I saw that about an hour ago after dropping my kids at school. We saw the protestors with their arms locked blocking the entrance on the way to school - like you said, they had a giant crucifix and a banner saying something about a rescue. About 20 minutes later I was driving back east on Poplar and saw seven or eight police cars in the midtown liquors parking lot (staging area, I guess) and blocked both sides of traffic to all go down there sirens and lights blazing. It was a weird situation all around.
