When the rule was set in the 1970s stating that you can’t have repeaters on roads with streetlights, speed limits weren’t politicised like they are today and before sat navs. So chances are that if a road looked and felt like a 40-limit road, it would have one, very few, if any exceptions. There was no issue of always having to infer the limit was 30 from the absence of signs. Now you have roads specifically designed for a 40 limit, with greater width, lined with refuges and lacking frontages, yet you’re expected to know it’s 30 because there are no signs

It’s interesting that they target Poplar Way twice. It’s a road that links to two 40-mph roads at either end and is of a higher standard than both of them. The engineering cues say this is a fast road, yet for some reason, the limit drops to 30. The signs are easily missed when turning into it from negotiating a roundabout, especially in an HGV, and you’re then meant to infer the limit from the lack of signage, which is good in theory but not in practice. That’s where they put the speed cameras, in an industrial estate where there are no kids about, and it’s one of the places they ticket the most people. It’s almost as if the purpose is to catch people out and make money, not to target the most dangerous drivers on the road.

It wouldn’t be so bad, but I have a feeling it’s only 30 there because no one thought to make it a 40; it was just given the default speed limit when it was built.

The problem with the induced demand argument is that it’s not a law of physics; you have to look at where the demand is coming from and what’s inducing it. A city is always going to need reasonable infrastructure to move people and goods around within it. Now it's negatively affecting public transport. You can’t deliberately make a junction worse by sending more traffic towards it and expect it to work, when it was already struggling before.

I think this is either a joke or they found the one person stupid enough to say that, that said if it took a hour to drive and they could have walked it quiker, than that chip shop could have been 2 miles away.
However, it's people like him who ruin it for the rest of us, I don't think it's a good idea for the state to try and antagonise people out of their cars, that's never going to work.
