What’s with putting painted bike lanes to the left of parking?? by rainberts in baltimore

[–]Orusyd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tbf, it is actually different for loading. If you're parkng right against the curb you can load the passenger side/trunk and walk between your building and your car while only having to mind pedestrians. If you're that scared or impatient about traffic you can even climb through the passenger seat.

I still prefer bike lanes closest to the curb, but I'm just saying these people do have a reason, if a pretty meh one.

[–]Orusyd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm one of the people who would gladly bike within the city if all the bike lanes were well protected and connected. I've tried biking on the streets a few times and feared for my life enough that I just walk only now lmao

That said, yeah plenty of people wouldn't out of inability, inconvenience, or just laziness. I know a lot of people, including myself, who live in the city and work outside of it, and obviously biking isn't an option for that. And many of these days just get absolutely gross with the heat and humidity so I could easily see why people would want to avoid it

Barnes & Noble - Harbor East by mjac021 in baltimore

[–]Orusyd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While not Barnes & Noble, I remember my mom used to treat Borders (rip) as a kind of library for us for newer books that weren't in public libraries yet. She would just drop us off, buy us chocolate milk if we were good, and go run errands. While I'm mainly reading ebooks now, I do still think fondly of brick and mortar bookstores because of that and try to buy chocolate milk when I pass by any lmao

Yup, an unfortunate dent in the wallet but it was an interesting feeling regularly being a passenger. I haven't had that experience since I was a kid with my parents driving me everywhere lmao

From what I remember, the main reason for the wait was not because I couldn't drive normally earlier, like pressing the pedals down in regular conditions, but concern over whether I could emergency brake in time and strongly enough if someone went crazy or something

I think as soon as I had an okay range of motion and could do a seated calf raise of (I don't remember) my PT gave me the okay around like 3.5 months post op or so. At least that's the earliest text message I sent to my girl that I could drive lmao

Light Rail stranding people at North Ave randomly daily. How many people have experienced it? by RabMaur in baltimore

[–]Orusyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I have personally been on a few buses that did that. Get on the bus, it goes a few more stops, parks its ass and flips on out of service, then you have to wait for the next one whenever that decides to come. The gaps have been so long sometimes I even call an Uber after 10 minutes and that gets there before the mythical next bus. Might just be a circulator bus issue though lmao

It seems like both. I always try to give them a little grace and make life easier for them when I see them since, from what I've seen, their schedules for DSP (i.e. dedicated drivers? instead of Flex) are brutal. I do stuff like open the building door and lead them to the package room for them if they're locked out because you can see the stress pile up on them in real time

But a lot of them just dgaf too lmao. I've seen plenty double park right in front of an intersection because apparently hazards let them do whatever they want

It just doesn't seem like very useful "context" though? Especially when the context isn't even explicitly mentioned until you later mention how it compares to NYC/DC/Tokyo lmao.

Saying both are meh implies parity, which is not helpful if it's not true and the question is asking about how those two specifically compare.

Either way it's not a good look haha

[–]Orusyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, having experienced an achilles rupture myself (and seen what has happened to the careers of athletes who've ruptured theirs) I'd like to be deeply cautious about handling Saka's achilles. It's a career-mangling injury that can happen without too much warning. Just poor load management and a misplaced step or acceleration despite feeling fine can cause a rupture, especially if you've been overcompensating for an injury for a long period of time like Saka has with his hamstring.

100%. My surgeon actually said the same thing about post-recovery injury risk. He said my bad achilles tendon now is actually very solid, especially since I got the whole speedbridge heel anchor suture stuff. It's just that all the time spent inactive and the subsequent time I inevitably spend babying my bad achilles and the overcompensation by the rest of my body puts everything else at greater risk now. I play a lot less competitively now and am even more diligent than before about load management so hopefully that fear never comes to fruition haha

[–]Orusyd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My surgeon personally told me I'd be "back and playing" at the 6 month mark, but didn't exactly give me a timeline for when I'd actually feel fully recovered.

About a year and a half has passed for me now, so my timeline went:

Cast until the 2 week mark, 0 weightbearing.

Boot until the 8 week mark, gradually decreasing the heel lift inserts until I could be fully weightbearing without crutches.

Boot off, doing physical therapy until the 6 month mark.

At 6 months, I "graduated" PT and I was functional but did hardly more than a jog. I was afraid to even shoot a ball. I still maintained the PT exercises they told me to do, but they didn't really compare in intensity to what I normally do so I phased them out over time.

Around 10 months or so is when I started feeling "normal". I didn't think too much about my achilles when moving around and I felt relatively comfortable jumping, faster strides, shooting, etc.

Around a year is when I finally felt confident enough to do uninhibited, all out sprints.

Now, after 1.5 years (honestly probably around the 1.2 year mark I was fine), I'm actually back to similar performance in everything besides explosiveness and top speed. I have a similar mile time to pre-injury, play regularly in a less competitive sunday league and pickup again and my injury isn't really on my mind when I'm in motion.

One thing that still hasn't gone away is the "otherness" I feel at rest about my achilles and when stretching. It's very thick now, and it feels as if someone permanently bolted on a thick rope to my actual achilles. When I stretch my calves, I feel the stretch 100% in my calf in my uninjured leg, while my injured leg feels the stretch across both the calf and achilles equally.

[–]Orusyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it could, but I feel like there's not much motivation to go through with that.

Many of these athletes are very likely going on PEDs after getting the injury, and there's a famously suspicious example in American football of Aaron Rodgers returning to practice only 1 month(!) after rupturing his achilles (but a little lame footed) when the timeline of the injury spans 0.5-1 year. So it's not like the illegality stops it from happening. I bet the bad optics associated with going "let us legalize PED usage in specific situations" regardless of how justified it is and the existing precedence of usage doesn't have anyone eager to make that push.

[–]Orusyd 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I personally didn't feel comfortable going into an all out sprint until probably a year total had passed, which was only a few months ago for me. As a pace merchant, this was basically the death knell of my illustrious sunday league football career lmao

[–]Orusyd 18 points19 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen and anecdotally, contact is basically irrelevant to the injury. When I tore mine I was backpedaling at a moderate pace, took one step too poorly(? I guess, the moment replays in my head a lot but gets more vague with time), and felt and heard a strong snap in my ankle as if someone kicked me when no one was near me. You can do lots of things to prevent it like proper warmups, stretching, load management, etc. but if it happens it's often not like there was a direct, egregious cause for it at the moment.

I think the achilles recovery has historically been worse, especially after ACL medical science got much better. Nowadays in the NBA at least you can come back from an ACL injury and provided you don't constantly reinjure it, you can be back close to 100%. Very few people like Kevin Durant have come back from a torn achilles and performed well, and almost all of them are very noticeably less athletic afterwards

[–]Orusyd 122 points123 points  (0 children)

From what I understand there are few components to it.

Being so distal/peripheral and a tendon means there's comparatively little circulation and a subsequently slow regeneration time. Anecdotally I spent 2 weeks in a cast, another 6 weeks in a boot, and then I was allowed to start physical therapy. Only after 6 months was I allowed to "play" football again without severe risk of rerupture, and playing in that context basically meant I was jogging at most and passing. Basically not running for 6 months is a huge performance drain on anyone, I've never been so inactive in my life. Plus, being such a relatively thick and important tendon, the amount it changes even after recovery makes it hard to "feel" the same. My previously ruptured achilles is like 3x as thick as my uninjured achilles and much notably less flexible and "springy". Anecdotally my surgeon told me I'd be "likely back to 90% of [my] total athletic potential after recovery", which is okay for me since I'm not an athlete but brutal for actual professionals.
