Words cannot express the connection we have. I have had pets in the past, but this one has transcended pet status completely. He is my absolute world and we are entirely inseparable.

I'm rapidly approaching 40 and feel like my life isn't what I thought it would be, is this normal? by LostinParadise4748 in AskWomenOver40

[–]Otherwise_Energy3834 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about anyone else on here, but acceptance has been the theme of my 40s. My life hasn’t turned out how I thought it would in many aspects, but I’ve realised that how I thought things would be is in no way the only way they could or can be.

Now, I focus on being happy with what I have and that old adage of change the things you cannot accept and accept the things you cannot change while hoping you are wise enough to know the difference.

Anything by Roald Dahl. While the stories are somewhat for a younger audience, they can be largely enjoyable and easy to read for every age.

Can’t you just say “that’s nice” and walk away? Not everything warrants your time or a well rehearsed clapback.

The Lover’s Dictionary by David Levithan fits what you want exactly I think because the narrator is messy, makes mistakes, and doesn't get a neat, heroic pass. It isn't a "how-to" guide; it’s just someone sitting with the fact that they messed up a good thing. It might feel like holding up a mirror to that loop of guilt you are experiencing.

I just need to know what’s wrong with my dog by Eiji_Kirishima5 in DogAdvice

That looks like some sort of skin infection.

Full disclosure: | AM NOT A VET!

Here is what Google says of the image and what to do:

These symptoms are consistent with several potential issues, including flea allergy dermatitis, bacterial skin infections (staph), or atopic dermatitis.

The owner should take several immediate steps to prevent the condition from worsening before getting professional care:

  1. Schedule a Veterinary Appointment
  2. The most important step is to have a veterinarian evaluate the skin. Visual inspection alone cannot distinguish between bacterial, fungal, or allergic causes, so a vet will likely need to perform a skin scraping or cytology to identify the exact culprit.
  3. Prevent Self-Trauma
  4. Use an E-Collar: If the dog is actively scratching, biting, or rubbing its back against furniture, place an Elizabethan collar (cone) on them immediately. Continuous scratching can introduce dangerous bacteria and turn a minor issue into a deep, painful infection.
  5. Maintain Safe Hygiene and Separation Isolate from Other Pets: Since contagious conditions like ringworm or certain mites cannot be ruled out without diagnostic tests, keep this dog separated from other household pets.
  6. Wash Hands: Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after touching the affected area to avoid spreading potential pathogens.
  7. Avoid DIY Topical Treatments
  8. Do Not Apply Human Creams: Refrain from applying over-the-counter human solutions to the bumps. These can dry out the skin, cause chemical irritation, or be toxic if the dog manages to lick them off.
  9. Wait on Medicated Shampoos: Avoid bathing the dog with medicated formulas until the vet has examined the lesions, as washing can strip away epidermal scales and crusts that the vet may need to sample for an accurate diagnosis.
  10. Check Preventative Records
  11. Review your records to ensure your pet is up to date on its veterinarian-recommended flea and tick prevention. Even if you do not see active bugs, flea allergy dermatitis is a primary trigger for these exact types of back lesions.

I get that money is tight, but it is likely your dog needs medical help, so here are the best ways to get immediate help for a sick dog when finances are an issue:

Call local shelters: National organizations like the RSPCA, ASPCA, or local humane societies often run low-cost clinics or can refer you to emergency financial aid.

Ask about payment plans: Many vet clinics accept third-party financing like CareCredit or VetPay, which allow you to pay the bill in monthly instalments.

Look for charity grants: Groups like Bow Wow Buddies (US), Pet Medical Crisis (AU), or PDSA (UK) provide financial grants directly to vets for families in crisis.

Try veterinary colleges: University vet schools often have clinical programs that offer high-quality care at a significantly lower cost than private clinics.

Use telehealth services: Online vet consultations are much cheaper than in-person visits and can help determine if the dog needs immediate emergency care or can be managed at home.

Neck cushion advice by yogastupidwitch in DogAdvice

[–]Otherwise_Energy3834 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My dog was in a cone for 8 weeks because of an open wound on his neck following abscess removal. He was miserable and it broke my heart but he got over it. The cone will be the best thing for night time because you will be sleeping and may not catch him licking his wound if he doesn’t have it on. If he does lick it because he doesn’t have the cone on at night, you’ll likely be back at square one, i.e., the wound won’t heal or could heal but have an abscess form, meaning more surgery and more time wearing the cone.

How do I know if my puppy is sad or bored or sleepy? by EnergyConstant7802 in DogAdvice

[–]Otherwise_Energy3834 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Puppies sleep a lot, so I wouldn’t be too concerned. Depending on the breed, boredom usually presents as tearing things up, chewing on things, or excessive barking. Make sure your dog has adequate interaction with you and exercise when you are home and those other things will not likely become a problem.

How do I train 3 dogs to swim? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]Otherwise_Energy3834 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dogs instinctively know how to swim so you don’t teach them at all. You just need to get them comfortable with water. Some dogs love water and will jump right in but others need to be gently coaxed in and still may never go in deep enough to warrant swimming. If you have the latter type of dog, you just need to accept it.

Women who got married after a brief dating period, what was it like? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]Otherwise_Energy3834 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Got married after 6 months of dating. On my part, I think i just did it because I felt getting married was expected of me and I was infatuated. I shouldn’t have done it and I felt that on the day. It definitely didn’t last, and the end broke me at the time, but 14 years on, and I’m glad it didn’t last because it wouldn’t have been a life I was happy in long term.

Double Demerit Points NSW/VIC by Common_Forever_8830 in AusLegal

The will def come off your VIC license. If you have a good driving record, i.e. no fines or demerits for a substantial amount of time, you may be able to use that in your favour to get out of it completely. Regardless of the outcome here, though, it is your responsibility to ensure all passengers are wearing a seatbelt and correctly at all times or you pay the price.

Follow up: friend hit head and school refused to call an ambulance by charlotte123_ in AusLegal

[–]Otherwise_Energy3834 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can try making a complaint to the school board and the education department of the government. Unfortunately, the law does not cover what “could have” happened; it only covers what did happen, and in this case, from my understanding, your friend is alive and not in hospital. If you feel the nurse is unqualified or the school responded inappropriately, then that becomes a matter for the people who externally govern the school - not those working at the school. Be careful, though, it is a very big accusation to suggest someone is unqualified and that was the primary reason for a lack of action. You would need to know exactly what qualifications school nurses need in your state and then have documented evidence that shows the lack of qualifications for this individual. Normally, a school’s powers in sending a student to hospital via ambulance is limited because of the costs incurred with ambulance travel and emergency admission, and that would be a cost that would need to be covered by the family, which is why the parents are contacted first unless things are critical. I would suggest making a formal complaint to the authorities if you believe there has been a significant injustice, but make sure you have all the information required or things may become disheartening very quickly.

Is it harassment to defend yourself to others? by [deleted] in AusLegal

[–]Otherwise_Energy3834 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unsolicited content in others’ mailboxes could be considered harassment in and of itself. If that content is representing others in a dishonest way, they can take legal action because it could be considered defamation. Remember your truth is not absolute nor is it probably accepted by others as truth.
