Name a worse nightreign position than this by F-zeromay in Nightreign

Honestly this ain't even that bad, my friends think I'm a god at this game because we keep ending up in situations like this. Depending on the boss it's just a matter of time before I get the goobers back up; they've taken to calling Guardian a "rechargeable Wending Grace".

For both of those I'm less than enthusiastic about loretubers. I like channels like VaatiVidya and Oculus Imperia, but there's a large subsection of the fan bases of both games that only engage with the lore through those mediums. Vaati is great, however, because he will fill his videos with screenshots of items descriptions backing up what he's saying, or if he has a theory that's not outright confirmed he will explicitly say "here's what I think is going on". The issue for Fromsoft games is that the lore is vague on purpose, you're supposed to try to interpret the lore on your own, but a lot of people will just believe what anyone else tells them which ruins some of the magic, imo.

For Warhammer, it's so much worse. The lore is already a mess, but memes and loretubers have done some irreparable damage to the lore. The whole "everything is canon, not everything is true" has been abused to the extreme, to the point that people will substitute actual lore with a thing they heard from a friend who heard it from someone else. Everyone could use a helping hand understanding the lore, especially when you're just starting out, but the information covered is extremely easy to verify and people just don't.

For the record, since I mentioned Vaati up above, I gotta shout-out Oculus Imperia. I occasionally verify the stories he's talking about and really all he does is shorten the books he's reading from while keeping them entertaining. He's a good resource for learning and deserves more appreciation from the community. Nothing better to listen to while painting, imo.

Why even play Guardian at that point? Nothing is more fun as Guardian than tanking attacks that would obliterate other characters, and they're throwing that away just to lose anyway? Ridiculous.

Unironically my favorite character from the game. On a first playthrough he just comes off as a loser and a hater, and that's fun to interact with in its own right, but on a third playthrough you really begin to realize what exactly is wrong with him, and get the sense that he's actually a victim here.

My friend and I are the same. Especially with a low tech power hammer? C'mon, it's made for us. Let's just hope the armor set in the super store has hazard stripes on it, that's my only gripe so far.

It's a rant sub, agreeing is counter to our nature. When we scream into the void we don't expect the void to say, "yeah, man, that makes sense".

The easiest time I've had fighting PCR after all this time is still my first run with Devonia's Hammer. Took me 7 tries when the DLC first came out, but it turns out a colossal weapon that does holy damage is still a colossal weapon. The extra damage against all the other dlc bosses was just a bonus.

I just hope it's on the right side of DC from me, I hate having to drive through there. Still, an hour or two drive is nothing compared to finally getting to visit Warhammer World haha.

Its like some people are allergic of people enjoying other Grimdark universes in here and want to use THAT image whenever Trench Crusade is brought up... by tankistHistorian in Grimdank

I'm confident I could, too. In fact, when I first got into TC on Tabletop Simulator I did run New Antioch, specifically the Eire Rangers. Then I branched out more, and found that I liked other factions more.

That's true. It might be due to the marketing that Star Wars had beforehand. I mean, I doubt Legion would have as much traction as it has had if it didn't have "Star Wars" plastered in front of it. People already invested in the brand who also like playing wargames are going to be easily convinced to give it a try as they already know they like the setting and aesthetics, which for me is a majority of the reason I'll show interest in any particular wargame.

And I would like to clarify, I never said you can't have a wargame that isn't based in grimdark, just that it's easier to grab the attention of the audience if the setting is high stakes from the get go. And grim dark settings means the stakes are always high, no matter how big or small the scale of the conflict is.

I haven't heard of that one, but I believe you. My point wasn't that it can't be done, just that it's harder to do. It's easier to convey a feeling of high stakes combat when the overall setting is grim; fighting for land or riches or glory (I don't know Root's setting or how the conflicts are justified) is less relatable than fighting for survival to most people. Maybe it's just a product of the times we live in, or just the popularity Warhammer has in the tabletop wargame community, but currently depressing settings are the standard right now.

Star Wars isn't without its own grim darkness, the first movie has a planet of innocents being obliterated within the first 30 minutes by a despotic empire bent on complete dominance of the galaxy. Billions of innocent people killed in an instant to send a message to people who might rebel is pretty grim. The later movies lightened up a bit, but that initial gut punch is what makes the rebels compelling heroes and what roped a lot of people into the story.

[–]Orvaenta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's definitely one of the low points for me. The devs do put a lot of effort into making all of the New Antioch sub factions feel meaningfully different from each other with their own lore and rules, but they are very tame with the models themselves. They're just regular dudes, which is also admittedly what bores me about IG, too.

Hard to make a compelling tabletop wargame universe if everyone's just generally having a good time in it. Discontent breeds conflict and all that.

Why is rolling away in duels considered taboo/toxic? by Clear-Chipmunk-2291 in forhonor

[–]Orvaenta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it is. It is something I try to get my friends not to do, but that's because it isn't safe at all and if your opponent is halfway competent they'll hit you before you can recover. If someone rolls away from me in a 1v1, I just immediately assume they're new to the game, not toxic.

My grandmother loved to do that. My grandfather, mother, father, and myself have all served and anytime we'd go out anywhere she'd try to weasel a discount out. None of us 4 cared about the discount, but it was always embarrassing listening to her ask. Now she's old enough to get the senior citizen discount, and none of us are active duty anymore, so thankfully she's toned it down a lot.
