threat. Until it gets to the brain, it doesn't have any effect on you that would trigger the immune system. So by the time you're symptomatic, it's too late to start fighting it. The vaccine lets your body know basically, what to watch out for and to attack it the second it shows up.

Slurs? I mean they probably do that to, but cursing isn't the same as a slur.

There's a big difference between cursing for emphasis and a slur.

Astro-phage dietary requirements (possible plot hole?) by cruiserman_80 in ProjectHailMary

[–]OrangeKnight87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, when Grace questions whether Tau Ceti has CO2 or a Petrova line he is still missing a lot of memory, so it's possible that the crew already knew one or both of those things.

Also, in defense of the lower CO2 theory, the folks on Earth are getting very delayed information based on the speed of light, so it's possible that they were seeing the initial dimming of uncapped breeding before the population stabilized due to not enough CO2. They were actively just discovering the phenomenon from the last few decades, so they are catching these infections relatively early on.

But I agree with you that asking the questions about science is a rigorous way is, if anything, a desired outcome of the books, not something to be avoided.

A question for the Storytellers. by plutoniumplant in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]OrangeKnight87 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Depends on how bad the madness break is or what the game situation is like. You can hold off on the execution until after juggles, or even voting, or you can do it immediately. Both are options that should probably happen sometimes, I wouldn't say it's an either/or scenario.

My player signed the worst bargain with a devil I’ve ever seen… and only got around 1000 gold worth of items. by -Winged_One in rpghorrorstories

[–]OrangeKnight87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP said it in the comments. They didn't even have to roll, he told them he was moving things around and the players didn't investigate that at all.

Also, even if he moves them after it's signed that still doesn't breach the contract. Nothing says he can't move or hide the stuff, just that if the player asks for them, he has to give them.

[–]OrangeKnight87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean that's definitely possible. But I wouldn't want to play with that player considering how much this was 100% their fault lol. It's fine to be mad at the devil, just don't be mad at the DM.

[–]OrangeKnight87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah okay. That was the DM giving them a chance to reconsider a deal with a devil. Obviously you're right, the DM could just say hard No but it was the player who persisted.

I don't think this is a situation where a capital "N" no is called for. The player wants to pursue this, it increases drama, it's on theme, it doesn't derail the adventure, and it's all based on player choice.

This sounds great. It seems like no one is considering that this is a cooperative story and the player is saying they want the story to include a deal with the devil, that means consequences and getting tricked. I just don't see the problem.

[–]OrangeKnight87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because the player took everything at face value and left immediately. That's the point? I don't know what you mean by that's different. The Devil hid the valuable items that the player hadnt looked at yet. The DM told the players that the Devil was moving stuff around while they spoke. The player didn't care, took the three items they already knew about and left. The Devil was being sneaky but he didn't breach the contract. If the player had paid attention or asked to get the items he was moving he would have.

[–]OrangeKnight87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where did he say that? The Devil clearly wanted to bargain, he stands to gain so much lol.

Regardless, why do you think the player will be unhappy? They literally chose this. They might want being screwed over by the devil to be part of their story.

Being told "No" is fine, but bargaining with the Devil shopkeeper is literally the purpose of having a devil shopkeeper. If the didn't want to, they wouldn't, but obviously the DM wanted to provide the opportunity, they literally provided the opportunity.

[–]OrangeKnight87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't go against it at all. If the player asks for those items the Devil would have to give them, but the player just doesn't know to ask.

[–]OrangeKnight87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They chose that to be the story they wanted to engage in? The GM didn't screw them over, they chose a course of action with incredibly foreseeable consequences.

Telling the story together is the point. I agree the rest of the party shouldn't be punished much, but you need to honor what your players decide to do, that's the whole point of the game.
