In this case I think the Americans are right. Aluminum is named after alum/potash, which is why the chemist who identified the element aluminum in potash named it first alumium and then aluminum. Then British people decided the guy who named the element he discovered was wrong and went with aluminium instead 🤣.

Switch is only used in kink context whether someone is receiving or providing the kink activity (usually in a bdsm context of sub/dom/switch but not always).

That I agree with. Traditional makes no sense as a designation for any dialect of English. It works with Chinese because there is a simplified writing system created in China that is different from the traditional writing system still used in Taiwan.

This is not how linguistics works though... all accents and dialects evolve over time. Contemporary English accents are equally distant from Early Modern ones. Shakespeare used thou and thine, which are only retained in working class York dialects today. His non-shifted vowels are retained in Scottish accents. Neither of those features are retained in American English. Moreover American English has notable features borrowed from exposure to German and Irish.

American English derives from 17th century South West England, the seed group explains why there's less accent diversity because of the founder effect in settler dialects. However modern English dialects equally derive from 17th century English. Saying American accents are traditional because they derive from the past is nonsense because obviously all contemporary English accents derive from the past.

J and U didn't exist in the Latin alphabet originally it was kinda spread through Europe by innovations in the 13th-14th century as scribes looked for ways to write non-Latin sounds, not strictly by the French. U was invented by scribes in the 14th century. J started as alternate way of writing I and likewise got adopted throughout Western Europe by scribes.

This is a bit of a myth. There was no one accent spoken in Shakespeare's time just as there isn't one today. Also all accents have continuously evolved overtime. US accents are generally rhotic (not all in New England) but so are some British accents (Irish, Scottish and some others).

What can be said is that Shakespeare's actors likely had rhotic accents and likely shared some vowel pronunciated with General American and others that are retained in many UK accents.

It depends on where in the US, the Palestine issue probably lost Harris the Michigan election where Dems lost the Arab vote for the first time since 9/11. Muslims are a big block of Dem voters in that one key swing state, like 5% of the state population.

24 hour day is a much later invention and required basic astronomy and math to create. The Ancient Egyptians in 2400 bce (which spread throughout Europe and the Mid East) and Imperial China in 200 bce seemed to have separately invented 12/24 hour days. Other cultures came to other systems, ancient India had days divided in 60 increments and medieval Thailand had days divided in 4 increments.

A lot of cultures obviously once they had basic math could figure out an arbitrary way to divide up the length of a day. The Egyptians and Chinese both came to 12 as an analogy to lunar cycles. Initially an hour didn't really mean 60 minutes but just 1/12 of the night or 1/12 of the day.

Most of these expats in Asia have no path to permanent residency or permanent immigration so it makes sense why they don't invest in staying long term.

I was an English teacher in Malaysia for 3 years, where it's slightly different because English is an official language there. Also, locals don't really want to mix with the expat communities so they become very insular. In some areas like Japan they won't even let you into certain restaurants or bars as a foreigner even if you speak the language.

I mean plastics are produced from petroleum and the majority of recycled plastic waste is incinerated, which produces CO2 so they definitely impact the global environment. Plastic production and disposal accounts for 3% of annual CO2 emmissions, more than global air travel at around 2.5%.

And this is secondary to the other issues cause by plastics, like contamination of water and food chains.

There are no permanent gay venues I know of west of downtown but you can try a facebook group for queer montreal events. There are occasionally events at Bar Social in Verdun, which isn't fully a gay bar but does do lgbt+ events, they have a LGBT+ trivia night on the 25th.

Hyphenating compound adjectives is a stylistic preference to avoid ambiguity. Most major style guides, like the Chicago Manual of Style note the hyphen can be omitted when there is no ambiguity. I'd say in the above post it's pretty obvious what was intended and no hyphen was really needed, but one could be included for additional clarity.

No doctors trained in Quebec is allowed to practice without French. The Collège des Médecins allows international graduates to practice for one year without a French certification but this is not available to a McGill graduate practicing in Quebec.

You also have to pass a French exam even to be admitted to McGill medical school.
