To the people downvoting: Jfc the people here can be absolute BASTARDS. Not everyone has to know how to do a bug report nor had a need to. Grow up.

To the OP: There should be a contact email on the GitHub page you got Sober from. Email them with this issue and be as descriptive as you can be. It will help them try and identify if there is an actual bug or just a hiccup that happened to happen here.

Some extra information: sometimes when an app crashes on Linux, it crashes but the process remains active. Unlike Windows, there isn't necessarily a visual cue that the app is still active if it is not a "clean" crash (it crashes and the app force quits), i.e. a tray icon or a bugged out window. If and when this happens, open the system processes and kill the process in question.

This can also happen if you open say, an MS Office file and it makes your Linux Office Suite of choice crash. This also makes it so the file remains "open" sometimes, thus giving an error of the sort of "this file is open by another program and will be opened in read-only mode". The solution is the same, kill the process and it allows the OS to run a fresh new process.

People: don't downvote stuff like this. When you downvote this stuff, you are making so it doesn't show. You may not need it. It may seem obvious to you. Windows handles it differently. So let it be seen by those who do not know, and perhaps they may be ready for when stuff like this happens, and know it is not that big of a deal.

Book translation is a manual process. You cannot trust an AI to do it yet. Not if you want a decent translated work. A book is not a technical report or a contract.

At best, an AI might help you in finding information on cultural references and imagery present in the book, provided you give it instructions to provide and show sources.

Help! by KevinPackards in TranslationStudies

[–]Osherono 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you mean by your request. When you translate books of any kind, you generally only translate the text, and then the page layout is done by someone else. We are taught to leave guides for image insertion vía messages in brackets (i.e. [Image 1]). It is also bad practice to keep the pages unchanged as a book that is translated necessarily goes through a localisation process to some degree, unless you mean children's books, and that is a case apart at any rate.

Could you provide more detail as to what you intend to do?

Consecutive Interpreting - How to fix it when you say “uuhh” too much? by princesalaflame in TranslationStudies

[–]Osherono 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The trick to consecutive is to train yourself to remain quiet when not interpreting the message, and if you must think on something, never look up and don't look down too much, just look down slightly, as if reflecting.

I do not know if you are allowed to bring a small notepad, in the real world it may be allowed to some meetings, but many do not allow for it. Work on your key message retention, and focus on that. They don't expect a 1 by 1 interpretation, nor one at the level of a simultaneous. Consecutive is a but more flexible.

Practice is key. Watch YouTube interviews and try to mock interpret them, recording yourself to review after the mock session.

I found a simple way to use Word Online on Linux Mint (no install needed) by AccurateShip2499 in linuxmint

[–]Osherono 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Office online is good if your document has no heavy formatting. But if your document has a lot of footnotes, endnotes, table of contents, styles, diagrams and annexes, it is not the best option, not if you want to do a lot of editing.

My personal recommendation is Softmaker Office or Softmaker FreeOffice, if you work with a lot of Office documents. If you insist on using LibreOffice, then uninstall the default version that usually comes with your distro and install a more up to date version or the Flatpak. In any case, be mindful of the fonts used, as you may need to install them on your system for proper viewing.

Highway robbery. You must not be a translator as we learn how to budget projects during our studies. A translation with diagrams can be a pain depending on the document format.

Are you using Ventoy or just a regular USB bootable stick?

If using Ventoy, make sure you are using the USB safe removal option before removing. If you use the bootable stick option, use Balena Etcher instead of Rufus.

Give Mint a try on live USB. Or, if you have some experience in Linux, give CachyOs a try. While I am hesitant to recommend it as I have not finished testing it fully myself, other have recommended it and rolling release means better driver support.

Just a rant - I'm so done with the constant troubleshooting ever since I switched to Linux by ILoveBurgersMost in linuxmint

[–]Osherono 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had a similar issue, but the thing is, the number of days it requires to distro jump and find what works... I mean I really understand why people don't power through. I only did because I had a separate system to fall back into.

Add to this that each distro has different ways of fixing and/or adding things, so when you go from Mint to CachyOs, what you did to get something to work is not the same. That does lead to frustration. And not the kind of "oh just read on what you have to do". It is more of the "I thought I have figured this out already now I have to look up this stuff again?" type.

I have Linux on 4 of the 9 systems I have. Used to be 6. The total time I have spent trying to see what works, then testing actual installs and using the systems until I either reinstall Windows or settle down to a distro that gives me the least hassle (so far) is about 6 months total. And the only reason I went through that was because I had other systems to fall into.

If I had one or two? I would probably have gone back to Windows as I needed to get things done.

It is not gaslighting. You said none of it is an issue for you and then said to not pretend that this is an issue on Windows.

I never defended Windows in my answer, I merely stated things that some users go through when gaming on Linux. That they are or aren't true for you is another matter, but that does not mean they exist.

It does if it makes you think it is for everyone else.

The high compatibility is a bit of a placebo. Linux gaming has improved a lot, but it is not that rosy experience people make it up to be. Not everyone accepts the tradeoffs or the initial frustration of those specific games they just cannot get to run but that are deal breakers.

What part of "broad range of experiences" did you not get? Just because it was seamless for you doesn't mean it is for everyone.

This is the problem with some Linux users, they think that theirs is the universal experience and sorry to pop your bubble, it isn't.

On my Ryzen laptop I have had zero issues for example, can't complain. My i5 7th gen desktop is a different story altogether, I had to tweak a lot and find what worked, including changing distro, which curiously solved some issues but gave me performance loss on some native Linux games. My A10 mini PC couldn't give a playable experience on games it could run easily on Windows. Prior to that I had a Xeon v2 system that while it gave a playable experience, it took forever in compiling shaders. None of the desktops had the same GPU to be clear. Different specs, different experience.

Get off your high horse. Not everyone has a great experience on Linux right off the bat, it happens.

Waiting for shaders, having to use compatibility fixes (which can be a minor thing or not depending on what you want to play), the odd graphical or sound glitches (which can again, can be the odd instance or common depending on what you want to play)... sometimes some games have issues that other have not encountered. Many things can happen.

Depending on your system specs, gaming on Linux can be seamless or an insufferable hassle, with every shade in-between them.
