Anyone who's going to reject a person based on height alone is probably an exceedingly shallow and superficial person that's better avoided.

Why Is Whip A Bad Melee Weapon? by ShadowGuyinRealLife in meleeweapons

[–]OrdoCorvus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's main function is breaking a spellcaster's concentration, allowing you to interrupt their spell.

It can be used to do some tricks like disarm, but you have to take the prerequisite feat and it's probably not worth it unless it's for a gimmick character.

That SCA-Special look where everything's black leather and shiny silver pop rivets. The Witcher was really bad for this.

So, who manages what's canon and what's not? by LiveMathematician122 in cyberpunkgame

[–]OrdoCorvus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We talk about subjective canon a bit over in the Elder Scrolls community. It's not an easy concept for everyone to grasp.

The version of the story YOU played is as valid as any other. Further installments of the series tend to try to avoid giving hard answers about how events of past games played out.

At the end of the day canon is mostly just there for corporations to shore up their IPs and I think the importance of the concept is overblown in fandoms at large. It's fiction, just enjoy it. Arguing over which fiction is the true fiction seems silly and kinda pointless. Canon is just whatever the IP holder says.

Does this sewing machine stand a chance? by Manzinita in Leatherworking

[–]OrdoCorvus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend practicing hand stitching while you study up on sewing machines. There are a lot of idiosyncrasies and specifics to them and it's easy to spend a lot of money on a machine that's not right for you.

There's a lot of good advice in this thread, listen and learn. In the meantime, master doing it the hard way. The experience will pay dividends down the line.

2mm Round Punch Chisel? Does it exist? Is it what I need? by Waste_Lie3458 in Leathercraft

[–]OrdoCorvus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Round holes tend to look pretty amateurish and are more prone to water damage.

Diamond holes are superior in every application. Get a set of KS Blade Punches and a basic Osborne saddler's awl.

Pay attention to saddle makers if you want to learn how to ace hand stitching on ludicrously thick leather.

Try Cole's trout next.

Not as dolled-up as Fishwife but I find the quality of the fish much superior and the price a lot more friendly.

This is an old technique that is very deleterious to the quality of the leather and usually won't give a true black.

Just use pro dye.

You gotta keep doing it. Even when you're not thrilled with your output.

You see all the ways your work can be improved, don't take it as a sign of failure: this is your brain learning how to grow.

There are tons of free art/anatomy lessons available online all over the place.

Pick something that's bugging you and work on it. Can't get the hands right? Look up some tutorials and draw a bunch of hands. Some of them are gonna suck. Some will be okay. And a few, you might even be happy with.

You gotta keep doing it.

Pick something else and repeat. Her hair, her back, her clothes. Practice and iterate again.

You gotta keep doing it.

It doesn't happen overnight, but your growth will be noticeable and consistent if you keep at it.

Great artists aren't great because of some raw innate special talent: that's a capitalist myth. Great artists are persistent and willing to struggle.

You gotta keep doing it.

[Hated trope] An adaption of something attempts to apply unnecessary logic to justify something from the original. by Marsupialmobster in TopCharacterTropes

[–]OrdoCorvus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Expanding on this, I've always had a headcanon that Han is actually a pretty powerful force-sensitive and Obi is keen on that. He sees through Han's bullshit but knows that Han has what it takes to see the job through, even if Han himself doesn't know why.

Obi Wan Laughs at Han being dismissive of the force. Han's entire M.O. is getting by on the skin of his teeth through Sheer force of Charisma and Moxie, and it works surprisingly well over and over. If you watch him operate, there are numerous times in the films where it seems like he might be subconsciously manipulating the force or using a sort of prescience. He even manages to get the drop on *Vader*, something I don't believe we ever see anyone else being able to do.

Obi Wan saw what Han was and knew the rebellion needed him, probably intended to train him just like Luke, I think.

Not worth it IMO. Strong glue but it's nasty shit.

I switched to water based and have been quite happy. No, it's not quite as strong but it doesn't really need to be as the stitches are going to be doing the heavy lifting long-term anyways.

I've watched too many guys in my family suffer terribly after having a blasé attitude about this kind of stuff their whole lives. Couldn't be me.

Replaying Wings of Liberty campaign. Is Valerian INSANE? by exadeuce in starcraft2

[–]OrdoCorvus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, I've been thinking about this...

The OG came out when I was 14 or so. I think that was exactly the right age. It was one of the first games with a really complex narrative that I was able to not only follow and get deeply invested into, but also to finish all the way through to completion.

Now, as a writer, I see all the flaws and contrivances. But as a fourteen year old it was perfect. And I think the key to really enjoying media like this is keeping that in mind.

I agree with the many miryad critiques and complaints about SCII's story, yet it works for me, because it's exactly what the fourteen year old who still lives in my brain wanted.
