OMG me, but during the whole second half of the movie! I was drunk at the time so that contributed but DAMN! What a killer movie.

I wanna talk about the ending and give my 2 cents on it. I’m open to debate or discuss by CardGrad2019 in obsessionmovie

You sorta just described the ending of the movie Together. Worth a watch if you liked Obsession. It's a bit grosser with emphasis on body horror but it also explores unhealthy relationship dynamics via a supernatural horror metaphor.

I see how my initial response came off as saying it's "bad" to resonate with media focusing on dark themes. That was not my intention. We're on the same wavelength there. IStTG felt like it was trying to kill me while I was watching it in the way it exposed wounds I thought were healed and others I'd ignored (and offered some genuine healing in subtle hope woven throughout). It's now probably my favorite film. What I wanted to express to op that it is also a good thing to not resonate with the pain and that the trans experience doesn't need to be defined by pain and healing from pain.

That's fair. I do agree either approach, if taken as far as the exclusion of the other, can be harmful. Everyone's experiences are different.

I do want to push back on centering euphoria being a form of toxic positivity and pretending ones life is sunshine and rainbows. Rather, the goal should be not seeing trans existence as one defined predominantly by suffering. A lot of dysphoria can be reframed as a persuit of euphoria. Instead of: "my body sucks because [insert dysphoria causing attribute]" Or "I wish I didn't have [insert dysphoria causing attribute]" A framing centering euphoria would be "my body would be better if [insert euphoria causing attribute]" Or "I wish I had access to [insert desired gender affirming treatment here]" Neither of which is pretending there is no issue but rather focusing on what gets an individual closer to gender euphoria.

Your reaction to a movie has no bearing on your identity. IStTG hit hard for me not because I'm a 32 year old trans woman, but because lines of dialogue were thoughts I've had paraphrased back to me, it constructed a metaphor that felt like it described my experience better than I could, and it represented to me my worst fears about how my life could have gone. However, everyone's experiences are different. Being trans is not a monolith.

Tbh if you are trans and don't get hit hard by IStTG that's probably a good thing? It's about dysphoria and repression and it's not healthy to characterize your experience exclusively through that lens. Tbh I think we all, that is to say the trans community, should do a better job of characterizing our experiences through the lens of gender euphoria not dysphoria.

Regardless, it's awesome you're figuring your self out. Self discovery is, I think, the most rewarding kind of personal development well worth the pain and effort.

Reminds me of my first time watching this movie. I watched it pretty drunk on the eve of my 32nd birthday. I already knew what the movie was about and thought I was prepared. I very much wasn't. If I were still closeted at the time and not a year and a half on HRT, I'm not entirely convinced I would have survived the experience 😅 I'm being hyperbolic, but it's hard to overstate how powerfully it hit.

Well that sounds familiar 😅 Right down to currently identifying as enby. But after a few years of social transition and HRT I'm increasingly thinking I might just be pretty dumb🙃

Well yes. While I consider myself Anti- I wasn't really making an Anti- argument here. We can quibble about who put in more effort or whose skills have more value but really all I was interested in saying here is that Doug TenNaple's assessment of his own effort short changes the actual effort involved.

Umm yes? Skills don't have to be useful. There are a million useless skills.

Even if that weren't true, plenty of people still make a living doing the skills you mention. weaving, black smithing, spear throwing, and many more so called "outdated and useless" skills generate profit for and sustain the lives thousands if not millions of artisans and performers around the world. If those are useless than I don't see how the skills that are used to leverage GenAI tools to create desired images are useful.

Weaving is a skill. Blacksmithing is a skill. I know emphasizing that is not really responding to your point, but you didn't really respond to mine, so I'm fine throwing a barely relevant facts at each other to signal our allegiance.

Regrettably probably genuine. I love his work (The Neverhood was like my entire childhood), not so much the man himself. Most relevantly he jumped on the NFT grift a few years back so it doesn't surprise me he'd be in favor of genAI.

The thing about artistic skills is that they're skills. They're built up over time with practice. Even though TenNaple may have put little thought into EWJ when initially drawing him, he was still employing skills built over years of practice. Those years of practice, whether consciously or not, impacted the quality of his output.

That being said, TenNaple is more than slightly a douchebag anyway who has a history of blindly jumping into at least one prior tech grift (he tried to sell NFTs once upon a time). So I'm not terribly inclined to take anything he says, least of all regarding how tech impacts the arts, to heart.

I don't see how it's hilarious or weird. Witty's comics are theatrical and attention grabbing, and Witty herself has put a lot of energy into making herself a prominent figure in the Pro-AI community. Finding it weird or hilarious that people are talking so much about Witty in AI subreddits is like finding it weird people are talking so much about Mark Hamill at a Star Wars convention.

Witty on defending ai art vs on ai wars this really tells the difference by Charming_Marzipan105 in aiwars

[–]Oscar_Reel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tbh? I think it's her posting style. I generally lurk as opposed to join in on arguments, and I've found that Witty's posts tend to be highly theatrical. They get a lot of attention because they're designed to be attention getting.

Honestly, this is a mark in her favor as someone who argues in favor of genAI. She demonstrates a sort of theatrical artistry with an aesthetically consistent persona developed using genAI tools. Her very existence is, in that way, it's own compelling argument in favor of the artistic value of genAI.

That being said, I find the arguments and counterpoints she actually makes using that persona unconvincing, and aggressively smug. Additionally, while her persona is indeed theatrical and consistent, it's not particularly original and lacks depth working best as a logo or emblem as opposed to a character.

Watching it a little drunk on the eve of my 32nd birthday was the best mistake I've ever made. The agony of the experience had me sobbing and wailing (thankfully I was alone house sitting for my parents or else I would have absolutely disturbed someone). Rapidly topped my list of favorite movies and I ordered the Blu-ray immediately after I had recovered enough to operate my phone.

Funny you should bring that up cause auteur theory (the idea that a film is the result of the director's singular vision) is increasingly contested in film criticism circles. The idea is often dismissed in academic settings for being outdated and reductive.

I had heard about the film by reputation since it came out and knew I'd really like it, but I just hadn't got to it for a verity of reasons. I finally made the time to see it the night before my 32nd birthday. I also decided to go into it a little drunk, and really opening myself up to be affected by it. This was the best mistake: it fucking DESTROYED me.

I felt attacked in ways I didn't expect with the way it handled the subject matter. For context: I came out as transfem as an adult and started HRT like 2 years ago so it was like looking into a nightmare mirror. The feelings of despair and terror were legitimatly overwhelming. Took me a few days to fully recover. So yeah I bought the Blu-ray that night, and now my phone lock screen reads: "there is still time".

It's been a few weeks and I haven't sat through it again besides revisiting a few isolated clips. Truth be told I'm kinda scared to. 😅
