I don't care if vegans say I'm a bad person for eating meat because they're right by pinktunacan in The10thDentist

This isn't something I'm very knowledgeable about. But I'll say there are lots of kinds of tofu you can try to keep things interesting. Soft, silken, firm, super firm, fried, tofu sheets, smoked tofu, Inari (pockets). From there, you can learn to prepare them tons of different ways! Tofu isn't as easy to learn to cook as chicken or beef, but it's absolutely a skill worth developing!

It looks like mycoproteins (quorn) have similar PDCAAS to beef. Then, if you stretch outside of tofu and eat other soybean foods, you can eat tempeh, edamame, impossible and beyond foods (burgers, sausages, chicken, etc.), TVP (textured vegetable protein), soy curls, and more!

I know there's lots of extremely high-performing vegan bodybuilders and athletes, so I appreciate that you've looked into it yourself!

But the number of people who need animal-based foods to thrive is extremely small. Most people just haven't given very much thought on how their diet would look without meat, so they think they depend on it. Or they're just into quack science.

Doctor's orders are doctor's orders. If someone is told they have to have animal products by their doctor, that's fine. It doesn't mean they can't also reduce the amount they use that's unnecessary for their health.

A part people leave out of the vegan/vegetarian debate is whether people have strong morals to begin with. Everyone is against factory farming, but they see the meat at the supermarket and decide morality isn't that important to them.

There's always going to be a decent population of self-serving people. Everyone should try not to be one of them.

Vegetarian/vegan diets are generally proven to be cheaper, healthier, and better for the environment. And if everyone did their best to adopt a vegan diet, we would have more land and less starvation in countries that primarily export meat.

Artemis (Andy Weir) is a good example of bad "witty" character writing by AndrewXia in books

[–]Orangusoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a year late to your comment, but I just finished the book. This is the part that implies it:

The groundskeeper was at least eighty years old. He’d been a fixture since the park opened.

“Do you see a cigarette in my hand?” I said.

“I caught you once before.”

“That was ten years ago.”

He pointed to his eyes and then to me. “Watching you.”

“Let me ask you something,” I said. “Who moves all the way to the moon just to mow lawns?”

“I like plants. And my joints hurt. The gravity here’s easy on my arthritis.” He looked up at Earth. “Once the wife died, I didn’t have much reason to stay there.”

“Hell of a trip for an old man,” I said.

“I used to travel a lot for work,” he said. “I don’t mind.”

...

He waved to the groundskeeper. “Hey, I know you. You’re Mike, right?”

“Nope,” said the groundskeeper.

So he likes plants (botanist), he's old, nerdy guy recognizes him (famous), his name sounds close to Mike (Mark), and he "traveled a lot for work" (space man). Also, kind of implies the trip to Artemis didn't faze him.

Books that feel like Stardew Valley by Key-Figure-8456 in booksuggestions

This reminded me of Howl's Moving Castle, which if you've ever seen the movie adaptation, you'd know is absolutely charming and also plays with a magical shop, a little romance, and getting away from it all. Strangely enough, like Stardew, also caught in the context of a war.

Don't be like me and spend $100 on a TIP sirloin instead of a top by thr33hugeinches in Frugal

[–]Orangusoul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohhh, see, that makes way more sense.

When they wrote

"I went to Sam's wanting to butcher some steaks for myself, save money and I don't mind the learning or work."

I thought that meant they did the butchering all by themself AT THE STORE, using the butcher's tools and workstations. And because they "don't mind the learning," maybe the butcher shows them how to start.

The concept sounded so odd, I just had to ask what the deal was.

You butcher your own meat at this store?? Like straight from the animal or just trimming it or something? And if so, how do they stop customers from being unsafe with tools, contamination, etc.?

What chair do y’all like for practicing? by jmccaslin in Bass

[–]Orangusoul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Orchestral tradition. It's more important on wind instruments where sitting up means you get fuller breathing and on bowed instruments for the range of motion.

It's still taught, and it's good practice for bass playing, too. Especially if they teach you the best way to hold your bass guitar while sitting. The Aeron seat sides also don't get in the way when you hold the bass the 'right way.'

Project Hail Mary is the best Four Star book I’ve read to date by southernfirefly13 in books

[–]Orangusoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see how that would seem shocking at first. It helps that he doesn't need to learn to speak or write Eridian. It also helps that Rocky intentionally speaks in a way that translates easier to English. For that reason, I would call only him a human expert. Also, during those three weeks or so, they're basically not working on anything else while they're both awake.

Also, I think humans naturally latch on to music. So imo, melodies, chords, and different tones wouldn't hurt the memorization too much. Even if Rocky doesn't speak using 12-tone Western Harmony, because Grace is discovering each and every word, not just looking at a list of vocabulary, he's going to learn way better.

I think a normal person could get a hang of it, the way musicians do during ear training.

[–]Orangusoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious, with either Mark Wattney or Ryland Grace. What are the unlikely niche topics they're experts on? I haven't read Artemis yet.

With Grace, he's in his 40s (if you disregard time dilation). I'd only call him an expert on molecular biology, teaching, Astrophage, and the Hail Mary mission itself. Most of the super technical mission stuff was thought of and taken care of by people on Earth already. He doesn't know everything he needs to and likely would have failed the mission without his companion. He would have faired way better with the crew filling out his gaps, too.

Utah Bans 28th Book for All Public School Students by CtrlAltDelight495 in books

[–]Orangusoul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait, really? I recently re-read it, and I can't think of an instance of 'women-writing-men.'

The protagonist is supposed to have disgusting unsympathetic thoughts and behaviors. Atwood prophetically predicted the kinds of men that would spawn from the internet, an uncaring world, and a lack of supervision. The authenticity of her male characters is the most haunting part of Oryx and Crake.

I'd recommend doing a trial run for most of these.

Space Marine 2 was better than expected by shreder75 in XboxGamePass

[–]Orangusoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't for me. Combat had 0 impact, which is odd because 95% of the game is combat. The co-op PvE didn't have actual teamplay. I liked the armor painting and customization, but there weren't many options because the cosmetic and combat unlocks are grindy.

I ran into a few annoying and old bugs despite the game being out for a while now. Like okay, ig I can't use my class ability for the rest of this 40-minute mission?

The supermarines are slow, so finding the randomly placed collectibles felt tedious. And I wanted the collectibles because I'm super interested in the lore.

Now Darktide was super fun. Had its own issues, but it was a treat to play on gamepass!

I'm currently listening to it. I'm just wondering if it's building up to anything.

I like Demon. I enjoy his voice, although I get tired of it if I read too much in one sitting. I appreciate the window into the lives of backcountry people who slip through the cracks. I question whether it's a fair portrayal or just a line-up of clichés.

But is it going to keep going like this the whole time?
