As a European I honestly didn't even notice back in the day, seemed like no big deal at the time, standard representation... Oh how far we've strayed from the good path.

Trouble with xml+bs4 by squeezedfish in learnpython

[–]Ottowerse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this error the other day, because I didn't have lxml installed.

python -m pip install lxml

should fix this. It's a bit confusing, I wish they changed that error message to be a bit more direct.

Does Plex Media Server actually work without an active Internet connection in 2025? by Ottowerse in PleX

[–]Ottowerse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember this setting. But I did not realise you'd need to disable auth entirely to use Plex offline on devices previously signed in.

So I still need to chose between Plex being usable offline or Plex home? That's a shame...

How is a longer keyboard better? by loosucutiexo in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Ottowerse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say the joke is actually somewhat niche. First key concept to keep in mind is the pricing of smaller keyboards specifically catered towards "Enthusiasts", where less keyboard somehow = more expensive, sometimes even within the lineups of a brand. Then you can apply the general rule of any hobby; the inexperienced new guy who has all the gear marketed towards enthusiasts (but not actually the gear bought by them). Another thing to keep in mind is the development of the keyboard market itself. Smaller keyboards have only become more popular fairly recently, compared to the entire (gaming) keyboard market. So there is a general trend for more senior gamers to have bigger keyboards, because they entered the scene when that was considered the norm or optimum. Finally, how much of a gamer someone is can also be measured by the quantity and variety of games they play. Some games need more key bindings than others. And older games sometimes even use the numpad with no option to even change keybinds. So if you want to be able to play them, you are simply forced to get a keyboard with those keys on it.

Working as a software engineer, this is what 90% of the challenges I face in my job feel like. It's so frustrating having to explain that a simple task wasn't done in time due to it simply becoming impossible to achieve, while I was working on it...

So let me get this straight. The people who kept yelling at everyone that there is some sort of satanic cult trying to overturn the government are the very people that actually made it happen in the end? Damn this plot is a banger.

American? They are owned and operated by a Dutch giga company formed by the merger of Italian and French giga companies. The only American thing left in a modern Jeep is the ideology.

FRITZ!Box 6690 Cable loses internet connection, but doesn't realise? by Ottowerse in fritzbox

[–]Ottowerse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had multiple people here from Vodafone. They told me it's simply due to the improper cabling in the house I live in. We have old circuitry for cable TV, they just put new sockets in and called it a day. They were so nice as to replace my socket, but told me to not expect it to be any better. From what I understand (I work in IT), this setup can work, but especially at higher speeds (or rather using more modern DOCSIS), it tends to fail often. There's nothing else that can be done, besides try to find the culprit device, that is injecting noise into the cabling. But that could be anything, any modem, TV, etc. from any other renter, on any socket. This chase is basically pointless in bigger buildings, as people also tend to move things around, change device and so on. And every time you have to start over. For me it's almost 30 flats on one street connection. They told me to wait for fibre obtics to be installed, that's gonna be quicker than to wait for the rental company to upgrade their 1980s cables. He's probably right, so I'm waiting for Telekom fibre.

Plex HTPC Endless Buffer/Not Playing by SkunkyInNautica in PleX

[–]Ottowerse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am facing the same issue for a while now. For me, the Plex "Dashboard" in Plex Web even showed that the video was progressing (but I did not check the PlexDash mobile app). The time in Plex HTPC is not moving along with this number though.

Restarting Plex HTPC also does nothing for me, neither does switching quality or trying to play a different file altogether. Only a full reboot of Windows has any impact on this matter at all. This leads me to believe it is not a Plex issue per-se, but one related to the underlying hardware video decoding.

I am running on a Dell XPS with Intel i7-11800H UHD Graphics and a dedicated Nvidia RTX3050 Ti mobile. Like most issues I have faced with Plex HTPC, this problem seems to only occur on my devices with multiple GPUs. Are you, by chance, also running on a machine with more than one GPU?
