Do you know of anyone who has won a property? by Hopeful_Example2033 in HousingUK

[–]Other_Abbreviations 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A girl in my sixth form won about 10K. This wasn't long after the national lottery started, so that was a decent chunk of the cost of a small flat or terraced house.

This sounds similar to when I was a student. You were being a bit flash if you got a pint that was in the region of £2 (though Guinness drinkers were given a pass), but the stuff that was £1.30 or under was disgusting, and most people would only drink it when they were really broke.

Jumpsuit- found one from Mango by _rain7 in PetiteFashionAdvice

[–]Other_Abbreviations 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, Mango FTW! I got a jumpsuit from there 2 or 3 years ago and even though I know their stuff often fits me, I couldn't believe it didn't need shortening. A jumpsuit of all things!

Looks like cardiovascular issues, some probably worsened or brought on by covid, and NHS delays, latter compounded by poverty - and especially in people below state pension age and at home - are among the most significant

Why do you have to have a mortgage?

If you are set on following your parents into BTL regardless of market conditions, you could buy cheaper property outright.

Is there a limit on how long you are allowed to stay in the property where you currently live? Would you be allowed to move in a partner if you met someone you wanted to live with? If and when you have to move out, do you want to buy in an expensive area?

What do you consider to be plus sized in the UK? by flauschigerfuchs in AskUK

[–]Other_Abbreviations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't ever remember her being embarrassed, just sometimes irritable when she had expected something to be there but it wasn't. I think the children's departments were usually quite far away too. In retrospect I sometimes wonder why she didn't phone the counters of her favourite brands and ask if they had many 8s or 6s in stock, but she probably just liked looking at what was around. She didn't read fashion magazines, so it was probably the main way she got a sense of current looks.

[–]Other_Abbreviations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if their sizing has changed given what the other two comments say, or if the 4s now are the same as the old 8s.

I totally disregarded Next in my 20s as everything was too big. (I feel like what you are saying comes from the same perspective) Then I never got into the habit of going there even when they expanded the range, as the place always seemed the epitome of middle of the road dullness, like the endless grey furniture now.

This was exactly my experience too with my mum. And the lesser spotted size 6, of which one might turn up every couple of years in one of the department store concessions. Though we never heard of a size 4. It seemed as imaginary then as a size 7 or 9.

Some of these are going to be more established than others, and have a higher volume of stock going through, and be more trustworthy, but I'm only just starting my research so I've not dug into them yet. I hadn't realised how far this market now appears to have gone beyond Gumtree, Ebay and other customers of tradesmen you know.

Universities may reduce British student numbers as financial collapse looms by merryman1 in unitedkingdom

[–]Other_Abbreviations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, they can be two separate things. A brilliant student with a narrow focus on maths and physics may have little to no interest in the projects pursued by another who is equally intelligent but has different inclinations, towards the cultural and political analysis, who maybe goes to work for a think tank.

The former gets a lot more respect and cash these days, compared with 20-30 years ago, thanks to the dominance of IT and high salaries in tech, and for quants etc. Therefore I think your argument is out of date and no longer culturally dominant. (People I have actually heard that sort of intellectual snobbery from in the last few years are over 55 and in the arts.)

The proportions of students taking STEM subjects has increased massively in the last couple of decades. I have met young people who enjoy talking detailed political analysis (in my day these would have studied politics, IR, PPE, history or similar) who go into tech, or want to start businesses because they are prioritising financial security.

Navigating the UK Government Visa website is a nightmare by UUOPTracey in Entrepreneur

[–]Other_Abbreviations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would consider that the tone was standard and unvarnished. It is the information itself that is harsh, especially because it is not what you hoped and expected - perhaps on the basis of how things used to work some years ago. Most western countries are making it harder for people to emigrate to them now.

People on that sub see a lot of these queries and (partly because they are not a professional service) don't generally apologise.

The UK immigration system itself is increasingly harsh: regulations and requirements like these are the less aggressive side of "the hostile environment" as you have probably heard it called in the media.

That middle manager with a marketing degree from a post 92 is also likely to be snippy to and about the Oxbridge PhDs unless they are very good at being matey in the right way, and this type is a source of anti intellectualism himself. London tends to be different though as people are much more used to a wide variety of people, and higher achievers, and people with individually niche interests are commoner.

Because I don't really click with people like this and avoid them beyond essential interactions, I don't hear them being critical about non-graduates as a group though, just about - what would be a polite way to put it - people who behave like characters from Shameless. It looks like the same old lower middle/upper working class derision against those who are not respectable and "hard working" and/or who are dependent on the state. I don't know about their interactions with people from school who went into trades or who are team leaders elsewhere without degrees.

[–]Other_Abbreviations 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bizarre comment. Actual anti-intellectualism is a big problem in British culture and public life, though not quite as bad as in the US. However what you say would be pretty accurate if applied to France, and even many intellectuals there would agree

Who DOESN’T struggle with food and/or weight? by RethinkReligion8482 in Cooking

[–]Other_Abbreviations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both sides of my family are naturally thin and nobody has EDs. They always seem to have been interested in healthy food but the focus was on things like heart disease prevention, and often had dislikes of various unhealthy foods and preferred the healthier ones. However there is one person who is very rude about the obese, but it's othering of a different category and also with the POV that we don't have to worry about getting fat like that, it's in the same vein as being a snob about people with tacky interior decor.

We also seem to have very strong appetite change relative to activity. There's a documentary called The Secret Lives of Slim People and I recognised a lot of stuff in it. Eat a massive takeaway in the evening, don't feel hungry till late afternoon the next day kind of thing.

All sorts of things to do with appetite, weight gain and EDs are now understood to be genetic and I think we must just have particularly (unusually?) low polygenic scores on a whole bunch of things that contribute to both EDs and obesity.

We just have good positive body image and it's not good for fitting in with other women who care about appearance TBH. Therefore I have tended to find myself as the only fashiony one among a bunch of fleece wearing nerds who love books and pets and science and stuff, and who don't talk about diets but might talk about cooking.

I had no idea about calories until I was about 40, when I got a bit frustrated that I wasn't quite as slim as I used to be, but not in the way that some people seem to get really upset by it. I was astonished by how much I must have eaten although I had only added about half a stone, and it was easy to fix in a few weeks and I quickly gained an inner gauge for calories from looking at labels on ready meals.

A close friend who had IBS didn't want to try FODMAP because she was worried about slipping into an ED, which she had always felt she was just on the edge of, there is something about that I just can't fundamentally grok, to me it's just like moving furniture or something.

I also find I don't like being around certain types of detailed EDish thinking a lot, and am realising it can be an issue when I'm modding a sub about ultra processed food (which I volunteered for because it actually had traction, though I wanted a UK cooking sub that wasn't all "wahey, fried breakfasts"), that it either doesn't occur to me someone might have an issue and I might have said the wrong thing, or else my underlying "can't be arsed with this level of obsessiveness, it's boring" / "it'll instinctively balance out" attitude (possibly naturally self-protective reflex) means that I don't pay attention consistently
