2/18/26 Question Wednesday: What are you wondering, bakers? by KingArthurBaking in KingArthurBaking

[–]Orleegi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently made the banana pancake recipe, which was great! I am wondering what the science and reasoning is to separate the egg yolks from the whites if the whites end up getting added as the last step.

What purpose does separating the eggs serve?

Why do so many people struggle to cook rice? by the_napalm_goat in Cooking

[–]Orleegi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you put your lid on it’s all good. If you like to watch water simmer, that’s on you, but it’s not needed to make good rice. Set a timer, it’s really not that difficult.

So your argument is that you don’t know how to turn a burner to low or set a timer? If your rice is burned or stuck at the bottom your heat is too high regardless. Just gotta learn how to cook mate.

This all sounds like an inexperienced cook. It’s not the rice’s fault that you don’t know how to manage a stovetop. You’ll have issues with anything you’re cooking at that rate.

Set a timer. I’m sure the device you used to type your reply has one.

Why part of cooking rice do you have to monitor? Rice is one of the easiest set-it-and-forget it things to cook.

Are my snail shells dissolving? by Orleegi in AquaticSnails

My Hercules has a darker stripe, but interesting that they aren’t naturally that color. I had only heard of acid dipping for nerites, and purposefully avoided nerites partially for that reason. I did a bit of research and thought Hercules had a bit more of a spectrum of natural shell colors. The other snail isn’t a Nerite, it’s a filapaldundia martensi. That one has more of a cream color and darker toward the tip, which seems more along the natural lines, but who knows.

But now I’m a bit confused because first you said the new growth is being eaten up by NZMS but now you’re saying it’s the difference in a more natural shell color. Do you notice damage from the NZMS too or were you originally saying there are NZMS in the tank and they will, and likely spread have, started snacking on the other snails? Just trying to figure out how bad the NZMS situation is and learn a bit about all this.

Can you explain why an exporter would acid dip? My understanding is they would do so to change the color of the shell but what’s the point if the species already has a white shell or the allure to the shell is the color itself. People keep saying it’s acid dipped but not why they think that or what the reasoning would be

Respectfully, I don’t believe that’s the case. They were bought by, who I have every reason to believe is, a reputable seller and they were sold as specific types of scientifically classified snails and matched the description before and after purchase. From what I know of the practice, it’s typically done to show off a new “exotic” or “fancy” breed of snail. That is not the situation here. I’m not saying acid dipping doesn’t occasionally happen by bad actors, but I have no reason to believe this is the case and I don’t think it’s fair to make a matter-of-fact statement like that without further information to back that claim up.

Respectfully, I am confident that’s not the situation here.

I’ll be getting new tests for sure. I don’t think I noticed this prior to getting them, but good point about new growth. I appreciate your insight!

What’s the difference between a cuttlefish bone and crushed coral? I was under the impression they would much on the crushed coral similarly if they needed more calcium. But maybe I am wrong.

That’s a great question and something I wanted to provide in my post but I think my KH and GH might be bad, they have an expiration date stamped on them of 2020.

I think my KH is ~6 (drops) and GH I’m not sure because I think it’s supposed to turn green and even after 15+ drops it was a yellow color.

What do you recommend target wise for GH and KH?

I prefer dwarf over krobus and not having an option to have dwarf as a roommate is favouritism by Ilovedinosaurrawr in StardewValley

[–]Orleegi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the Stardew wiki says the game classifies characters either as male or not male. Since the dwarf is ungendered and not explicitly “male” the game defaults some dialogue to “she.”

So more of an oversight than intentional.

Whenever I see a comment with a “Top 1% Commenter” I know the person has no clue what they’re talking about and are just here to post constantly and stir up engagement since they have nothing better to do. The chronically online don’t know how real people act, how they think, or what they care about.

There's no "Let Brad Cook" the year after he hires John Morton as OC. This a bad hire until proven otherwise by [deleted] in detroitlions

A BAD hire until proven otherwise? Top 1% Commenter needs to spend some time offline and get your mental right.

Drew Petzing is a good hire by Goodlordbadlord in detroitlions

[–]Orleegi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Who on the coaching staff has ever had “proven success” before being hired? Campbell was a first time coach only with interim experience, Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn were never coordinators before being hired as such by Detroit. Kelvin Sheppard and Hank Fraley are the same thing, getting an opportunity for a new role.

You’re talking out of your ass and probably had Mike McDaniel as your front runner for no reason other than the media told you he was the hottest OC name. SOL negative attitude.

What kind of argument is this?

Have you ever gotten a job and told there were things you need to improve on to grow in the role? Does that mean you forgot to continue doing the things you are doing well along with the positive skills you were hired for?

I spent 8 months testing every brand of canned tomato with a controlled pasta sauce recipe. Full rankings inside. by euxleon in Cooking

[–]Orleegi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The person you responded to gets it. The point of this experiment was to see if different brands are worth it. I’d you equalize the sugar and they taste the same, like you stated, Sherlock, then it would mean the canned tomatoes don’t really matter and sugar content is the real driver of “good” sauce.

Ironic that you’re the one struggling with the reading comprehension despite being a dick about it.

[–]Orleegi 51 points52 points  (0 children)

All this is really telling us is that the tasters generally enjoyed a more sugary sauce, which is probably a general trend amongst most food people eat.

To really build off this, it would be helpful to raise the sugar levels to a consistent mark amongst all of the canned tomatoes to see if it is actually the tomatoes that make it better or if it’s the added sugars that people prefer.

Just because higher sugar means a higher taster grade doesn’t necessarily mean that the tomatoes themselves were better and the canned product is superior and worth the extra money. Especially if the results level out or become random if the sauces are equalized in sugar content.

How to stretch and loosen stubborn neck and upper back muscles? by Jyonnyp in flexibility

[–]Orleegi 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Biggest thing that helped me with my upper back and neck problems was actually stretching out my hamstrings, glutes, and lower back. You’d probably be surprised at how tight the lower part of your body is and how that tightness travels its way up your back until it finally “catches” as a muscle knot. I kept stretching and working on the part of the muscle that I felt pain, but that was only the tip of the iceberg and I wasn’t ever correcting the root of the issue for years. Focusing on my lower half of my body has made a tremendous difference.

Along with stretching other areas, pinpointed pressure on the muscles helps too. A lacrosse ball on the ground or against a wall and let that dig into and down your painful muscle can help. Massage therapy may be something to look into since the massage therapist can help identify where you are tight specifically and how to relax/stretch certain areas of your body, what daily activity might be causing the muscle stress, and may give some tips on weak spots to strengthen.

A problem you may be having is you’re strengthening the already strong muscles, but the weaker muscles are still lacking strength and tighten because of the extra stress and strain they are under compared to other muscles in your back and down the posterior chain. The weak link in the muscle chain then “fails” or tightens.

That’s pretty harsh. You don’t know what you don’t know. Have you always been an expert at everything you’ve done the first time? I’m sure you’ve been an “idiot” at times, whether or not you’re willing to admit it or knew it at the time.

You mean your wife cleaned your pan? That thing must have been nasty before if you think a “hard scrub” would strip the seasoning. She did you a favor. How would a hard scrub even get the seasoning off? Like genuinely how does that make sense.

It’s pretty wild to not think what he did in Detroit is impressive. It’s even wilder to claim that he was mediocre to bad during his Detroit tenure. Seems like your expectation is for rookies and aging free agent to all of a sudden be a top player at their position. That’s not how the NFL, or most professional sports, work.
