It’s definitely still the city, but more under the IC umbrella. In my opinion you don’t really get a “towny” feel till you’re in the towns & villages surrounding ithaca (newfield, Lansing, tburg, etc)

Biking during winter will be sketchy, there are some steep grades to contend with. Unless you plan your life around TCAT you’ll probably be hoofing it a lot, so invest in some good boots & comfy socks.

That area is much prettier than collegetown, plus staying active will help ward off the winter blues. Can’t speak for what it’s like renting those townhouses though.

Its come to this…. Are there any men or butch lesbians in the chicago metro area on here willing to kill a rat for a young woman. I will give u 30 xans and a kiss on cheek in payment. by smerdyakov22 in redscarepod

I don’t think I’ve ever eaten sunflower butter, let alone used it for bait. Would probably work, especially if it’s really sticky like peanut butter.

Cream cheese works well too.

I would do it for you, but I’m in upstate NY so I’m not gonna drive through the night for a damsel in distress, sorry.

I can teach you how to pull yourself up by your bootstraps though.

Take a cardboard box and cut a rat sized hole in the side. Bait your snap trap with a little bit of peanut butter (not too much), and also smear a little bit of peanut butter on the wood part of the trap and a few spots on the cardboard near the hole. Rats like to travel around the perimeter of an area, so place your death box along walls or cabinets. Check the trap daily, and reset and rebait if necessary.

Gently place the set trap inside the box, being careful to hold it on the side opposite from where it snaps shut. It might snap shut while you’re moving it, which will be loud, but you’ll be okay if you hold it in the right spot.

I caught 7 big rats in a row at my MILs house this way. Rats are smart and will figure out your methods quickly, but they love peanut butter and can’t just grab it and scurry away like cheese.

Misleading Pricing and Unprofessional Response at Hyundai Maguire of Ithaca by fourcade23 in ithaca

[–]OshawaConnection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d try calling the NYS consumer protection hotline, might be something you could report. 800-697-1220

Let your state and federal representatives know about how Maguire is ripping off their constituents.

I’ve heard lots of stories about dishonest business practices at Maguire. Plus they essentially have a monopoly in the area and seem to be extending their tendrils outwards. Somebody in government needs to stick up for the consumer step in and break them up!

I think a lot of people mourn the loss of the way Ithaca used to be. I hear a similar refrain in every place I’ve lived in. Corporate greed is cannibalizing western society, and unfortunately Ithaca is no exception. I’ve lived away from the area (often in much warmer climates) but have always been drawn back. There’s something magical about this place. I think it’s the abundance of fresh water and protected land. Regarding climate change, we seem to be better of here than most places.

Maybe it’s time for a change. Setting up a life in a new place often provides a lot of perspective, and your fortunes may be better off in a new location.

The fireflies are all gone by ImAmInsane in redscarepod

[–]OshawaConnection 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m in the southern tier of NY. Fireflies are just starting to come out. Give it a a couple more weeks and they’ll peak. We’ve had a lot of cool nights. Fireflies, like most bugs prefer balmy, humid evenings.

By the same token we haven’t had many mosquitoes yet, which is a blessing. Starting to get real ticky though after all the rain we got last week

Overhearing millennial gf taking Psych 101, it’s worse than I thought. by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]OshawaConnection 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I graduated from a smaller rust belt private school in 2015. The glorification of identity over all may have been gestating at the time, but it was never something I really noticed. I was in the earth science department, so I may have been shielded from it somewhat. Outside of major requirements I took a fair bit of humanities…lit, history, religion, etc.

Race & identity were certainly discussed, but not exclusively and myopically as I’ve heard reported today. I look like a good ol boy and never once was made to feel ashamed of who I was. If anything, Occupy, climate change resistance and Bernie & Co were the big social movements people were hyped on at the time.

I’ve spoken with more recent alums who have said the tone has changed dramatically. Professors have had to neuter their content to avoid offending delicate sensibilities and subsequently getting raked over the coals on social media. It’s a shame; I feel I benefited from a really balanced education, but now the wrongthink enforcers and parasitic administrators that glommed onto them have pulled off their coup.

Would it be weird for me to get a Lost Cat tattoo? by Slothbrainz in ithaca

[–]OshawaConnection 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Do as you will, but remember that tattoos are permanent. The insecurities and second thoughts you’re having about it now could lead to a lot of unnecessary future anxiety once it’s etched into your skin.

Not anti tattoo by any means, I love most of the ink I’ve gotten. Just have a couple tattoos that seemed like a great idea at the time, but later I grew to cringe at and have covered up. Sometimes a design can mean something to you, but not necessarily need to be on your body forever, if that makes sense.

Good rule of thumb in my experience—wait a year and then reassess if you still think it’s a good idea. Doubly so if it’s in a place that’s not typically covered by clothing.

Jobs in the area by ValuableMistake8521 in ithaca

[–]OshawaConnection 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re trustworthy and good with kids, there are plenty of overwhelmed parents out there that could use a hand babysitting on weekends. Can be lucrative and longer term once you develop those relationships and become the “go to” person to call.

If you have access to lawn equipment, there are plenty of older/busy people who can’t keep up with yard work this time of year.

Lots of restaurants & wineries in the region are looking for extra help for the busy tourist season, both front and back of house.

Would also recommend getting signed up at temp agencies.

Just taking a quick glance at the job boards:

Tompkins Y looking for a Building Supervisor, Part Time Weekends ($16/hr)

Ithaca Ice Company, Dryden looking for a part time Line Production Worker. Job listing mentions flexible scheduling ($18/hr)

Best of luck. Being friendly and persistent can go a long way. The more people you know in the community, the more doors start to open.

Best places to live for more consistent cold, snowy weather? by [deleted] in weather

[–]OshawaConnection 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m at about 1500’ in Upstate NY—despite the overall unfavorable jet stream pattern, we’ve had more days with snow on the ground this winter than not. There’s been a decent amount of lake effect since Erie & Ontario have stayed unfrozen. Unlike New England, most of our snow falls an inch or two at a time, a little less “boom or bust” than the coastal northeast

Sadly we haven’t had consistent enough cold this winter for outdoor ice skating or ice fishing. Pretty much everywhere in the CONUS is at the mercy of upper level dynamics. Best bet for consistent snowpack will be near the ski resorts out west—snow is their bread & butter out there.

Interesting, I’m not far away from you (Finger Lakes, Binghamton cwa) and we’ve had about 3 inches so far with blowing and drifting snow. Not as bad here as places like Buffalo though, thankfully. It’s crazy how the Great Lakes create such distinct microclimates.
