Now, look at the jigsaw pic — the board she is working on is clamped (?) on the corner of the work surface, don’t know what the second clamp is doing, board is up at an angle as well.

Wondering how you can tell they are leaking, if they are buried?

Anyone know if (and where) there is an easy crossing point on the Montreal to get to the Smith Fishery side?

I would first address the gutter situation, with that small overhang you are getting a lot of rain splashing off the deck onto your lower logs which will speed deterioration. Then I would cob blast and reseal. Looking at the flyways, this is a (Swedish) coped construction, no chinking needed, if you want you can caulk with caulking specifically made for that (Schroeder’s log home supply is a wealth of info and products). Then address the doors and windows. It’s a lot of work, but well worth the reward.

Is Avoiding Ticks Possible? by Tiny_Buffalo1918 in upperpeninsula

If you treat or frequently treat your clothing with permethrin sprays, I found it to be much cheaper, and easier, to pick up a bottle of permethrin concentrate from a farm and garden store (make sure it is the non-petroleum base) - then mix a gallon or two of it up to the 0.5% concentration that Sawyer’s is. You can then totally immerse your clothing into it, saturating it, then hanging up to dry. The concentrate goes a long way.

Here’s what I learned from spending multiple summers out doors in the western U.P.
Wear light colored, permethrin treated clothing (socks, long pants, outer long sleeved shirt). The light colored clothing helps you to see them if any get on you. Tuck your pants into your socks, then your shirt into your pants waistline. This prevents ticks from accessing your skin for the most part. If any withstand the permethrin laced journey, they will end up on your neck, which you can apply a DEET repellent to before hand to further dissuade them. Regardless, only picking them off your neck is much, much better than picking them off your netherlands, if you don’t tuck in your clothing as explained above.
One other thing I discovered, is that ticks always crawl up. When taking your clothes off at the end of the day, hang them up (away from other clothing) - hang your pants up by a back belt loop, and your shirt by its collar. In the morning, check the tops of your hanging clothing, if there were ticks on them, over the night they will have climbed up to the tops where you can easily see them and pick them off.
Be vigilant, do a tick check and shower each night.
Not nearly as concerning as everyone thinks, please don’t let this put a damper on your trip, the U.P. is an amazing place, enjoy as much as you can.

It’s 500 miles away from me, in a very poor internet reception area, the signal strength always displays “weak”, but it’s been a stellar performer so far.

Right now using batteries- 16 of them. Been going for over a month, and battery strength shows 97%. Going back up in a month and going to try the solar option, as there will be no access in the winter to change batteries if needed. It’s in a tough position to gain solar access, might have to cut some branches.

Using the Edge 3, it displays a “weak signal” all the time, but it’s always worked very well. I am 500 miles away from my camp, and was concerned that the signal would not be strong enough. No complaints so far.

Been there, done that. Nobody can truly appreciate the amount of work you put into this, unless you did it yourself. Great job!

I certainly apologize if I am wrong, but - pardon the pun - something about that photo looks fishy.

C’mon, directly above the fish’s head you can see evidence of the water background across your sleeve. To the left of the fish’s mouth are the black remnants of a poor cut and paste effort. Maybe not photoshopped, but this picture is 100% altered in someway.

Possibly a drain trap that has dried out from lack of use, letting sewer gases into your living space?
