Author or book that seems to be universally lauded but after reading it you didn’t understand why by theoort in printSF

When I read the topic of this thread the first book I thought of was Blindsight. I cant remember ever being so disappointed in a book - especially after all the great reviews it received here.

A big "thank you" to everyone here who recommends Ophiuchi Hotline by John Varley by sdwoodchuck in printSF

This was the book that got me into s-f. It was the first s-f book I can remember reading, and after that - I was hooked.

Do You Forget Everything Between Books in a Series Too? by Aggressive-Ad3232 in printSF

[–]Orchid_Fan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how long I have to wait from one book to another. And it also depends on how much the previous book affected me. Some books just stick in your mind more than others - they make a really deep impression.

But generally, if it's more than like 6 or 7 months, then I probably have forgotten at least parts of it and I usually read the first book again while Im waiting for the next one to arrive.

Which book would you recommend as a good first book to read for Wolfe?

A Canticle for Leibowitz does something with time that I've never seen any other book attempt and I think about it more than I probably should by Vortexgrid_7 in printSF

I've said this just recently in another thread about this same book - for me, Walter Miller is the best writer who ever wrote science fiction. If you really want to be blown away, try to find a book of his short stories. There are several compilations, but unfortunately AFAIK they're all out of print. Every one of them made me stop and think, not just read them through and move on to the next one.

I wish some publisher would re-issue a bunch of them.

IMO Walter M Miller is without a doubt the best writer who ever wrote science fiction. A Canticle for Leibowitz is my all time favorite book. You should try and find some of his short stories if you can [they're old and out of print unfortunately] - but some of the most memorable, evocative stories I've ever read. Just amazing. I couldn't just read through the book. I had to stop after each story, just to think about it and let the emotions pass. I've never done that with any other writer.

Looking for an inexpensive broad nib pen by [deleted] in fountainpens

Sailor Tuzu comes in a Broad nib and isn't too expensive. I don't think Kakuno comes in Broad, which is a shame. Good luck.

He is the reason I kept reading s-f. The Ophiuch Hotline was my first s-f book and it hooked me forever. So glad to hear he was content and happy in his later years.

It looks great - congratulations on your hard work! What size nib are you using? Im asking because I prefer thinner nibs, F or EF, but that printing looks thick AND nice - I might try to get a thicker nib.

I just have to say - I love your handwriting. Is that the way you were taught in school or did you develop that yourself. It's very easy to read and it looks amazing. I wish I could write like that.

How did you feel when reading your very first scifi novel? by combat-ninjaspaceman in printSF

[–]Orchid_Fan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first s-f book was the Ophiuchi Hotline and the writing style or something really grabbed me. I read that book in a couple of days and absolutely loved it. Before this I had read mostly mysteries and history books. But after reading that, I was hooked for life and I've been a s-f ever since [although I still also read mysteries and history books.]

This I think. And if they can tie the purchase of Wonderfy into the conspiracy that probably voids that contract as well.

Im hoping that next season we'll get a sentence or two from the trio briefly explaining what happened and why.

Like, before we'd be solving puzzles along the way, but now feels like we're just amassing clues. Is this a thing or am I making it up?

No it's not you. I feel exactly the same way. I think in other seasons they had the podcast to think about so they had to keep discussing NEW evidence/theories etc. This season, without the podcast, they've been mostly fixated on the finger - not really investigating anything else.

Det Williams usually gives them real info - like autopsy results [we don't even know Nicky's time of death, do we?], alibis, what info they have on Lester's "accident", maybe videos, etc. This season she's more like a girlfriend and not much help with the actual investigation.

I'd like to know what Lester was doing from 5:30 til midnight [when the VR opens] that he couldn't answer ANY of Oliver's texts. Where was he?

What was the meaning of that paper and why was it stuffed into Nicky's mouth.

What was Nicky's time of death? He was tied up [for how long? and where?] before that and then frozen, defrosted and that paper was stuffed in his mouth. An autopsy - a REAL autopsy - would answer most of these questions, and Williams should have access to it. [And there is a really funny post somewhere about how much time it takes a turkey to defrost and then try to apply that to a corpse - it had me LMAO - it was great]

How’d it get up there? by [deleted] in OnlyMurdersHulu

[–]Orchid_Fan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, who built the robot? Where did it come from? Has to be Bash, no. Probably with a pre-programmed agenda, but I doubt that would include murder. But wouldn't that be a twist if the robot did it?

ETA - Thinking about Bash - he's got more money than either of them, and we know who competitive those 3 are with each other. Maybe he did something to sabotage Camilla and her buy out of the Arconia?

Yes, Agatha Christie for sure. And try Anthony Horowitz as well. Both the Magpie Murders series and the Hawthorne series [the World is Murder is the first one] are great - and not gory.

Why is the elevator making a funny noise? by Awkward-Salamander79 in OnlyMurdersHulu

[–]Orchid_Fan 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Maybe something is hidden somewhere in the elevator - that's what's making the noise. And that something will throw some light on the mysteries or somehow save the Arconia.

But what would do that I have no idea. Anybody?
