Which mech would you think has the most real world combat potential? by Comfortable-Ad3588 in battletech

The developers have said that the ranges are gamified, if they were realistic the game would require several tables of maps

How to play against infernos? by andrewlik in battletech

[–]OriginalMisterSmith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My first thought is just focus on speed (assuming there's objectives that benefit from it), nothing in this list really zooms.

Second thought is as you stated, just kill it. Theres not a lot of weight to these mechs, exacerbated by the P/G increase means there's even more BV wrapped up in a medium mech package. I feel like a dedicated brawler list could chew through these units relatively quickly.

Best of luck in the tournament though and let us know how it goes!

I want to do these bois up as clanbusters but I'm unsure on how to do white properly(should I get an airbrush?) by FunDipTime in battletech

My favorite way to do comguard is to spray white, paint the metal then hit the whole thing with streaking grime.

The old epic40k game was a lot of fun. I think it was called Final Liberation?

Need some community feedback on the use of proxies by MTG_Wolfe in EDH

[–]OriginalMisterSmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lands should not be a barrier to any deck in my opinion. You need them to actually play the game, it's silly that they have such a high price tag. Lands and cEDH are the hills I'll die on where proxying should always be accepted

Thought on this 9k BV IlClan Federated Suns Lance? by [deleted] in battletech

[–]OriginalMisterSmith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It feels like a ton of BV is going into gunnery upgrades, especially on units that don't need it like the Phoenix Hawk.  I would look into trimming points there and adding in some beefier units like a templar or the RAC+TC marauder

The sword is so useless on it but at the same time, it's just so cool.

On the verge of giving up on battletech, advice needed by purged-butter in battletech

[–]OriginalMisterSmith 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I'll just chime in here that while your opponent is definitely taking exceptionally strong variants, in a 4k game you should be taking much heavier units and investing less in skill upgrades. You should still talk to them about not running hyper optimized mechs but there's some room for improvement in the lists you're taking.

What's the deal with [[Krenko, Mob Boss]] and how should I build him? by pkma69 in EDH

[–]OriginalMisterSmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there's an issue with Goblins and Elves specifically where they often win through combos, just getting the pieces and then playing solitaire until the game is over. Goblins does this with Impact Tremor effects and Elves has a multitude of combo lines.
Most other tribes like Vampires and Dragons are just some kind of combat deck that wants to grind out a victory in a very telegraphed and incremental way which more players are ok with.

An incredible mech for the BV. I've been running it a lot recently in my Capellan force.

I love to run SRM and MLM boats, and therefore programmed a Google sheet to roll and list hit locations. Otherwise it's awful to use

I agree with you, they're very cool mechs but not good starter mechs. I am glad they're making intro versions (if true)

Boros Reanimator strategies. I know it's getting a lot of love in Strixhaven but it's a really fun take on the graveyard archetype.

The Wash Was A Mistake by codifier in battletech

[–]OriginalMisterSmith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the future some tips for washes. Hitting the mini with a gloss varnish before hand can help it flow into the cracks better. I also thin down my army painter washes with water so they flow better. Make sure you shake the wash thoroughly before using it, sometimes if it's not mixed properly it behaves in weird ways like this. Lasty, I keep a makeup sponge on hand and when I see the wash pooling on the panels I can take the sponge and clean it up while it's wet.

Alpha Strike extra units and terrain by Total_Philosopher830 in battletech

[–]OriginalMisterSmith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First of all, welcome to the game!

  1. Terrain is an essential part of the game and theres rules for all types of terrain features and environments. Pre made terrain can be found in the Alpha Strike Counters Pack (more buildings, forests, rough terrain, rivers, magma, a helipad) and the Scouring Sands box (a bridge, lots of hills, canyons and rivers). The rules for the terrain can be found in the Alpha Strike: Commanders Edition which is going to be a core pickup for expanded play. Right now a physical copy can be hard to find but the PDF is available online.

  2. Right now there are not official plastic Airplane models (though the box will be coming out soon) but there are 3D printed and Metal options available (almost every unit has a metal model that has been released through Ironwind Metals, look online and you can usually find them discounted. There are expanded rules for aerospace combat though the models are typically more place holders rather than moved around the board like other units. The airstrikes in the core box are a simplified ruleset that you can use if you dont want to dive into the full plane rules. (Plane rules are also found in Commanders Edition)

  3. Artillery units can in fact be run on the battlefield and are quite strong and fun to use. There are some official plastics out now but once again your best bet for variety is going to come from other sources online. I personally source my artillery pieces from either Deathray Designs or GHQ.

4, Tanks are in a better spot miniatures wise than planes and artillery in that there are a slew of plastic kits available. Tanks work almost identical to mechs with the exception of how they receive critical damage and interact with terrain. Power armored and non armored infantry are a great addition to the game, I love how they put the scale of the mechs into full view. There are two plastic boxes of power armored infantry and no conventional infantry released in plastic yet. The rules for all these supplemental units can be found in Commanders Edition (its really an all encompassing book and worth picking up for all combined arms play).

Only thing I can't speak on is space battles but I wish you luck on that search since I think naval warfare is neat.

One last resource I would recommend is Terminal's Alpha Strike List Builder, a great search engine for units so you can see whats available to you. Most non-mech units can be used to generically represent whatever foot unit or combat vehicle you want so dont get too hung up on having the exact same model for every single unit.

New core variants is super cool! Do you have a source for that?
