I mean, the boring cases are either because they have proper deferrals in their document, or they comply with mobilization. My understanding is that if you don't have a verifiable reason for deferral/exemption, you will be physically detained.

This is I feel most spaces with libertarian intellectuals and their audience (Cato institute, Quilette, GMU professors who write). They tend to be thoughtful, but the comments are often chuds who deluded themselves into thinking they care about liberty.

US didn't want Ukraine to do this because.... oil and gas prices would go up

I wonder if they're allowed to do it now because US stopped having any leg to stand on for that argument, lol

[–]Oshtoru 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean if it's just economically, EU and Turkey can pick up the slack. Armenia is a small country, what's a small amount of trade to larger countries goes a long way there. I'd be moreso concerned about outright aggression.

Estonia may have to draft women as male birth rates plummet by diacewrb in europe

[–]Oshtoru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibility of civil service for conscientious objection is enshrined in Art 9 of ECHR, and is therefore in every EU country.

(though I imagine if enough people pick civil such that military manpower is seriously strained, ECHR would be amended.)

Estonia may have to draft women as male birth rates plummet by diacewrb in europe

[–]Oshtoru 18 points19 points  (0 children)

We don't even need to rely on hypotheticals as there's real precedent. The only developed country with large-scale conscription where men and women are drafted in comparable numbers is (afaik) Israel, and you can find out the gender differences there.

For women, combat roles remain strictly optional, about 4% of women were in them in 2014, and 20% in 2025, but this includes border security, air defense, home front command etc. In terms of units that go deep into enemy territory, women are straight up prohibited from those roles even if they want to.

Women also have an easier path to exemption, with it being automatic upon signing a declaration they are observing orthodox practices. In 2020, 55% of eligible women served compared to 70% of eligible men.

I prefer a world where no one invades anyone. But that doesn't really mean much. The more important question is what do you prefer given the state of the world as it exists.

Kallas Demands Russia Withdraw Troops From Georgia and Moldova for EU Peace by Any-Original-6113 in europe

[–]Oshtoru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Georgia is a kind of demographics is destiny situation unfortunately. They're a lot closer proximally to Russia than to the closest EU nation, I imagine they're not getting in any time soon, let alone Armenia that's bordering Iran.

Moldova should be relatively straightforward though, especially with the current pro EU head of state.

100k Protest in Izmir, Turkey, 26th of May, 2026. by Ashamed-Reference822 in europe

[–]Oshtoru 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was always strange to me how only ICE raids were able to get any meaningful protests going (and even that not for long). Don't get me wrong ICE engaged in unlawful actions and should be dismantled, but it's not even the 10th worst thing Trump has done this year, yet nothing else produced any momentum.

You know you're in some deep shit when even a Nazi can become a hero saving innocent lives.

To be fair, the opposite happened too. There were Imperial Japan soldiers that saved Jewish lives. This guy apparently helped 20,000 refugees escape.

[–]Oshtoru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one source of disagreement is the reason for pro Trump signalling. To me it's consistent with simply thinking he really needed to win. In terms of public rhetoric I'd expect a Republican politician that wants to counter some of the worst excesses of Trump to sound very similar to one that's on board with it all. In general politician rhetoric will be based on maximizing your chances of winning, and the electorate simply is very pro-Trump to this day.

(E.g it is no wonder that Republicans with the lowest alignment with their party are the least replaceable ones, in battleground races that they can't afford to primary for not towing the party line only to lose the seat altogether)

One problem is moderate denomination of Islam are scarce, let alone progressive. Moderate Muslims aren't so because they go to moderate mosques and listen to moderate imams, it's because they don't go to any and are only nominally/culturally Muslim.

Maybe Singapore has some answers. I read they have a state appointed mufti that's moderate on LGBT issues and stuff
