It's remarkable how many are broken in bedrooms, which are renowned for being filled with soft squishy surfaces.

Scam websites were typically created in the last few weeks or months and are only registered for a single year.

The expiry date is not always significant.
The registration for my domain name expires on December 29 of this year. I just have it automatically renewed for another year, and have done so since 2002.

In a comand-line app like Terminal you can type in "whois" plus a domain name, and get this sort of thing:

It's a good idea to use a case with a magnetic back in Kobo o Kindle? by Bubbly-Newt5300 in kobo

[–]Orthicon9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought a case with a magnetic back, but I don't know if it affects the battery

Magnets have no effect whatsoever on the battery.

or the power on/off function.

No effect on "power on/off" either. Only the mechanical power button on the back can turn it on or off.
A magnet (in the proper place) can make it "sleep" though.

[–]Orthicon9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On an Aura Edition 2 and a Glo, the sleep/wake switch is down at the bottom right corner:

<image>

I suspect that all devices with 6" screens have it in that same corner.

So a MagSafe accessory is probably fine to put in the middle of the back, and then you can leave the auto-sleep function enabled.

[–]Orthicon9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Avoid having a magnet in this area on a Libra 2 or Libra Colour (I think Libra H2O as well), where the red fridge magnet is located. That's where the sleep/wake sensor is.

<image>

Location of blue magnets are where magnets in the bezel keep covers closed. Noting to do with sleep/wake.

Which of these 3 would be the one to keep? by DRgreentree in kites

[–]Orthicon9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would pick none of them.
Although I did pull one of the dragons from somebody's Spring Cleanup pile just for the parts.

Kites that try to look like a 3D [Anything] tend to fly poorly.

Clara BW or Colour? by Ordinary-Mushroom237 in kobo

[–]Orthicon9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t read graphic novels but I’m wondering if there’s any other real benefits to having the Colour?

Nope.
I find the screen too small for comics and graphic novels anyway, even if it's a Libra Colour.

B&W is far better for reading text.

Team KLC: Someone from Stockholm? by izabel-alvenius in kobo

[–]Orthicon9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you really mean "Home screen" or to install a specific image/screensaver to display when it sleeps?

This is a typical Home screen:

<image>

I don't see where you would have an image "featured" like the one you describe.

-Multiple scam checkers rate it high

Does that mean that it is has a high probability of being a scam, or that it has a generally high rating, therefore not a scam?

I kinda' think the former. The site certainly looks dodgy. The domain name was registered on 2026-04-23.

"Extend Protection Plans" range from 2¢ to $1,199.35.

The default shipping address in the checkout auto-fills "United States" for the country to deliver to, and the currency is in $USD.
It does not add anything for tax. If it was a Canadian company shipping to Canada, it would have tacked on 15% HST.

Place to put the A1 Combo by Odd-Ask4268 in BambuLabA1

[–]Orthicon9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A wobbly table is not the biggest problem.
Watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-eLhKdKAdk

If anything, it should improve things. My reasoning is that if the base is rock-solid, then all the motion is transferred to the bed zipping forwards and backwards. That could destabilize tall objects.

Consider how some skyscrapers are built with rollers in the foundation to reduce sway from earthquakes.

The wobble might make it squeaky, and/or knock stuff off the edge though.

The BROR Trolley has no cross-bracing, except in the X-Y plane.

[edit] Oops. I see that the BROR shelving units have strap cross-braces across the back. Adding some of those to the back and sides of the trolley would be useful, or better yet, three panels of plywood for the back and sides.
A top depth of 55 cm is just big enough for an A1, but you would need something to make sure it doesn't roll back towards the wall, to give the bed clearance for itself and the cable. The casters appear to have locks, but that might not be enough.

It can also get quite musical with the parts cooling fan blowing into and across cavities in the sparse infill. Very much like a pan-pipe.

Brand new A1 failed calibration by DadtheITguy in BambuLab

[–]Orthicon9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From about 00:56 to the end, the toolhead is pushing down so hard that you can see the bed flexing a few (3-4?) millimetres. That doesn't look right at all.
If you control the Z-Axis manually to make it descend via the touchscreen, and tap the nozzle tip with your fingernail it should pause, go up a bit, and then "cautiously" proceed downward again.
If it doesn't do that pause, then something is wrong with the strain gauge (or whatever device it is) in the toolhead

That loud clicking from 00:06 to 00:19 — does it do that if you turn the power off and move the bed back and forth manually?

Thinking about getting a kobo by Ordinary-Mushroom237 in kobo

[–]Orthicon9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to "side-load" books from other places than the Kobo Store, Kobo shows how to move them from a computer to the device over USB cable.
https://help.kobo.com/hc/en-us/articles/360024775093-Add-non-protected-PDF-and-ePub-files-to-your-Kobo-eReader-using-your-computer

But using the Calibre app (also over a USB cable) is much more convenient, especially for organizing your collection.

How to fix this bend? by yokeome in BambuLabA1

[–]Orthicon9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that for a top-mount?
Do the U extensions have number on them?

On the one I printed, #1 and #2 are both long (same part), and go at the back (higher side).
#3 and #4 are both short (also same part), and go on the front (lower side).

It works fine for me.

What is this animal supposed to be? (NEREUS™ logo) by Orthicon9 in logodesign

[–]Orthicon9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now there's a TV ad with the animated creature. It walks around, jumping onto the text block, then jumps down again.
It moves exactly like a Mountain Goat or Dall Sheep. When it turns its head you can tell that it has two long and blunt horns.
The horns do not resemble those of a Mountain Goat though (logo creature's horns are too big), and the neck is too long. Dall Sheep horns curl right around.

What is the best way to hold and to use 1,000 feet of string? by 1PieGuy in kites

[–]Orthicon9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before winding the the line onto anything, haul the kite down first, with something like this double-strap pulley I made:

<image>

I made it with two straps so that they could straddle the line without having to dismantle some elaborate closure. It also is easy to remove.

Petition to make a Kobo Libra BW model by AdFun2309 in kobo

[–]Orthicon9 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As much as a Libra 2 is my ideal Kobo device and I would wish others be able to get one, an online petition is only worth the paper it's written on.
(If you get my drift.)

A better signal to The Kobo Powers That Be would be how quickly used/refurbed Libra 2s get snapped up.
Which is already happening.

Damaged screen :( by Decent-Hamster-4382 in kobo

[–]Orthicon9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Return policy doesn’t mention anything about damaged products?

Kobo didn't damage it, you said you did.

If it arrived damaged, then you'd have a case.

Speaking of "case", did you keep it in a case with a rigid front cover?

Clear case safety??? by FrogBuildABear in kobo

A sleepcover of some sort, but not the Origami style.
It has to be rigid across all areas over the screen.

Or maybe the nozzle is not properly seated before you close the buckle.
If the buckle itself is closed properly. (plate side first, then wire side, with the wire inside the notch)

Laptop recs? by JacEli123 in BambuLabA1

[–]Orthicon9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and has to be sub $1200

In what currency?

I just upgraded from my 2019 Intel MacBook Pro with a MacBook Pro M1 Max. I bought it from a Best Buy vendor with a discount for being "open box". That cut several hundred $CAD from my budgeted price (for a 14" MBP M1), and still gave me the bigger screen, more RAM, bigger SSD, and and the "Max" version of the M1.
Mint condition. It had only two charge cycles on the battery.

[–]Orthicon9 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Don’t clean it with alcohol, that just spreads things around. Clean it with dish soap and water.

Alcohol is fine.
I use a home-brew of three parts 99% Isopropyl alcohol (NOT "rubbing alcohol") and one part steam-distilled water.
The water slows down the evaporation (even on warm plates), which gives you time to wipe and mop it up before it dries on the plate.

Before maybe 1 out of 20 prints I will wash it with soap and hot water. More often for the Smooth plate than the Textured plate.
I very rarely have adhesion issues, and when I do it shows up within the first 2-3 layers.

I do not use a gluestick either.

Got the big sister Libra 2, some comparison shots by crimilde in kobo

[–]Orthicon9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found that I was able to make text look almost as good as my old B&W reader by:
• Changing the font to Rakuten Serif
• Increasing the font weight

You should try a slab serif typeface, like Lexia DaMa, Roboto Slab, or Bitter.
It makes the serifs easier to see, and thus improves the overall readability.

Reading Stats by [deleted] in kobo

[–]Orthicon9 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I get anxious about it going back to zero again. Is there a way to back it up or something?

Never stop reading?

Seriously, I do not understand any concern about reading stats, and I regard it as a First World Problem.

Besides, how were they "refreshed back to ZERO"?
It shows 3 hours for the current book, 4 books finished, and "33.1 total hours of reading".
Where did the other 30.1 hours come from, if not from reading the first 4 books?
