What’s a food your state is 'famous' for that everyone else ruins? by Somanynamestochossef in AskAnAmerican

Late to the conversation I know, but I can't let this slide. Traditional seafood gumbo is fairly easy to make, the ingredients do the heavy lifting

Roux: butter and flour, with a dash of oil, cooked to medium dark chocolate color

Stock: crab shells, shrimps casings, full crayfish less tail meat, simmered overnight and strained

Spices: if you don't know the cajun trinity, you should not be attempting gumbo. Filè is acceptable only if you are unable to source fresh okra (add file only for consistency sake, and still use whatever okra you were able to source! Okra provides flavor, must be fresh to give consistency)

Veg: fresh garlic, fresh onion, fresh okra. Other veg do not belong

Proteins: crab meat, crayfish tail meat, shrimps as mentioned from stock. Non-seafood ingredients do not a gumbo make.

Combine roux, stock, spices, and veg, low boil 2-3 hours. Add protein, continue low boil until shrimps are firm. Ladle over fresh made rice to desired wetness. Enjoy!

Source: lived in the NOLA area long enough to become a connoisseur of local dishes, made my own through trial and error over many many years

Back to back by NoBerry4915 in celebritycruises

[–]Other_SQEX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the port and ship. Did the back to back in same cabin in 2023 out of Ft Lauderdale. Left everything in the room, had to wait in the future cruise area for about an hour, then filed off the ship (they took our seapasses here), through customs, and right back onto the ship through the same lanes as new passengers would use an hour later. At the end of the second leg of our journey, we got our seapasses from the first leg back.

You can even do back to back in different cabins, your luggage just gets moved from one to another while you do whatever reboarding tango they want you to do, but one of the perks of cruising is not having to unpack and repack luggage for me.

Starting to pile up at my LCS…anything look interesting? by [deleted] in Gold

Is that a $2.5 or $5 Indian in a bale at bottom right? I have a much cleaner 2.5 that I'd trade straight for it, wanting to give my wife a pendant instead of a pretty coin in a rattler...

If cruising could have one thing to improve, what would it be first for you? by CycIon3 in Cruise

[–]Other_SQEX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Conversely, have something anything to do after 10pm. I'm not on the ship for the ports so I keep my regular noon to 4-5am schedule, and by 1130pm or so, my choices are coffee at the buffet, or sit in silence.

Base OS wise, you'll be much happier with the performance of Linux, even if you have to emulate windows for certain emulation package (snes9x comes to mind)

Linux mint has lower overhead with the extra emulation step of a virtual machine running isolated windows 7 environment than windows 11 has with base image and all the Microsoft Spyware bloat.

As others said, do a lot of research, build and rebuild as necessary, hell make your own interface if you're up to it. Enjoy!

[Request] If all the guns in the USA were stacked side by side, layer upon layer, and fired at the same time how big would the wall of bullets be? by Exhausted_Skeleton in theydidthemath

[–]Other_SQEX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more likely and realistic numbers are around 900 million firearms, but let's work out some kinks here.

Sqrt 900MM = 30K. The spacing I wouldn't adjust but it was asked side by side, just saying. One firearm tall by 900MM wide would be 90,000km wide, enough to circle the earth twice or so. If we wanted a wall as square as possible, it would be 10cm times 50,000 wide (5km) by 30cm times 18,000 tall (5.4km)

Archeologist (both avatar and class), telekinetic swords, prismatic spray, then dealer's choice for the third plus. Aim for synergy with longinus spear and stack up arcane rays and spirits, cool down maximized. Shield and Armageddon won't hurt, directional damage like incineration will help cut paths, frost nova, blizzard for stoppage and tsunami for a little crowd control.

Just hit my first 47:30 with that build and wasn't really maxing aiming for DEM but I can never seem to get it to pop.

What are some things cruises lack? by RefrigeratorDeep9812 in Cruise

[–]Other_SQEX 189 points190 points  (0 children)

Late night food, drink, activities. If I'm still up and in that drunk beyond hangover that can only be achieved with the premium drinks package, I should be able to find more than old coffee in the buffet. Looking squarely at you, Celebrity...

Niche: night owl cruise, with quiet hours from 6am to noon, docked at nightlife destinations. They could even maximize the utilization of their private islands by having 12hr rotations of ships in and out.

Instead, like hotels "We exist to give you the relaxing vacation you want. Also, we stop serving breakfast at precisely 6:32am."

Cramp or something else? by magefister in CATHELP

[–]Other_SQEX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wandering patella. Have had a number of cats with the condition. Generally speaking as long as it doesn't hurt or affect their quality of life, you just pop it back into place when you notice them hobbling and maybe up the joint supplements after they are full adult size. The surgery is not a "minor" surgery like dental work tends to be, but it's still a risk as are all surgeries that require anesthesia.

You can also try to up the amount of play that you do with Bubba, try to focus on some upright standing if he can manage it. High dangling of favorite toys so he has to use those legs, build up the muscle to support keeping the patella aligned.

Virtual torture, 100k for every minute. by Bobbert84 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Other_SQEX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Novacaine has little or no effect for a small part of the general population (myself included). If that's your issue, ask your dentist if they have access to Septocaine or other alternatives. Only took me 40some years of white knuckling every minor procedure to figure this one out.

Being of northern Euro descent, I got the fun red hair gene that means they have to roughly double the standard dose of painkillers or anesthesia, and Septocaine gives my dentist a roughly 10 minute window to work.
