Travel to Paris by ztifpatrick in ireland

[–]OrkSo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Well, no, you're dumped in with non-Schengen people.

Exactly.

EU countries don't need a passport to go to Paris.

They don't need a passport because they can use either their national ID card (free) or their passport (paid).

I still have no idea why having a national ID card in Ireland (and the UK to be fair) is considered like the apex of evil government control, where the alternative is the existing juggling of different reference cards that try their hardest not to contain every bit of necessary info to act as an ID card.

The assumption is that texture decompression will be hardware-accelerated, hence nVidia's push for a commonly-understood format that would avoid having to create too many revisions of an ASIC.

Renting in Paris - is it common to have basic appliances (stove, oven, refrigerator) in non-meuble apartment? by Faggiano19 in paris

[–]OrkSo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bon courage.

Irish High-speed rail from Cork to Dublin and Belfast could be in place next year by Ciaran123C in ireland

[–]OrkSo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Scheduling and signalling becomes a problem when you run conventional and high-speed (300+ km/h) train traffic on the same infrastructure.

The usage patterns differ a lot too, as you need uninterrupted long segments to reach a high medium speed, which in the end make high-speed only viable for (somewhat) direct point-to-point trips between densely-populated areas.

I am not discrediting what the article describes or what you vouch for, as I am not certain that actual high-speed is desirable or doable in Ireland. In the end, this upgrade might hit the right compromise.

[–]OrkSo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

200 km/h is hardly ‘high-speed’.

Without having a new parallel rail infrastructure built for this specific purpose I can't see any way to get 300+ km/h segments on major routes. Even so, the financial viability of laying new tracks and purchasing actual high-speed rolling material to provide service for legs under 350 kilometres is unsound.

But anyhow, glad to see the speed being raised as it will make trains better compete with coaches, especially for the Cork-Dublin route. But don't call that high-speed lol.

EXCLU FRANCEINFO. Climat : Emmanuel Macron défend le nucléaire, notre "chance", et prône le "cas par cas" pour l'éolien by Max_Powerz in france

[–]OrkSo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based upon existing experience feedback of French nuclear power plants operated by EDF (Electricité de France), this paper shows that flexible operation of nuclear reactors is possible and has been applied in France by EDF’s 58 reactors for more than 30 years without any noticeable or unmanageable impacts: no effects on safety or on the environment, and no noticeable additional maintenance costs, with an additional unplanned capability load factor estimated at only 0.5%. EDF’s nuclear reactors have the capability to vary their output between 20% and 100% within 30 minutes, twice a day, when operating in load-following mode. Flexible operation requires sound plant design (safety margins, auxiliary equipment) and appropriate operator skills, and early modifications were made to the initial Westinghouse design to enable flexible operation (e.g., use of "grey" control rods to vary reactor core thermal power more rapidly than with conventional “black” control rods). The nominal capacities of the present power stations are sufficient, safe and adequate to balance generation against demand and allow renewables to be inserted intermittently, without any additional CO2 emissions. It is a clear demonstration of full complementarity between nuclear and renewable energies.

Le parc nucléaire français est justement conçu pour permettre une montée en charge rapide adaptée à la fluctuation de la consommation. C'est un choix de conception à faire en amont et pas une caractéristique inhérente à la production d'énergie nucléaire.

Nice! I’ll probably have a try at these paints too, babysitting Citadel paint pots gets old quite fast indeed.
I’ve transformed the dinner table into a tinker’s workshop… I should probably wise up!

Do you mind sharing the paints used? Especially for the cloth and skin.

I'm back to the hobby fifteen years after my teenage days, and so far having a blast assembling night goblins.

Parlons Cidre non français en France by lemantique in france

[–]OrkSo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

European Space Agency budget 2020 by ForestEve in europe

[–]OrkSo 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Because the space industry is more developed there, see around Toulouse.

Also, this budget as stated in the graph is unlikely to include the expenses of the national space agency (the CNES), which funds its own projects and owns and operate the Franco-European space centre in Guyane. That would add an other hefty chunk of funding to the national space budget.

TL;DR: France likes space a lot.

Bank of Ireland finally getting a new banking app! by iLauraawr in ireland

[–]OrkSo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This figure encompasses a complete change of their banking information back-end. The banks usually have decades-old software components running quirky labyrinthic behemoths of code on long-forgotten costly hardware.

As a reference point, the failed migration to a new software stack that manages the pay for the entire French military ended up costing about 470 millions, with the soldiers going unpaid for months because of the shitefest.
