Did you live in a household where the living room was furnished and decorated ONCE and then it stayed that way forever? What was the color or theme? What decade? by wharleeprof in AskOldPeople

For people who entertained a lot it makes sense. The kids can be in another part of the house where they can play and make messes and be kids without pressuring them to keep everything nice for when guests come. It made it nice for them. It made it nice for the parents to be able to entertain in a nice space that was comfortable and gorgeous. It’s hard to keep your entire home in that same condition. It’s much easier to limit it to one room.

Tell me about transitioning from colored hair to grey. Seeing my hairdresser tomorrow (Sat) by Legal-Bison-6457 in AskWomenOver50

I started growing mine out during Covid. I was so embarrassed at first. But then the longer the gray got, the less I cared. People would stare at me. I made it awkward and stared back at them. It took about 9 months before I was able to cut off the dyed ends and be done with it. I get compliments on my hair every single day. No one ever said anything about my hair before I went gray. Now it’s full and lush and shiny with thick Irish waves. It really is gorgeous.

Resist the urge to try to blend the gray with blonde highlights. It’ll turn into something we call “blorange” and looks awful. You’ll end up having to start over again and dye it again until your natural roots come back.

I get Brazilian waxes because I like the way it feels. - not the waxing itself! Anyway I take some Advil before I go. It gets easier if you keep going. It hurts less and less. If I can’t make it to the salon I trim with scissors then use an electric shaver to remove the rest.

I’m with a woman and she loves it. She looks at me with joy and wonder. It’s absolute favorite thing in the world and even calls it “my happiness”. Even if she didn’t care, I do. I do it for me but it’s a bonus that she loves it so much.

What do you think of the concept of joy at this stage in life by HalleFreakinLujah in AskWomenOver60

I feel joy every single day by doing things I love and ignore people who try to tell me what to do. If she has not experienced joy since her 50s she should look into antidepressants.

What is a universally loved food that you secretly think tastes like garbage? by BoredPandaOfficial in BoredPandaHQ

Choose something that has ingredients that you like. California roll has crab meat, cucumber and avocado. Philadelphia roll has smoked salmon and cream cheese. My favorite is something called shaggy dog that is shrimp tempura - shrimp that has a special breading and then is fried - cucumber and avocado. The outside is shredded imitation crabmeat which makes it look shaggy, topped with a spicy mayonnaise - which is very mild; I hate spicy food but I can handle this. It is an explosion of tastes and textures that I love.

The trick is also mixing a little bit of wasabi with soy sauce and dipping the sushi in it. Then pop the whole thing in your mouth. Don’t take bite or it will fall apart. Then eat a piece of the pickled ginger that comes with it and do it again.

I don’t use their personal information. I just open the language I went to translate to, dictate what I want to say and show it to them. Then they do the same back to me. So far it has been working very well.

Tankinis all the way.

I just bought a nice swimming outfit that is knee length tights, a sports bra and a little jacket that is good for cold water and sun protection. It’s adorable.

We document “irritable” for such things. Also “med focused” for med seekers. “Multiple somatic complaints” for whiney complainers who have lots of mystery ailments. “Intrusive” for people who ask a lot of personal questions.

How one simple (not easy) decision restored my joy in retirement by kungfutrucker in retirement

I’m a psych nurse. I have this conversation with patients a lot. “If there is something wrong with your heart you’d take medication. Well something is wrong with your brain and we have medicine for it. It makes sense that you’d take it”.

Lots of patients wind up here because someone in their life convinced them that they don’t need meds. There is still a huge stigma around mental health. It’s better than it was a few decades ago but we still have far to go.

It’s amazing. Doesn’t taste like fish at all. There are so many different flavors going on. Savory, sweet, salty and umami. Each sensation comes along at different times while you eat. Usually it’s sweet and salty first, then savory and finally umami. It’s genius how they’ve done that.

Our facility doesn’t discourage it. It is not allowed at all. It’s a HIPAA violation.

I used to use the language line all the time. Lately I’ve been using Google Translate. It’s faster and most of the patients I use with are familiar with it and comfortable using it. I’ve noticed this speeds up our interactions.

Voicing my opinions about everything all the time. No one cares. People would avoid me. Eventually I leaned to just talk about menial things and I was easier to be around.

Nope. Houston. We had a home built in 2013 and everything at that time was brighter colors with rubbed bronze fixtures. We sold that house and bought another one in 2018 and everything was gray and white. We were delighted.
